I hated Gumby when I was a kid. The Gumby voice was the worst part of the claymation character.

I remember watching Gumby and Pokey when I was a kid.

But I could get a lot more entertainment out a bag of those little green Army men and some firecrackers.

a long time ago people would take a Alka-Seltzer to calm an upset stomach. they had a little boy character that was their pitch man way back when. his name was Speedie.

not to be confused with the old post office 'toon, Zippie.

or the high voltage avatar, Reddi Kilowatt.

So, did all kids do this? Magnifying glasses, bb guns, but mostly firecrackers. A buddy and I did this well into high school. We kept some of the coolest looking burned and maimed army men.

Memories...

We had a ditch out in front of our house that was shaded by trees and covered in a layer of gravel. That was the perfect killing field. Yes, some of them died a grusome plastic death from burning death sticks and incoming .177 steel ball rounds.

My condolences for the loss of the voice of your idol. I am old enough to have enjoyed watching the little green guy when I was a little girl in the late 1960's. Gumby was a sweet gentle cartoon, in contrast with the more action oriented kids shows. Perhaps the "Mister Rogers" of cartoon shows.

Why did some of the shorts seem to start in medias res? Gumby's already on the freaky-faced moon?

Friend of mine worked for Art Clokey back in the 80s in Sausalito. Gumby was voiced by Dallas McKennon for those episodes.

Thanks for the links. I do remember the dough cartoon That triggered more of my recollections of the show. I probably did find it scary when I watched it. But somehow my overall memory of the show was that Gumby was a sweet gentle character. My big brother teased me for watching it because he thought it was a sissy, baby show.
