Need a greeter?

Why not Zoidberg?

Dear Home Depot. I don't want to see three people standing at the entrance when I walk in. I want to be able to find some help in any of your departments instead.

R.I.P. Fry's Greeters

2012-06-02 06:13:30 PM
I'm more surprised that Fry's calls themselves a food store instead of all the other stuff they sell. Having an impulse buy candy aisle does not make you a food store.

I love Fry's, but I've started liking Microcenter more.

"Fry's Food Stores terminated the greeter program at its grocery stores Friday morning, store officials said.

Employees were notified in person, said JoEllen Lynn, a Fry's spokeswoman. She said it was a difficult business decision for the company."

It must be really difficult to decide whether to notify employees of layoffs by either email, slow mail, or in person.

So many options.

Looks like Fry's Food Stores and Fry's Electronics are not the same thing.

From wiki Link
"Fry's Electronics was founded by the heirs of Charles Fry after Fry's Food & Drug Stores was sold. Although they have similar looking logos and a shared family heritage, there is no affiliation between Fry's Electronics and Fry's Food and Drug."

Yea I'm with you on that. And could "Can I help you find anything sir?" from the 10 employees you encounter (except in plumbing good luck there). I'm so farking sick of hearing "Can I help you find anything sir" every farking aisle. At times it feels like the movie Airplane with the Hari Krishnas except I can't hit them.

Fry's Food and Drug lays off grocery-store greeters...

Leon Wohler, an eight-year Fry's employee, was fired Friday morning from the store near 33rd Street and Thomas Road...

Well which one is it? Fired or laid off? Kinda makes a difference when they meet the greeters at the unemployment office.

Amateur.

The Lowe's around here was really mismanaged a few years back. Could never find a cart near their building (I guess pushing a cart that's near impossible to steer a couple hundred feet in a parking lot is a benefit), cashiers were slow, and employees all seemed to huddle in dark areas of the building so as to not be disturbed.

A greeter's job is basically to remind you that you're being watched. Which can just as easily be accomplished with a sign and a few fake security cameras.

The others were laid off. Leon was fired for leaving his post without permission.

Once you walk in ask for the thing you want, they'll walk you to it. A lot easier than looking for an associate when you need one.

That last sentence isn't exactly true now. In the Fry's grocery stores, there is a Fry's Electronics section. Hell, they even have a furniture section.

Rather shocked to learn that those who founded Fry's Electronics founded this chain and had anything close to something resembling "customer service".

I don't need a greeter. Stand that stupid f**ker in front of one of the seven vacant cash registers, okay, genius?

Er? I go to two local Fry's groceries. I haven't seen either of those.

Wait, a grocery store with greeters? It's weird enough that they had them in the first place. They kinda make sense with the potentially intimidating big box stores, but... groceries?

One sells chips that are fried.

The other sells chips that fry in your computer.

I design grocery stores that are the size of bix box stores. 98K square feet on average. You don't need a greeter at any store. You need to be staffed at the right level to make sure your profit margin is higher than comparable stores while having lower prices. It can be done.

I find it shocking that there were no other positions the greeters could have gotten into.

Its not like the rest of the tasks that keep the store is going require a rocket scientist.

Fry's food stores were sold off in the mid-80's to Kroger in most places except for the San Joaquin valley in California. Save Mart stores bought those up. However, in Stockton, there was a chain already using the Save Mart moniker; so the former Fry's stores became S-Marts.

Many grocery jobs require the ability to lift heavy things. These greeters are not robust, generally speaking. Typically, they worked only 4 to 16 hours a week. Fry's has to trim its labor costs, and the marginal employees should be the first to go.

They are being offered severance pay (unusual for part-timers) or can reapply for any jobs that may be available.

The Wal-Mart near me has basically done away with greeters.. They put them so far away from the door it makes them ineffective.. And once 10 PM rolls around, they're gone and the store becomes a klepto's paradise.

The Wal-Mart near me is a PITA if you need to just run in and grab something. There is no time, day or night, where the few checkout lanes are not stacked at least four deep with one derptard in the front arguing over why his cartload of junk food and beer isn't completely covered by his Lone Star card, and the exhausted cashier can't make it clear why.

I have never seen even a quarter of their checkout lanes open, and they took out the self-checkout lanes in this store because theft was too rampant. I've been sorely tempted to just walk out without paying plenty of times.

Thank FSM I'm moving soon, otherwise I'd go to the sporting goods section to grab a handgun to jam in my mouth.

Praise Cheesus: Fry's food stores were sold off in the mid-80's to Kroger in most places

Also, many of the the Fry's Marketplace stores were once Fred Meyer stores, which in turn were once Smith's stores. Some of those stores in turn were originally Smitty's stores. Smith's bought out Smitty's, Fred Meyer bought out Smith's and Kroger bought out Fred Meyer.

If you go into the household general merchandise section of many Fry's Food or Marketplace stores, you'll notice Fred Meyer labels on many of the products.

Do they still stock a decent selection of 12-gauge double-barreled Remingtons with a walnut stock, cobalt-blue steel and hair trigger?
