Coco LaFemme: I was a teenage girl once. 12 years ago. On my walls, I had a map of New York City, a poster of the Brooklyn Bridge, a corkboard with pictures of my friends/family/ticketstubs and the like, and that was it. On my ceiling I had those little glow in the dark stars arranged to look like they were exploding out of one corner all over the rest of the ceiling. Very cool. At least I thought it was, anyway.

You sound way too balanced and normal for Fark.

jmr61: Somacandra: I'm willing to bet 99% of this thread's readers have never even thought about young girls trying to make their way towards their own identity while growing up in successive generations of Palestinian refugee camps, much less actually seen a young person's bedroom in such a place. For that reason alone this thread will be a good thing.

[i.imgur.com image 250x387]

Essential "fiction" reading for anyone wanting to understand the dilemma of a young person in a Palestinian camp.

No one in the US cares about anything in the Middle East except Jews.

Yeah, not like events there effect gas prices or anything.

imprimere: That's nothin'. I had to go to work at age 14 (McDonald's) and give my check to "help the family". I rarely got to keep more than a 10 spot.

Ditto. I once hid my check because I foolishly thought what I earned was mine. My step dad quickly corrected that misconception with this fists. He's dead and I divorced my mother 20 years ago. She doesn't know she has a grandson, never will.

The book is not as awesome as this blog about 20-something women's bedrooms.

The random political antics of the Middle East are a drop in a barrel compared to Chinese demand. Economics trumps politics almost every time.

I don't know the rest of your story, but I have a good relationship with my parents. I don't agree with the way the did everything, but they were doing the best they could.

The horror of teenage girls knowing about sex and making jokes about it.

Truth be told, both the kids are morning people, and I genuinely love them so I cherish the morning hours with them. Morning is daddy time. I actually like being up when they wake. There's something magical about it.

it's a freakin wall--get over it. my kids did put stuff on the wall--hell, one of them painted half the walls black the others white. big deal. they did it in their own room. when it came time to move out, they had to put it back to "normal"

one of the kids had her bedroom door plastered with all sorts of stuff--i felt guilty when we were moving because she had to take it all off. and it looked real cool.

geez, come on--there's a whole lot worse than what some kids do to get worried about a paint job on a wall.

I bought my house from my sister, and my bedroom was her daughter's when her daughter was a young teen. She arranged her stars into constellations: Draco and Cassiopeia are the only ones still recognizable.

The only thing we kept was those stars. Now that we have small children, they love our room because of those stars.

I was twelve and put those same stars all over my room. I was a child of the space program. Now, thirty years later, my little sister, nieces, and nephews ALL loved those things! Good stuff.

I was like that. Then I saw a late night show that was advertising the DVD set Folding: Those That Know To How Do It. Purely instructional.

I ordered the set and watched it with interest.

I realized how much work it actually was.

Then I went back to the dryer method. Turn it on, take a shower and you have clothes already ironed.

Uh, I beg to differ. Both of my daughters went to public schools and they are both successful. One has a free ride on a Ph.D program.

It is not the schools.

Think about that.

A free ride on a liberal studies program isn't worth the money it costs.

Oh, I think it will work out for her. A Ph.D for anything is worth the time. And, as mentioned, no cost to her. She is being paid to take the program.

Hers is Sociology. So far it has done her well.

FWIW UC Berkeley. She turned down Harvard and Stanford and a few others. All free rides.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: I never had an allowance and I've never met anyone who had an allowance. I'm halfway convinced that the whole allowance thing was just something out of tv shows and movies.

I had one. I was expected to deal with going to the movies and buying my toys and books or save it for bigger purchases. To augment it I had to mow the lawn and such.

rohar: Interesting. I don't tie grades to money. There are certain things that I expect of my children. Grades is one of them. They don't get paid to be courteous, they don't get paid to keep the house in some semblance of order. These things are the bare minimum in child life. They get paid when they go over and above.

I just dug the pluming in for my wife's new barn. 5' deep trench 12' long. As we were settling down toward bed, I mentioned that the plumbing is done and tomorrow I need to fill the trench.

I woke up at 8:00 (slept in for some damned reason) the trench is filled in and my son is standing there with a shovel and a shiat eating grin. He's 7.

I don't reward mediocre. He got paid.

Nice.

Then maybe we should care that there are so many folks in that part of the world that want to kill Americans?

Or maybe we should care because human beings are human beings no matter where in the world they live? Or is that to un-Farky for everyone?

dahmers love zombie: fickle floridian: I wonder if Mara would deep-throat a penis of cheese.

See, I look at what teens today wear, and how they act, and I think "WTF are their parents doing?" And apparently the answer is "absofarkinglutely nothing". If that was written on my daughter's wall, she'd have been painting it within an hour, and discussing boarding schools in VERY remote locations the hour after that.

Did you notice that the name below the message is "Kate", not "Mara"? You're placing the blame solely on the girl in the picture without having all the facts.

Yes, my brother has two successful daughters that went to public school in Valencia so I am over-generalizing but when I taught at a private school we considered it was our responsibility to educate the kids, not the parents. That's what they paid us for and that was our job. My brother's wife is Korean and meticulous about overseeing their education so of course that makes a difference. But not all parents are like that and it's the school's responsibility to ensure the children learn regardless of what help they get at home. So ultimately it is the schools that need to improve. A good start would be ensuring that every student had a dictionary with him in every class.

When I was being photographed, what was running through my head was how the models on my wall are the people I strive to look like. I was wondering how we define beauty and where I am on the scale of beauty in relation to the pictures on my wall. Am I good enough?

I'm going to need some more information before I make up my mind.
