Actually, I was the defensive captain of the football team, I also was in band (percussion, so I still have street non band cred), and helped the math club build a hovercraft just because it was kind of cool. I could hang out with every crowd, and did.

I was... the absent one. I missed probably half my Freshman year - I was pulled out in March or April due to a brain tumor, and had been out frequently prior to that. (How was the brain tumor found? When my father called me a liar about my head hurting, he said "OK, we'll have another MRI {I'd had a tumor in 5th grade, and had followup MRIs every two years or so}, but it'll be negative and you'll get your ass to school." The irony? I actually was lying...)

The next year, I was the bullied one, the geek... at a tiny little private school. I didn't care about my grades (or much of anything else) at this point, since I was already f*cked on scholarships and I knew that my family couldn't afford jack shiat. Also, I pretty much hated everyone and everything. Then my father couldn't afford to send me to the school (surprise!), so I got transferred to public school - where i learned that my credits wouldn't be recognized anyway, so even the C's and D's I was getting in a few classes wouldn't count. Probably the most amusing thing about this school was that I had the top PSAT score (despite taking it as a Freshman.)

At that point, I was a year and a half short on credits... so I said fark this, I want to get my GED and just go to college... parents wouldn't have any of that, so they tried homeschooling me with a BS set of lessons (They'd make Santorum blush), followed by sending me to "Adult High School" where I was still bored and hated everything except the tech class. Finally one day while I was bored at school I wandered over to the testing area and learned that I could take the GED even without parental approval, so after I went home I told them "Oh, I'm taking this tomorrow.."

One amusing side effect of the whole thing? While I took "starting trig" (aka Algebra 2) *three times*, the only thing they ever covered was Logarithms. I didn't learn how to do sine/cos/tan until I started working as a structural drafter, where I use it *all the farking time*.

I was special.

Seriously, though, I (unknowingly) avoided the whole social structure and they avoided me. I had a good time in high school.

I was one of the rare specimens called the "AP Stoner". I hung out with the stoners and stoner-geeks, but was in honors and AP courses. Nothing felt better than being the only smelly and unshaven kid in a class full of preppies and bookworms.

I hung out mostly with band, drill team, and drama club people, put up with several assholes who constantly made fun of my broken nose, was yearbook editor-in-chief and in student government senior year (after getting my nose fixed).

I should clarify that the only reason I took the class three times is that I took it the year I switched school three times. Not because I had to repeat the class twice. It's just that I switched from a school that had started with them to a school that had them in the middle/end of the year to the homeschooling that started with logarithms.

Played sports, got good grades, just one of the regular people I guess. We didn't really have names for different groups of people except maybe the burnouts.

Tallest, most uncoordinated kid in school who was crap at sports, didn't smoke, couldn't play an instrument, and had braces on his teeth from grade 8 to high school graduation.

Had a really good sense of humour, which made me pals with the 'good' tough guys and kept me from getting my ass kicked by the 'bad' tough guys.
