Yeah, but have any Democrats actually said their opponents should die in a fire?

thank you . Where am I looking specifically?

I did find this

Don't ever take anyone else's word on something as important as birth control.
Ever. Ever. Ever.

I think a lot of people don't even follow what's going on and pull the same lever they've been pulling for the past few decades

Right, and if they do hear about it, it's waved off as "business as usual in politics".

for a long time that was the case. Both sides were indeed bad and in more or less equal measure so it became what people perceived as a lesser of 2 evils sort of thing. While both sides remain bad, one has gotten all George Thoroughgood and the other remains Michael Jackson. I think a lot of people don't pay all that much attention and just keep on keeping on with D or R or whatever without regard for changes that have happened. The R's are straight up, almost to a person, certi-farking-fiable these days.

No no no, I'm starting to rethink things. You're probably right. There is no way to account for that when performing a gender pay gap study. No way at all. All women take years off from their careers to have babies. And they all stay home. All of them. No possible way you could compare women who do not ever take time off or have kids with men who do not take time of or have kids. Nope.

Hold on, I bet you a man would be capable of adjusting for this in a study.

I bet paid maternity and paternity leave would fix this up. You pay a guy to go home with his wife and new baby, I betcha alot would jump on it.

I have two kids (Canada). We get 12 months total. How we split that is between my wife and I. She got the whole 12 month each time. 100% pay. Some European countries give up to 24 months. Might be excessive but the 3 months you get in the US is a joke.

gulogulo: mrshowrules: Women have a biological condition that hampers their ability to advance in a career.

Well, not all of us want to have babies. And there's still prejudice in the work place, where I've seen women held back from promotions on the -chance- that they might get pregnant. It's not like it's policy, as Wangiss suggests. It's much more insidious, and not so obviously deliberate, but it's there.

Arguably gay men are the ideal employee. Reasons why there are so many of them working in DC. They frequently have less family commitments, can work crazy hours, travel and basically live for work.

I'm a dude and my career is hurting because of my family commitments. I frequently have to miss work for appointments. I'm not flexible in terms of working late and the young childless employees or old people with grown up kids (or no kids) are the ones getting the promotion. You cannot prevent all inequality or discrimination but you address the big gaps and live with the rest. Equal pay for equal work and 12 months paid maternity are a very good start.

True. When I had my daughter (11 years ago now), it was actually termed "short term disability", and my state (NY) paid some (I forget how much, but it wasn't much) for 6 weeks (8 weeks if you had a c-section). I actually had private short-term disabilty insurance, so I got just about 100% of my pay (they subtracted the pittance the state gave out from what they paid though)

Still... 6 weeks is just not long enough. I was lucky enough to have a "work from home" agreement with the company I was with then (I could bring my daughter with me when I needed to go in) but I don't know many who were that lucky.

I think that's an extremely naive way of viewing the world. For one thing, it's a touch too rational for the voting proletariat, whose particular partisan leanings definitely play a factor in which politicians are viewed as the "greater" of all "evils".

Sure, they might say "all politicians are crooks" or "all politicians lie", but at the end of the day, they still play their favorites.

Which is, incidentally, how we get threads like this one.

I think a lot of people have internalized "both sides are bad". They don't even think in those terms; they see a reprehensible act or statement by a politician, and assume that all politicians would act the same way in the same situation.

Sure. The mindset just brings the parties into balance so they can rationalize playing their favorites, instead of having to explain "Clearly A is worse than B, but I'm voting A anyway" to themselves.

Hey, pointing out our blatant racism shows you're the real racist
Hey, pointing out our blatant policies favoring the already exceptionally wealthy people at the expense of the middle class shows you're the one committing class warfare
Hey, pointing out our blatant attacks on women and statements advocating throwing hurling farking acid at them shows YOU are really the one engaging in the war on women.

Orwell would be impressed.

