Sounds to me like churches have negative secondary impacts on neighborhoods. We should slap a sin tax on them, like the Illinois strip club tax. The church tax could be used to help underfunded groups that help victims of religious violence and abuse.

Attention Christians!

Jesus would have invited them in, fed them, and ministered to them.

Just sayin'

BronyMedic: CasperImproved: If both parties are aware and make money from it, where is the harm? Selling copies in that instance should not be an issue.

Except you don't run the risk of contracting HIV or Syphilis when you make a copy of a page in a book. There are legitimate public health concerns in the United States regarding prostitution. Even in states and in nations where it's legal it's highly regulated, and if you're on the black list for having an STD, it's still a crime.

There are also issues with the fact that many of the prostitution rings in the United States are not run with willing employees. They use some form of debt slavery, human trafficing, or they use underaged women.

It's the illegality of prostitution that feeds that, not the other way around. In other words, it's BECAUSE it's illegal that it attracts white slavers, underage women and related criminality. Because the women involved cannot rely on local authorities for help, and because they are involved in an illegal occupation, they have no choice but to accept what's dealt to them. If, for instance, firefighting was illegal, and firemen were considered criminals merely because of their profession, you'd see crime bosses taking over the firefighting trade--equipment would be sold on the black market, firemen would have to hide in the shadows and if they were hurt or exploited they'd have nobody to turn to.

Look at the comparison to moonshining and liquor smuggling during Prohibition. Once booze was made legal again, although some illegal booze still is sold, distillers and brewers and their employees have protection under the law, and no need to sneak under the radar and get supplies and justice from the Mob.

Your concerns about the health of working girls is valid, but again, it's BECAUSE the job is illegal, not a result. Because girls have no legal recourse--they can't get health insurance, they can't require their customers to obey hygiene regulations (and vice versa), they can't afford to take time off work if they do get sick--they have no alternative but to accept hazardous conditions. Now, if prostitution was a legal job, it could be regulated to some degree, girls could negotiate for sick time or whatever and the health of the profession would improve. Brothels and escort services have better health conditions because it's in their best interest for the girls to be healthy and because they are both able to pay for doctor visits AND enforce them, something street girls don't have.

If Madams could operate legally in all states, more girls would work for them, and more of them could require their clients to use condoms, could make their girls get STD tests, etc. Now there'd always be some street whores--like there is still moonshine--but it wouldn't be the overwhelming mess it is today.

I'm going to guess he wears polos and blue jeans, is at least competent with an acoustic guitar and has been heard to say, "right on", with some frequency.

The church I attend is called Lakepointe church.

What kind of place are they?

Let me put it this way: If a women walked into the church auditorium during a service, and she was known by many in the church to be a prostitute, not one affiliated person would say anything defamatory to her. She would be welcomed with the same friendliness everyone else receives. She, with the rest of the congregation, would be informed during the announcements that the Bibles in the seatback pockets are free for the taking, and that programs occur after the service which explore Christian beliefs.

/They play rock music and have awesome laser lights and fog effects. Pastor Greg always puts out a neat sermon, too, using visual aids but also delving into theology. A lot of older Christians hate the church because of their amiability with anyone and everyone, and the music that they play. That, of course, makes it a place to find a Farker.

//I won't say anything for other churches. I just do what Jesus did.

///Disclaimer: The above comment may, at a future date, become invalid in the event that Lakepointe church fails to be an organization. Check Google.

The distance from the church actually matters in the law. Its like selling heroin 200 feet from a school; you would prepare for a big dick to go up your ass

Where's the 5th name?

CasperImproved: did you not notice I said regulate for health elsewhere?

Actually, no I didn't.

CasperImproved: You Sir have lost my respect... want to try again?

For what? Pointing out the fact that libertarian-ism towards Prostitution ignores the real issues with the majority of the Prostitutes, Pimps, and Johns in the United States? Unless we're talking high class, 1,000 dollar an hour houses of Escorts or Nevada Cathouses, the majority of the prostitution in the United States is done at the victimization of the women involved. Violence and abuse are used to keep the girls in line. Many are victims of human trafficing, or working to pay off a "debt" owed to organized crime groups.

Hell. They just busted one such ring in Memphis that was bringing in 14 year old girls from Chicago to pimp out.

Everybody who's read the bible knows that Jesus hung out with prostitutes. The cops are just going for the low hanging fruit.

I can understand selling drugs near a school being bad and giving you a harsher sentence, but selling your yourself near a church gives you a harsher sentence? That's just bible belt tardery if you ask me.

In unrelated news, in heavy meth neighborhoods, police cars double as churches. They get 37% more confessionals that way.

I've never had interest in spending money for something I could earn by virtue (could be considered a joke), but I have never thought bad things about people making money as long as they did not hurt others (except for thieves).

If prostitution and Maryjane were legal and properly monitored for health and quality reasons, think about how much money the government would earn and save, and in addition ensure the health of the public?

ok - if yer gonna quote TN Code, quote it correctly - Prostitution is a Class B misdemeanor. Prostitution committed within 100 feet of a church or within 1½ miles of a school is a Class A misdemeanor

Within 1½ miles of the school, you're subject to heavier fines and jail time. Standard Class A misdemeanor fines apply to 100 feet of a church.

It's Knoxville. Do you expect anything different?

Also, Tenn. Code Ann. § 39-13-513 states that if that Church had a school program, and they were within a mile and a half of it, there is a sentencing enhancement for using their services.
