it's not so much what brees said, it's what he's had to respond to. the saints are willing to throw away a season they think is already shot to lowball brees. brees deserves better from them and he knows it. i wouldn't be surprised if he decided to hold out and the saints said "oh, well...our season was lost anyway"....then brees says, "see ya" when his contract is up.

Sounds like the owner really wants to move the team again, and needs to destroy all that inconvenient goodwill that's been built up with the fanbase over the last 5 years or so

Seems unlikely, considering Benson is about ready to buy the Hornets as well. But you know, anytime you can piss off your Top 5 QB for completely petty and arbitrary reasons, you have to do it.

Calm down Falcons fans. Drew Brees aint going anywhere yet. You are still stuck with Melty Ice leading your team and Michael Vick leading the love in your hearts.

That would be incredibly dumb. First, the Saints fans would revolt. Season ticket sales would plummet. No one is paying to see Chase Daniels. Realistically, if the Saints did want to part ways after this year, they could hit him with another franchise tag, and let him negotiate with another team, get a right to match the offer, and if they declined, the team that signed him would have to give the Saints compensation in the form of draft picks. The CBA allows a team to use the franchise tag on a player three times. There is speculation that Brees and Condon are arguing that a player can be hit with the tag only three times no matter how many teams, which would make this the second time he's been hit with the tag, and if he signed, the difference in his salary between a first tag and a second tag would be about $3 million. As for "lowballing," the Saints offered Brees a contract before last season that would have made him the highest paid player in the NFL. The argument is about how the contract will be structured. If he truly believes he should be paid $19 million next year as opposed to $16 million if he signs the franchise tag, then that explains the supposed "huge difference" because a base salary of, say, $20 million would only be $1 million above his franchise tag rather than $4 million above. I looked up the CBA and read these provisions, and I think Brees/Condon's interpretation of the franchise tag rules is somewhat, um, creative.

This has nothing to do with how much the franchise tag will pay for one year. Last time he played under the franchise tag he got injured and was told he probably would never play football again. He wants guaranteed money of a certain amount. I'm sure they are not arguing about his yearly salary.

I think him and his agent are waiting for the ruling on his previous franchise tag, if he rules the one before the current CBA counts towards the limit then he would be in line for a huge payday next year or the saints would have to let him go elsewhere and he would get more money.

Either way this is how the saints usually act, its why it took someone with Brees positive attitude to turn it around, one player can save a team and franchise.

Here is a link that spells it out more clearly, if they are right, which they very well may be, then drew would be in line for a large increase and it would cause a lot of teams grief.

Just to put things in perspective, Brees is being offered an annual salary approaching the salary of every CFL team in the league combined.

Are you talking about the franchise tag or what?

And imagine that, he's making more than a 3rd rate canuck league just like other players who carry their teams out of mediocrity. If I were him I would hold out as well, he will have plenty of jobs waiting on him once he leaves his playing days behind.

How's that putting it in perspective? The CFL is the NFL's minor league....wait, thats the NCAA, I would rate the CFL under them.

Additionally, Drew Brees is an elite quaterback and should be compensated like one. Additionally, he played before under the franchise tag, got hurt and got screwed by the team that did it. He wants a guarantee in place to avoid that happening again and if he has to sit to make his point, them damnit he may just do it.

I could see many teams welcoming him, as much as I hate to say it, I could see Jerry Jones telling Romo to GTFO if Brees was available.

Jerry Jones should tell Romo to GTFO if Brees was available. He should tell Garrett to also GTFO if Payton happened to be available at the same time.

What I meant by "hate to say it" is because I'm an Eagles fan and Brees on the Cowboys would scare the ever loving hell out of me during football season but I have to say:

Eli Manning
Drew Brees
Michael Vick
Robert Griffin III

in the same division, playing twice a season? OMG would that division be orgasmic.

So two good QBs, one unproven, and one injury waiting to happen? Doesn't sound very threatening to me.

No, this isn't really about his yearly salary as much as it is about how much is up front, how much is guaranteed, etc. The Saints want to minimize the salary cap implications and not end up with a ton of money owed if he ends up with a career-threatening injury like Payton Manning. Drew Brees wants as much money up front in case he ends up with career-threatening injury.

After what he's done for them I fail to see why this is a problem, they got a good deal the last time so he should be rewarded a little.

I think making him the highest paid player in the NFL fits the description of "being rewarded a little."

As always the sticking point is guaranteed money, anyone could sign a contract averaging the highest paid player over the life of the contract. That doesn't mean they will ever see anything close to that per year.

2012-06-02 05:26:28 PM
He probably wants in the range of 20-24 mil per year, because that's his worth.

He hopefully also realizes playing for the Saints this year is basically asking to be injured. If he's smart he'll never suit up in that uniform again and just sit out a year and kiss them goodbye.

Yeah, especially over the life of the, probably 5-6 year contract he's going to want at least 15 mil per year guaranteed.
