eraser8: Kyndig: By the same token, I had an african american basketball coach who regularly used the term "pasty white asses" in his "motivational" shouting. Nobody gave a damn.

Why doesn't anyone here seem to get the fact that the issue here isn't that the teacher is white and the student is black?

That may be why the news station latched on to the story -- but it doesn't seem to me the issue between the family and the school.

The issue is a teacher insulted a student.

I get that people get frustrated. But, if you're a professional, you deal with it without lashing out at a child.

You ddn't RTFA, did you? This was covered there and above.
Please keep up with the rest of us,

cybrwzrd: I may be a racist jerk for saying this, but if Blacks want to be respected as contributing members of society, why do so many of them act like antisocial jerk wads who only care about themselves? Sure, plenty of whites act this way too, but since moving to Atlanta, I have only met maybe 3 black people who are not farking sociopaths. I don't want to believe that sociopathy is a genetic condition, but I have yet to find overwhelming evidence that it isn't within the "African" American community.

When rude, anti-social behavior becomes the acceptable form of "rebellion" for all the misdeeds that may or may not have been done to your ancestors... well, it's a hard circle to break. When you can convince everyone else to grasp at any reason that isn't your own fault for your unacceptable behavior, then there is no reason to try and break that circle.

CliChe Guevara: Black teacher in almost entirely black school uses a black reference in regard to a black student and the black principal has no problem with it. Actually no one but a sandy vagina'd parent looking for any reason to deflect blame away from their disruptive bully of a student has a problem with it.

No news story here. At all.

It's not racism when anybody but white people do it.

I've been to Atlanta. Those three were tourists from Kansas.

pounddawg: Not enough info but I guess...

/kid is trouble student
/teacher has finally had enough one day and comments
/Mom goes full on "crazy" at the meeting
/principal decides it is best to end the school/student relationship

All that could be correct (or, you know, entirely UNcorrect), and yet: "Nappy-headed" is by now an infamous phrase, and while we couldn't expect every bark-chewing yokel to know the story of how a famous and very successful radio personality lost his job and dignity over it, there's no way that a charter school teacher doesn't. At this time in history, for an authority figure to use that phase in front of others can't be anything but an expression of power and a deliberate attempt to demean someone by dint of race before their peers. At this time in history, it comes very close to calling the girl the N-word in front of the class -- and she knew that. And so do you.

Kyndig: FTFA: According to Williams, principal Giselle Edman, who is African-American, shifted the blame onto Persley, saying, "Bad things need to happen to mean kids."

92.5% of the school is african-american.

The article doesn't quote ANYONE besides the parent being outraged.

There's something we're not hearing here.

I agree. Nevertheless, the remark itself is inexcusable.

Wow, this thread really brought out the stupid in a lot of people. And though I've always been aware that there are thinly veiled racists on Fark, I had no idea how many, and how despicably cowardly they can be. It's shameful.

That is the impression I also took away from the article. I mean, the kid already has those little "anger creases" in her young, soft forehead. I kinda doubt they are from some serious studying. I feel bad for teachers that have to deal with students like this.

You sound like a sniveling whiner. I'm pretty sure that most of the racists on FARK are hardly, thinly-veiled. ZOMG! Thar be racists on teh internets. I'm so far above this sort of behavior that I will now express extreme outrage! Welcome to reality.

MattyFridays: fracas: In which we ascertain the depth of the pockets of the Century Academy For Excellence.

I'm guessing it's a charter or alternative school, where kids who have already flunked out or are "not succeeding" in a standard school go.

That said, with no absolute confirmation of the teacher's ethnicity, I'm going to leave the comment alone. I'm going to guess the student was prone to acting out. I take these stories always at face value, because of helicopter parents who think their child can do no wrong.

Not saying the school is completely blame-free either, but I'd like to know if the kid was a good student or being a disruption to other kids actually learning.

What does any of this have to do with the teacher's use of a racial slur when speaking to this student? Is there no other type of word that could have been used? Or was this teacher's "inner Klansman" finally let loose in a torrent of unbridled reality?
This is supposed to be a teacher, a person with a supposedly larger vocabulary than most due to their exposure to all the schooling and training that enabled them to reach this position... and this is the best they can come up with?

It's like the morans (probably white) who complain (many in this thread) that they are not "allowed" to freely use the "n-word" in any circumstance they feel like when black people can do so without hesitation.

My first question would be "is there some reason in particular that you would WANT to use that word?"

trappedspirit: They all do, do they? Those people? Because those people are playing the race card to get their way ALL THE TIME.

Eh, live somewhere near a predominantly black area or Indian reservation for a while and see how often the race card gets played. You'd be surprised. Especially when someone doesn't get their way. "YOU'RE JUST (not letting them have their way in some form) BECAUSE YOU'RE RACIST".
