What.

I'm one of the most Atheist Atheists that Fark ever Athiest'ed.

CasperImproved: did you not notice I said regulate for health elsewhere?

Actually, no I didn't.

CasperImproved: You Sir have lost my respect... want to try again?

For what? Pointing out the fact that libertarian-ism towards Prostitution ignores the real issues with the majority of the Prostitutes, Pimps, and Johns in the United States? Unless we're talking high class, 1,000 dollar an hour houses of Escorts or Nevada Cathouses, the majority of the prostitution in the United States is done at the victimization of the women involved. Violence and abuse are used to keep the girls in line. Many are victims of human trafficing, or working to pay off a "debt" owed to organized crime groups.

Hell. They just busted one such ring in Memphis that was bringing in 14 year old girls from Chicago to pimp out.

Avery614: Most of these problems will start to go away with regulation.

Some of them will go away with regulation. Most of them won't. And that's fine. I have no issue with highly regulated, legal prostitution, like they have in Nevada's Cathouses.

Avery614: If porn can exist, be taxed, and not cause widespread STD problems then neither will legalized, regulated prostitution.

Professional Porn causes MAJOR public health issues. There was a huge scandal in the 80s and 90s where people who were KNOWN to be infected with Hepatitis B and HIV were still barebacking with uninfected individuals to make porn movies, and infecting countless other people. It's still going on today. The smaller studios and internet sites which exist are known to hire those who are on the HIV Blacklists. Many of them now exist in places other than LA because LA's Department of Health pushes condom use on ALL professional pornography sets.

CasperImproved: Apparently you've never been top Europe here it is in places regulated and legal... You know, where there isn't an AIDs issue, or where STDs are low?

Apparently you didn't read my post either. If you want an example of how the US does it right, look at Nevada. There's a state black list for those infected by HIV or Hepatits/Herpes, mandated weekly STD testing for employees, they must use condoms, and the Brothel has to be licensed and regularly inspected by the state of Nevada.

They also have to maintain strict records on their employees - including Medical records - report ANY incidents, and make the mandatory age requirements.

If the entire United States is willing to do that, I'm ok with legalized prostitution.

Have you checked out Europe? It is legal there in some places, regulated and licensed. And not only are the girls clean, they are actually nice. I know. I went there with buddies... I did not partake, but I did approve.

2012-06-03 10:07:50 PM

BronyMedic: CasperImproved: If both parties are aware and make money from it, where is the harm? Selling copies in that instance should not be an issue.

Except you don't run the risk of contracting HIV or Syphilis when you make a copy of a page in a book. There are legitimate public health concerns in the United States regarding prostitution. Even in states and in nations where it's legal it's highly regulated, and if you're on the black list for having an STD, it's still a crime.

There are also issues with the fact that many of the prostitution rings in the United States are not run with willing employees. They use some form of debt slavery, human trafficing, or they use underaged women.

It's the illegality of prostitution that feeds that, not the other way around. In other words, it's BECAUSE it's illegal that it attracts white slavers, underage women and related criminality. Because the women involved cannot rely on local authorities for help, and because they are involved in an illegal occupation, they have no choice but to accept what's dealt to them. If, for instance, firefighting was illegal, and firemen were considered criminals merely because of their profession, you'd see crime bosses taking over the firefighting trade--equipment would be sold on the black market, firemen would have to hide in the shadows and if they were hurt or exploited they'd have nobody to turn to.

Look at the comparison to moonshining and liquor smuggling during Prohibition. Once booze was made legal again, although some illegal booze still is sold, distillers and brewers and their employees have protection under the law, and no need to sneak under the radar and get supplies and justice from the Mob.

Your concerns about the health of working girls is valid, but again, it's BECAUSE the job is illegal, not a result. Because girls have no legal recourse--they can't get health insurance, they can't require their customers to obey hygiene regulations (and vice versa), they can't afford to take time off work if they do get sick--they have no alternative but to accept hazardous conditions. Now, if prostitution was a legal job, it could be regulated to some degree, girls could negotiate for sick time or whatever and the health of the profession would improve. Brothels and escort services have better health conditions because it's in their best interest for the girls to be healthy and because they are both able to pay for doctor visits AND enforce them, something street girls don't have.

If Madams could operate legally in all states, more girls would work for them, and more of them could require their clients to use condoms, could make their girls get STD tests, etc. Now there'd always be some street whores--like there is still moonshine--but it wouldn't be the overwhelming mess it is today.

A bored housewife asked her husband if she could be a weekend prostitute, just for fun and to bring in some cash. He said, "Sure, why not." So she went out street-walking on Friday night.

She came home Sunday morning, looking hard-used but very excited.

"Look, honey! I made a hundred-and-twenty dollars and ten cents! Isn't that great?"

"Who in Hell gave you ten cents," asked hubby, incredulous.

"Why, everybody!" she replied.

If I was being too subtle for you, you've got a real problem. It makes absolutely no material difference where the crime takes place, but since higher fines are imposed for crimes taking place within X feet of X type of building, and since the true purpose for the laws is revenue generation rather than crime deterrence, entrapment operations are set up in places where the fines will be higher, even though, as previously stated, it makes no material difference where the crime takes place. Did you get it this time?

No... I just thought you were stupid. But since you raise the point that it is all a "conspiracy" to make money from, let me ask you... what separates the dumb asses from their money? The idiots that need to pay for sex, or the idiots that don't regulate it and legally make money from it in a healthy way? Or the really stupid citizens that will pay to make it all stop? There is another category.... those too stupid to know the difference. Which category do you place yourself closest to?
