(TSN)   For the Olympics there will be over 5,000 hours of televised coverage available on several networks and online... in Canada. Americans on the other hand will get 100 hours of Bob Costas with a pretty gymnast and lots of flags   (tsn.ca) divider line 84

And every second of every hour will be taped delayed for East Coast Prime time.

Fark you NBC/Comcast/Universal. With a sharpened bamboo pole dipped in runny bovine fecal matter.

I'd rather have that than one dipped in cilantro.

Yeah, US coverage pretty much sucks. But at least they'll make all the events available online this year. The stupid US centric thing they do here is just bullshiat. It's so obnoxious.

U.S. coverage is really shiatty now. When I was kid in the 70's, whichever major network had coverage pretty much only showed the Olympics. It was on day and night, preempting regular programming.

As long as I can watch the badminton online at work, I'll be happy.

That's because NBC never treats the Olympics like other sports broadcasting.

They treat it like a reality TV show and they build narratives around key athletes.

dj_bigbird: You forgot the 5 minutes on the history & struggles of each American athlete.

More like 30, minutes leading up to the 30 second race.

NBC has destroyed the Olympics in the US with their crummy coverage.

NBC ruined Vancouver 2010 for the west coast. 3 hrs delay with the events happening in our own time zone. NBC sports are terrible, its all about some dumb personality driven, fake made up narrative they came up with .. and not about actual events. Its as if they decided I want "Olympics: The Reality Series" rather than the actual games.

I have never been more sick of gymnastics than I was in 2008. My kids' perception of the olympics is going to be a big garish reality show with manufactured drama- featuring athletic events where the winners are determined by political judges. And all with a 12 hour broadcasting delay to accomodate post-production and maximize ratings. Fark you, NBC.

2012-06-02 10:42:07 AM
An average hour of Olympics coverage in the U.S.: 20 minutes of commercials, 20 minutes of Bob Costas talking about the Olympics, and (if you're lucky) 20 minutes of actual Olympics.

I miss ABC hosting the Olympics. As well as the Stanley Cup Finals.WTF is up with games 3 and 4 being on their sports network I can't afford to buy right now?

Have taken issue with NBC sports since the mid '90s.

I say it every year and of course everyone agrees with me. Give the coverage rights to Disney. Now I know that everyone is going to look at me like I'm crazy, but listen for a second.

Disney owns ABC and ESPN. ABC will show the mainstream coverage, such as gymnastics, track and field, volleyball, swimming, and other sports that are popular for some odd reason. ESPN will show everything else over their system of Networks, which means that ESPN U will not be show college football for at least a week.

NBC's coverage sucks because of the fact that they don't know who to do anything but news, which is also on a 3 second delay, so most of the stuff gets out to the general public before it happens.

At least let a network that knows about sports cover it.

ESPN/ABC tried but Comcast/NBC offered more money. So they get the Olympics until at least 2020.

ABC's Wide World of Sports knew how to present the Olympics: simply, with intelligent commentary, and some mild patriotism when necessary. When they lost the contract US Olympic coverage quickly cratered into the candy-coated monstrosity it is now.

It's basically a network-approved version of this:

Actually, subby, every single Olympic event will be streamed live by NBC over the internet in the United States.

NBC executives decided to shift from their longtime philosophy and make every event available as it happens, convinced that the plan will build interest in the Olympics and not siphon off viewership from the traditional nightly broadcasts.

Continue your ignorant NBC-bashing.

And chances are, the only reason they agreed to that I'm sure is because they realized nobody wants to watch their crummy tape-delayed coverage when they can just go online and get results in real-time from various websites. The sad fact of all of this is: despite everyone knowing the events are tape-delayed, they will still probably get better TV ratings showing it in prime time compared to whatever re-runs or summer crap they would normally broadcast in the spot.

The problem with this theory is you'll also have to watch the US women's air pistol team, Shamu and Mamu.

It was tape delayed.

You watched it, you watched a tape delay.

Unless you were in Canada, or nearby.

The Field House (capacity 8,500) was packed.[16] The home crowd waved U.S. flags and sang patriotic songs such as "God Bless America."[10] The game was aired live on CTV in Canada, but not ABC in the United States. Thus, American viewers who resided in or near Canadian border regions and received the CTV signal could watch the game live, but the rest of the United States had to wait for a delayed rebroadcast. My favorite tape delay was a few Olympics ago, probably 12 or 16 years ago. NBC was showing some sport, I forget what but then Bob Costas cut in for a "live shot of the US Women's soccer final." It was like early first half and about a minute later the US Women's team scored. As they celebrated the goal NBC cut back to whatever the hell was on. Awhile later NBC cut to another "live shot." This time it was 1-1 and miraculously in this live shot, the US scored within a minute again and then NBC cut away. Half an hour later or so and NBC cut back to another live shot of US Women's soccer and it was the last few moments before the whistle blew and they won the gold 2-1. The 5 minutes of "live" soccer NBC decided to show of a 90+ minute game allowed me to see both US goals and the final moments as they won. Thanks NBC.

The problem with the streaming on the net is it would be too easy to just switch over to porn instead of rubbin one out to some mildly sexy events like syncronized swimming, water polo or speed walking like a true American patriot.

2012-06-02 12:37:12 PM
They've had setups where they showed every single event in the US. If I recall correctly, they did that for the Atlanta games in '96. They had the Olympics running non-stop on three channels. While they didn't show every last event, they showed a lot of them.

No one watched them.

Good God....the NBC Olympic budget would be wiped out if they did that...they'd spend all their money on Hoda and KLG's booze. But, hey, that train wreck may be better than watching endless taped viewings of the 25m fishstyle swim race

I'll just reserve judgment until the US Open in two weeks. No one can absolutely ruin a major like NBC.

"Hey, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are tied with two holes left. But, we now cut away to Jimmy Roberts interviewing Johnny Miller about next week's LPGA coverage."

2012-06-02 01:03:35 PM
Nice that Canada is doing all that coverage....

However, it is usually blocked to US viewers online...so that still sucks

As for NBC coverage....ABC did the same thing when they had the Olympics all those years. NBC just copied what ABC did. Big difference is that ABC had Jim McKay as its host....and he was way way better than Bob Costas.

NBC should have kept Jim Lampley...and replaced Costas with him. Lampley did the late nite coverage for ABC when they carried the Olympics
