Guess I date myself when I say that I'll always remember him best from Hogan's Heroes.

I literally ran into Richard Dawson on the studio lot where he was shooting The Running Man. I was rounding the corner of the sound stage on my way to the copy center and came upon Dawson and a young fan posing for a picture. To my surprise (I had never met him before), Dawson gently reached out and put his arm around me and pulled me into the picture. He kissed my cheek as the kid's mom snapped the shutter. Dawson then turned to the boy--who was grinning--and said "I just thought I'd add some nice scenery to the picture." I was so stunned! Dawson released me and said "Thank you, love! Very nice of you." I only just laughed and continued on my way.

To this day I have wondered at my presence in some stranger's photo album. I can just see the kid, now grown, sitting with the book on his lap showing his kids: "...and here's me and Richard Dawson kissing some blonde who accidentally walked into the shot..."

tenpoundsofcheese: What was clever about him is that even though he was encouraging families to feud in order to win money, he did it in a way that was enjoyable.

He really was the father of reality TV and shows like Survivor and The Apprentice.

Please don't insult him like that. Dawson's shows were about sportsmanship and comedy. The Apprentice is about personal attacks and some billionaire's ego.

He was one of the best things about The Running Man. Instead of just getting an actor to portray an over the top game show host, they managed to get THE game show host and got an amazing performance out of him.

First Ms. Joosten, now Mr. Dawson. Looks like I picked the wrong week to fondly remember B-list celebrities.

He was a hoot on Match Game. Of course, Match Game itself was matchless.

Here's the best eulogy I have read for Dawson

From CM Punk's Twitter feed...

"Richard Dawson. A real man. Would kiss your wife while looking YOU in the eye. And you'd do NOTHING. Because he is Richard Dawson."

There's some irony that the sole remaining survivor of the ENTIRE "Hogan's Heroes" cast is Robert "LeBeau" Clary, who was THIS close to being exterminated in the Holocaust (he still has his inmate identification number tattooed on his arm, which was why he was always filmed wearing a long-sleeves on the show, regardless of the weather).

Huggermugger: Known as "Dickie Dawson" in the UK 1950s. Married to the voluptuous Diana Dors, the Marilyn Monroe/Divine of her era. They thew swinging singles parties in their flat, and later Dawson was participating in orgies with the ultra-sleazy Bob Crane.

By all accounts, Richard Dawson and Bob Crane did not get along and didn't socialize outside of the show. Indeed, outside of working Dawson spent much of his time at home during the late 1960s raising his two sons (he got sole custody of them after he and Dors were divorced). John Carpenter was the one who went orgy-hopping with Crane.

Complicit: I thought he died shortly after The Running Man was made.

This. (Sees what you did there)

Soundman: He'll be back. But only in a rerun.

That.

But seriously, I thought he had died years ago.

Many a weeknight in my childhood was weaned on watching him on the syndicated FF. RIP good sir.
