ciberido: RibbyK: /I was in high school when Hippies roamed the Earth and four were shot dead in Ohio. Don't lay your 21st Centrury trip on me, man.

There were still hippies around when I was in high school decades later. I was one of them. I even had a headband and learned to tie-dye my own t-shirts.

For the record, typical 1960s Hippies were mature, annoying, smelly, idealistic, smart and expressive. They didn't work, had long hair, wealthier-than-normal parents access to beer and the best dope. At the 1968 Democratic Convention, for example, they'd crap into paper lunch bags and drop them from hotel rooms onto Chicago cops. This was considered a necessary protest to the Viet Nam War.

/You figure the logic.
//I suspect you've seen many of them every day in the wild in their new transformation: gray hair and grandkids.

I was the funny one, who pretty much got along with everyone. No drama at all.

The only organized school school function I did in 4 years, was the quiz team. Which really consisted of me answering 95% of the questions and a Chinese guy to answer the random math question. I still kick ass in bar trivia. Which unfortunately does not attract the ladies.

I was a stoner kid who also played football, but then at Valhalla High in San Diego, we were all stoner kids and we mostly lost 52 - 3.I got to run around pretending to play safety though.

It was an "open school" though, where you had tasks to accomplish within a trimester... do it or don't. I mostly didn't and went surfing.. until i had a conversation with the Scottish social studies teacher who liked my name and didn't throw me a D, which would have kicked me off the team. "Don't you screw me meph.. ."
That phrase alone made me drill down. and they don't run that format anymore.

Did the drama thing, won some trophys in speech, then played guitar with a bunch of older metal dudes (note: guitarists back then were only gamer geeks with a little more resolve. we got more pussy, even if i didn't know what to do with it)

Then i went to SDSU... that's a whole different story

Band geek, AP classes, Latin club, score keeper, etc. Could sort of float between groups, but was never on the inside. Bullied less in 11th and 12th grade than 9th or 10th, but that probably was the result of switching schools. I could egg on people pretty good, so some of it I probably deserved. I remember in 12th grade several girls confiding in me how insecure they were at the time. Don't know what that means.

There were... cliques in high school? Huh. I guess I was in the college bound orchestra geek segment. (Is that a thing?) There was a lot of overlap in my school. There were popular kids in orchestra, athletes in band, that sort of thing. The theatre club was huge, too.

Yeah, geeks had it pretty good at my (public) high school. And I was one of them.

I was a drama geek...totally. Was also an editor for the school paper. I obviously didn't have a date til college bc I was a nerd and all the guys I knew were gays.

2012-06-03 01:49:54 AM
My status in high school was weird. I didn't fit in with any established clique; I had long hair and dressed like a stoner for the most part (almost certainly my older brother's influence) but I also maintained excellent grades and was in the band.

I ended up attracting a dozen or so like-minded oddballs which became sort of an ad hoc anti-clique. Oddly enough, I ended up becoming the de facto leader of the group because I was on good terms with all of the other groups for a variety of reasons (bought weed from the stoners, tutored most of the jocks (and worked out with them regularly too since I played organized wheelchair sports and had to stay in shape to remain competitive)

/TLDR: I was king of the weirdos.

2012-06-03 01:50:04 AM
I was such an outcast that even the guidance counselor snubbed me.

2012-06-03 01:50:47 AM
ontariolightning: I had friends in many social groups, I wasn't popular but I was not hated. People never had a problem with me because I would mind my own business unless I saw someone picking on a kid.

I guess I was the floater, not making any lasting impact on anybody good or bad.
Flying below the radar is what I am content with.

I was pretty much the same. Band geek trumpet player that was best friends with both the captain of the football team and another guy who went to the Air Force Academy, they are to only two I regularly keep in contact with. I was also a solid B student and dated girls on the cheerleading team, in the band, and in the drama club. Pretty much acquaintances with everyone and friends with a few. My High School seems to have been one of the few that didn't have heavily entrenched cliques.

Wow, how things have changed: I have short hair now.

2012-06-03 01:53:38 AM
I never entirely hit the level of resume-padding douchebag, but I did get a little... intense in my focus on getting the fark out of my hometown so I was definitely branded a nerd. Sort of balanced out by the fact that I learned to hold my tongue when appropriate and I was 6' and 90 kilos by eighth grade, so even if I wasn't the most popular kid in school nobody messed with me either. Especially after it was established that I had enough markers to call in to... discourage the people that picked on one of my similarly-minded friends, who was neither large nor capable of keeping his tongue under control.

So... Alpha nerd, I guess?

//I may or may not have been in a couple of physical altercations as well, not sure what the statute of limitations is on assault so let's go with "I admit nothing". So maybe I'm the Delinquent as well.

I've always been under the impression that straight A stoners were the norm. I know all of my group was making grades on school days and money on the weekends supplying the parties.
