9beers: Notice how this guy keeps responding without mentioning where he lives.

Notice how this guy keeps responding without ever once actually being correct about anything. Nor has any actually asked where I live, so there's another point against you. Srsly - I'd ask how you managed to actually graduate HS, but I think that's already been answered.

Had you asked, I would've happily responded. So, for the implied question: Currently living in Ohio, could happily stay here. Also on the short list of places to live: NOVA, CO, TX, and maybe even WA. To date, I've lived in VA, Scotland, Italy, OH, ME, back to OH, TX, IL, more OH, DE, MD, NOVA, NJ, and back to Ohio. Hell, I've even traveled to a few other countries and many other states and cities. Your state sucks. Deal with it.

I forgot but then I also snert a bit when Yoopers croon about Kid Rock doing the video in part of Pictured Rocks where he's not wearing a helmet on his motorcycle and how it's to protest the right not to wear a helmet. (Which obviously now is a moot point...)

Ohio and Arizona are competing to see who gets their own tag like Florida

Ohio and (to a lesser extent) Arizona are WHY Florida has its own tag.

/it's really quite amazing how many times I see 'such and such fugitive of Ohio was found in Florida' or 'the kidnapper is believed to be heading back to his home state of Ohio' in news stories.

//family is so deeply rooted in Michigan we have an *entire island* and graveyard for ourselves. Or well, had. Most of the land was sold off when my grandpa died. It was pretty cool seeing my dad's name and date of birth carved in foot-high letters on the side of the bridge to the island though.

The "Ann Arbor is a whore" gave it away before he outed himself. Not many beyond East Lansing and Ohio are familiar with the phrase, and with the way he was ranting, he probably wasn't living here.

Although if I had to live in East Lansing, I might hate it here, too /cough

LadyBelgara: Although if I had to live in East Lansing, I might hate it here, too /cough

East Lansing is thoroughly awful until you spend enough time in Lansing, and then you recalibrate.

Still, that doesn't actually make East Lansing better. Still, a hell of a lot of college towns have bored their ways into the bottom of a toilet over the last twenty years as colleges and universities have realized they can make a lot more money by coopting their towns more aggressively.

The university as a model of civic corruption -- it's got serious traction.

I;m still not sure understand the point of the article. If you really want to point at a place that has no business existing do to geographic location for poor living conditions, go south. New Orleans ring a bell? Aside from the hurricane nature of the location, too many feet below sea level on a coastal area is just not to bright (sorry NOLA as I love you for food and culture),

Give Detroit a rest already.... it is *not* the president.

"In 1815, Ohio native Edward Tiffin, the U.S Surveyor General, visited the Michigan Territory and reported on November 30, 1816 to the Secretary of War that "there would not be more than one acre out of a hundred if there would be one out of a thousand would ... admit of cultivation. ... It was unsafe for men or pack mules, the ground sinking at every step and shaking for several feet around, having indications of being over a vast underground lake covered by a thin crust though which a man or mule might easily break and be lost.

lack of warmth: I could see not developing Lansing. Just thinking of that city gives me a sinking feeling.

Oh, no -- Lansing has had real potential. And development is often what's killed that.

Lansing is the city that tore down an architectural chunk of art, the R E Olds Mansion, to build a city-killing ring-road highway that they named after R E Olds. They've torn down historic landmarks to build parking lots, and the city's parking still stinks.

These are minor concerns compared to Detroit's, but in the same vein. Michigan has a long history of crapping on the future in the name of crapping on the present.
