Geek, but popular.

Everybody knew me (small town and dad was involved in local politics). Lots of classmates came up to me like they knew me when I had no clue who they were. I was #2 out of a graduating class of 274, but with a 50+% dropout rate plus migrant work families, the campus was well over 1000. (Texas 4A school).

Was part of the local "nerd herd", but that didn't say much, as 1/2 the girls in that clique were also cheerleaders. Was also in Drama, which got me touchy-feely with lots of the cute girls on campus, and being on stage put me in front of lots of people.

Was in interscholastic science and drama competitions. Cleaned up house in South Texas in science. Got a few awards in Drama, but also dabbled in a few other categories. (CX-debate, editorial writing, number-sense)

Was part of the yearbook photography crew, which put me in with the stoner and metal groups, and since I was in Basketball in Jr. HIgh, and I went to many sports events as photographer, I was also in with the athletic cliques. Was also on the school newspaper for a couple years. Gained a bit of respect one day when they were teasing me for being a twig and I dropped down and did 1-armed push-ups, 1 set per arm. (I didn't tell them that being a twig made that easy. 5'10" 120lbs).

Was the typical zit-faced metal mouth for 9th and 10th, and just zit-faced for 11th and 12th. No one was surprised when I spent a summer at MIT between 11 and 12, and wound up with a free ride to UT and on to work for NASA afterwards. Of course, being a zit faced geek, I was also stereotypically clueless when it came to finding a girlfriend.

We went to nationals twice as state champions.

I was the underachieving poetry magazine editor. Massive geek, massive stoner, and I think I was the only person in school history to be suspended from the quiz bowl team for lousy grades.

I drove teachers crazy because I was always sleeping in class and hardly ever turned in homework, then routinely got A's on tests.

Started as a quad jock. Realized I hated the superficial douches that I was lumped in with and migrated to the smoking section with all of the stoners. Still a jock, still considered a peer in good standing with the quad douches, but I was accepted into the smoker/stoner fold without reservation.

Not a long string, but one drinking buddy attended Univ of Illinois and while walking to class, a construction crane broke and a half-ton of wood landed on him, killing him instantly. Another died when he ran the family station wagon into a tree at 70mph.

I was in the chess club, a nerd who got mediocre grades and a mediocre athlete, girls were not at all interested.
My college years were such a contrast I still can't sort it all out. I lived it and I can't make it align with high school. I started to hang out with some volleyball players, learned real volleyball not the slap and carry stuff from high school. I still think I was born to the game, I became a top notch volleyball player in a few weeks. I was interested in my classes got good grades and girls were interested (at first it was because I was a jock--a bigger surprise could not have happened to me).
But high school...the word dork comes to mind.

Smartass underachieving genius rich kid. Listened to punk and hip hop but didn't feel the need to dress the part. Snowboarding was life wakeboarding too, didn't get along so well with the skaters though, too upper crust for them. Had absolutely no interest in high school social structure or activities nor gave a flying fark about what most people thought about my personal program, got along fine with almost everyone though. Made up for lack of interest in people by being incredibly materialistic. Didn't smoke weed but probably should have, passed on an absolute TON of pussy in hindsight, I probably still do.

Band geek, Stoner, Jock, Dropout. In that order.

Really? You're going that route? I was in the Navy. I have a check being deposited the first business day of every month for the rest of my life and I pay less for medical and dental each month than you do. Everyone I know that died was an accident or suicide. So if that's the best you can come up with, you have some work to do. I still win.

I went beyond alpha-geek and got my promotion to Nerd Lord.

Don't believe me? I was founder and first president of my high school's RPG and Wargames Club. It didn't have much staying power, however. We had about 30 members that could be counted on the play a mean game of BattleTech or Car Wars over the lunch period, but in '92, it was hard to find a teacher adviser that would stick their neck out for that kind of thing.

I was also on the honor roll and in the top 20 GPA (out of hundreds) list, which was enough to be pulled on stage in my senior year to have my future college plans announced to the school. I think some were surprised that I had both a NASA scholarship and an AFROTC scholarship.

I was also in the Drama club, which is an excellent way for an introverted nerd to learn to simulate normal social interactions. Had a lead in a play by the end of my senior year.

The odd thing was, is if the other party could put aside the indisputable fact that I was a big nerd bucking to climb my way up to merely a geek, I got along with everybody. Stoners, honor-rollers, religious types, fill-in-the-blank-geeks, average joes/janes, cheerleaders, even jocks, I got along with all of them, all except the nerd-haters.

Oh, forgot to mention, when I was a band geek, we were Grand National Champions.

QUiet introverted outsider. I was still decent at sport and I had an infamous criminal older brother, which saved me from bullying. instead I hung out with a lot of groups and belonged to none.

class of 86. potential high school gunman, fortunately the cia was mindfarking postal workers in the 80s. spent my senior year being picked on by a rotc nazi.

gas giant: Biology nerd until 7th grade, which meant getting bullied constantly. In an ill conceived attempt to stop that sort of thing, I then went full on skater pothead brawler asshole.
Started off a straight A student and turned into a mean little shiat that got into weekly fights and was always wasted in class.
Suspended bi-weekly.
Expelled for a full year TWICE.

I should probably also mention that my GPA was never below 3.7 in (crappy community) collage.
School was a cake walk once the social BS left the picture.

I was the sorta nerd/geek/almost jock started out tennis ended up varsity manager for 3 years and actually got a letter jacket soph year. did puter programing the year before hs and during hs did the band thing in elementary and jh but skipped hs and back to the band in college. could have graduated a semester early but slogged it out to walk the stage. The last semester was such a blast, took blow off courses for half a day and hung in the field house the rest. poor so worked and bought my own car. Senior year they passed 18 yo drinking law in texas... was the designated buyer and had ice chests full of beer at every game. Funny thing, in elementary and junior high I was the designated fixer and ran the projectors for the teachers cause they couldnt figure em out. meh things were different in the 70's
