When the driver stated the mother just grabbed the kid and left, it didn't impact me, until I saw the video of this woman racing off without a single word of thanks to either person let alone apology for being so clueless and allowing this to happen to her child. WOW. Perhaps she ran as fast as she could so as to not be recognized and cited by police for child endangerment.

Babies are basically invincible in terms of stuff that could happen to humans pre-technology. You drop a baby from ten feet, it'll just bounce. Dog grab it by its trousers and drag it across the yard? Only slightly dirtier than usual. Terrifying diseases that scar you forever? Eh, it's just chicken pox, behold the ridiculous immune system.

Unfortunately, we do have technology now, and babies apparently take their nigh-invulnerability as a challenge.

If this had happened in China it is possible that no good Samaritan would have tried to rescue the baby. See the recent Fark vid entry:

Ah, that wasn't it. He sped his truck down the hill honking his horn to warn other drivers. It got the FedEx driver to stop or else the baby might have been a bit flatter. "Luckily when I was honking the horn, a FedEx truck was going through the intersection and stopped because he heard the horn honking."

I literally just witnessed a ~6 year old girl run right into a pack of roller derby players doing laps to warm up for their bout. Just as she stumbled one of them scooped her up and delivered her to the sidelines. Darwin averted... for today, kid.