Conservatives have been conditioned this way for so long even their core platform requires cognative dissonance. SMALL GOVERNMENT!!! Okay but why all of the authoritarian penis goes where rape wand legislation? GOVERNMENT SHOULD STAY OUT OF HEALTHCARE!!! Okay, but again with legislating an unecessary proceedure involving a rape wand. STIMULUS BAD WE NEED TAX BREAKS!!! Okay, but most of the stimulus was tax breaks, infact Obama passed one of the largest tax breaks ever that benifited anyone who was working. OBAMA WILL TAKE OUT GUNS Okay, but your guy Mitt has signed in more gun bans as governor than Obama has.

Owell had nothing on these folks.

It's just an "expression" and I didn't know it had real world implications? This is a liberal MSM media hatchet witch hunt and I never did anything wrong?

I'm going with, "I'm sorry I offended anyone who is sensitive to female assault and disfigurement."

That's perfect!

Nah. Needs more blaming of the "oversensitive"- implied preferably.

Easy fix: "I'm sorry if I offended anyone who is may be sensitive to female assault and disfigurement."

Did you miss it? This tall tale has evolved a lot already, and you're not keeping up. We're not just going to "hurl acid at" certain female Democratic senators, no. Republicans are literally throwing mutilation-pH acid directly onto the FACES of (and this part is thanks to you--thanks for catching it) all women.

This idiot is a douchebag, and so are you.

/And so am I for pointing it out.

Good to know you're doing your part advancing the tall tale from "women" to now "all women" and "hurling acid at them" to "directly onto the FACES."

You're such a charmer, lennavan. Now what the hell was the point of your post?

Just to make fun of you making the same hyperbole mistake you accused him of. That's all. Neener.

Really? Because I got all that crap from this thread. That's what I was talking about. You can actually see it grow, like Biollante, from one guy blowing smoke, getting larger and larger until it's institutional misogynistic hatred, indicative of an undeniable subhuman nature that infects anyone with an R. (I may have added a touch of exaggeration that time, but not much if any.)

Kittypie070: ...the very ignorance and illiteracy and misogyny that create the climate for these acid attacks can and does bleed over into the political realm. Nicholas Kristof, the New York Times op-ed columnist who traveled to Pakistan last year to write about acid attacks, put it this way in an essay at the time: "I've been investigating such acid attacks, which are commonly used to terrorize and subjugate women and girls in a swath of Asia from Afghanistan through Cambodia. Because women usually don't matter in this part of the world, their attackers are rarely prosecuted and acid sales are usually not controlled. It's a kind of terrorism that becomes accepted as part of the background noise in the region...

I also love all of the GOP shills/trolls that are justifying this because he didn't mean all women, just the ones he disagrees with. It is also in no way proper to form a comparisson between this and farkers in the Middle East who often do it to punish or kill wives/daughters that are percieved as being sinful in their eyes.

Yes, be that guy. Be so partisan that you have to defend this guy.

Not one single person in this thread has defended this guy. Ever once. At all.

I know he never said all women. Do you understand that I'm talking about things folks in this thread have written and gotten themselves worked up about? I know exactly what he said. I've even quoted it verbatim. You're going on as though I made that shiat up. It's all upthread from well-meaning but overreactionary people.

This guy should be fired, but it's not really my decision. And we won't be seeing him go to jail either. There's a reason for that. Overreactionaries refuse to understand that reason on principle.

How would you classify all of the various mandatory trans-vaginal ultrasound laws?

What do you call the insertion of an object into a sexual organ against the wishes of the "patient"? What term would you use when such an action is mandated by a central authority?

skullkrusher: mrshowrules: Publikwerks: mrshowrules: lennavan: umad: You're probably right. One gender taking years off from their careers probably doesn't have any affect on the amount of money they make or the rate at which they advance up the ladder. No affect at all.

US maternity leave is not paid either.

You are not even paid for those lousy 3 months? It is even worse than I thought.

I think its rather telling that lordaction refuses to condemn the hateful ideas this man proposed. I guess that means he wholeheartedly condones, agrees, and supports throwing acid on women. Big surprise.
