So which is goofier? A religion based on an invisible omnipotent deity that divinely impregnated a peasant girl, creating a human with god-like qualities, who would then be ritually sacrificed and reincarnate from the dead after precisely, three days or one where the faithful talk to aliens?

Hey, at least the one with aliens has a very slim possibility of being true.

With Mormonism, you can have both! It's a religion based on an invisible, omnipotent alien that divinely impregnated a peasant girl, creating a human with blah blah blah.

And if you serve Elohim well through this life, you too could one day BE the invisible, omnipotent alien reigning over a planet, and people will try to talk to you about their stupid problems all the time.

The Raëlians frequently use the swastika as a symbol of peace, which halted Raëlian requests for territory in Israel, and later Lebanon, for establishing an embassy for extraterrestrials. The religion also uses the swastika embedded on the Star of David.[8] Starting around 1991, this symbol was often replaced by a variant star and swirl symbol as public relations move, particularly toward Israel. However, the Raelians have readopted the original version as their official symbol.

I don't want to hear anyone complaining that Israel doesn't stop settlers.

(oh wait, some of you may be)
what's important is the content, not how they look.
i liked the the raelians weren't as greedy as scientologists, yet they were pretty much the same thing.
that and the use of the lion king score while meditating.
i would not have been able to keep my shiat together if that happened to me.

Dude, have you never watched a undercover cop show in your entire life? When you go undercover you wear what the people you're posing as wear.
Her wearing a Peta shirt is no more an endorsement than a narc wearing a Grateful Dead shirt is an endorsement of LSD.

/but yeah, calling them cute is overstating it.

I often point out that in terms of empirical evidence (and mouldy old books of Bronze Age fables don't count, sorry), pretty much all religions are objectively identical in terms of plausibility. Many people forget that FSM started not merely as a joke, but as an earnest attempt to make that very point: That even a totally asinine system of faith made up on the spot is as defensible as any other faith you can name.

What I've often overlooked, and I'm very glad you pointed this out, is that a lot of things that seem even crazier are actually *more* plausible, if only because they ask us to believe less crazy bullshiat.

Right. They apparently don't teach this in school, anymore, but we all knew it: The swastika is thousands of years old, originating in Ancient India.

The Nazis adopted it straight from that tradition as an 'Aryan' symbol. The real Aryans were an Indic-Persian people. That may seem counterintuitive to white supremacists, but Nazi racism was strongly fueled by something very similar to the modern 'Christian Identity' movement. These people maintain that the Caucasians are the real modern Hebrews, and those weird brown people are not. You can see from that what also helped fuel the hatred of Jews -- who are real, but from this perspective seen as not the legitimate people of Israel. (Which conveniently solves the problem of being a fervent Judeo-Christian while hating Jews.) The Nazi version had the Nordic-Germanic peoples (whom they just considered all 'German') as the true Aryans: they rejected the notion that any modern brown people of India are real Aryans, in the same way. How they made that make sense, I can't imagine, but that's the story of how the Nazi swastika came to be.

The swastika, in various forms, is not of unique origin, however, and has many different stories, not all of them necessarily related. It's one of those simple ancient symbols -- pretty clearly a pictogram of the Sun -- that has recurred numerous times in history in different places. It still enjoys widespread popularity in much of the East. (Where they also enjoy reading Mein Kampf, and aren't interested in why that might bother us, as that history had almost nothing to do with them: the great 'world' wars actually overlooked enormous swaths of the earth; it's a big deal to us, but not to them.) It's pretty much only Westerners who, if you'll forgive me, get bent up over it.

Nightime's flyers feel their pains.
Drugstore takes down the chains.
Metal motion comes in bursts,
But the gas station can quench that thirst.
Suspension cracked on unmade road

And out on the subway,
Rael Imperial Aerosol Kid
Exits into daylight, spraygun hid

THIS, FFS!

Damn, it's infuriating that so many people don't know this. I once had a driver on one of my accounts tell me he didn't want to deliver to a certain address anymore because they had a gold statue of Ganesh embossed over a swastika in their front hall. It took nearly an hour of explaining, Googling and browbeating to get it into his head that fascism co-opted the symbol.
