Oh wow that one was good. Let me make a list.

elite media
gas prices $1.79 when Obama was inaugurated
regulated to death
corporations are charging more because they're desperate
health care premiums rising
inflation is too high and yet interest is too low

They really should have mentioned Kenya or Ailes. That would have rounded it out nicely.

i love the gas meme.

GAS WAS $1.79/GAL BECAUSE THE ECONOMY HAD CRASHED

remember, gas was $4.50/gal that summer (i know. i had to power a generator to the tune of $100/day when a storm knocked out our electricity for 5 days!).

These people are delusional.

...and yes, I am actually much better off than I was 4 years ago. What I'm not, is better off than I was 8 years ago. Going by the logic of these morons, guess that means George Bush's failed policies are the cause of that.

The May report by The Conference Board showed consumer confidence at its lowest point in the last five months.

Which must mean that, 5 months ago (i.e. within Obama's administration), consumer confidence was at its highest point in the last 5 months, right?

The fact is that the American people can feel it when things are not improving, and despite being told that the nation is making the turn toward a strengthening economy, the public feels the squeeze at every turn.

well, we could always make it more difficult for corporations to ship our jobs overseas...that might help a bit.

Yes, we keep being told things are getting better, like the advance estimate of the first quarter's gross domestic product, which was originally reported at 2.2 percent. Oops, that number was revised at the end of May to be a tepid 1.9 percent.

2.2% = evidently okay
1.9% = EVERYBODY PANIC

Of course we are all told, based on our antiquated way of measuring inflation, that the cost of goods and services in America is really not rising much at all.
Perhaps that is the case, but it seems hard to leave a grocery store these days with any reasonable amount of products and not drop at least $100.

"It seems hard to leave a grocery store these days with any reasonable amount of products and not drop at least $100."

SEEMS hard. ANY REASONABLE amount. You know. Data. Can't argue with that.

As for the thrill we should all have over the decline in gas prices, well, we are nowhere near the average price for gas on the day Obama was inaugurated. That price was $1.79.

And it was 4.12 in July of 2008. Maybe something happened to the ecomomy. We may never know.

Let's just tell the truth: Our health care premiums are rising, interest rates on credit cards soared partially due to overreaction by the Obama administration, college tuition is getting out of hand and the list goes on and on.

Why hasn't Obama hit the "lower college tuition" button yet?

cdn.theatlanticwire.com

Looks like it increased less than 100% from 1992-2000. Then it increased a bit under 150% from 2000-2008. It wasn't Bush's fault, but it definitely wasn't Obama's.

Can't even bother with the rest of this derp.

This article is so stupid, and a reason why many people should be prevented from hearing economic reports.

The spring drop is predictable. However, long term, this drop is NOT AS BAD as the previous three drops. Yes, things are getting better. I know you all expected some magic, based on how you see black people in a antique literary sense, but I am sorry, our president is not Uncle Remus. Even if he was, Uncle Remus never had to contend with a Republican House drunk on obstructionism and the musky odor of naked page boy.

2012-06-01 11:01:54 AM
I love how desperate the spin from the Obama people is becoming - Romney and Obama are locked in a virtual tie five months out, the economy is tanking, and Romney is not repeating McCain's mistakes of failing to go after Obama. But we're supposed to be happy that under Obama the joblessness rate isn't plummeting faster? Yeah, that's such a winning argument.

The reality is that what Obama has done has hurt the economy and taken what should have been a robust recovery and turned into into a lingering weak economy that's barely able to stay afloat. The "stimulus" was a failure because it was predicated on utterly incorrect economic assumptions - Keynesian stimulus programs don't actually work in reality because the amount of spending that would actually raise aggregrate demand in a modern economy would be so great that it would bankruptcy the country. ObamaCare was both a political and a policy disaster for the country and for the Democratic Party - it was a political disaster because it exposed Obama's tin ear for what the population actually wanted, and it's a policy disaster because it was based on erroneous assumptions and creates even more perverse incentives in a system that's already filled with them. And those are Obama's "signature" achievements.

This bad economic news just cements the idea that Obama is a failure on the economy. 69K new jobs isn't even keeping up with job turnover. The total U-6 rate also shot up another 0.3%. There's nothing good in this report, and watching Axelrod try to spin the report this morning made me almost feel sorry for the poor bastard. There's nothing more painful than being forced to defend the indefensible (but that should be nothing new to flacks for this President).

Watch next month also be slow, and then watch as ObamaCare gets shot down by the Supreme Court. With the Eurozone falling apart, there's just not any good news on the horizon for Obama.

I've heard people say that this election wasn't going to be close, and I've resisted that call because Obama is personally popular and has (or so I thought) a strong political operation. The last few weeks are making me think that not only can Romney win, but that it might not be that close.

Irish airlines started charging for extra stuff (like baggage over a certain weight) before O'bama was in office. Clearly that was his fault. Maybe Aer Lingus just knew that he would eventually be elected and wanted to get a head start...

Wombat, the economy is not, not, not tanking. In addition to this last report being a total non-surprise, we're being affected by Europe, which is being affected by Austerity. And you know what is mega-awesome? We have politicians who truly DESIRE to tank our economy by beating the strawman of the debt to death, as through debt is what is keeping us down. Honestly, if we fixed our economy in a bipartisan way, we could put ourselves in a strong place, and actually benefit from the rest of the world being in thr throes of recession, or cuontries figuring out things aren't as hot as they thought (China). But NOOOOOOOO, Republicans are so hell bent on winning, they'll squander a terriffic chance of setting ourselves up to catapult out of this, and keep us in the mud longer, so their friends can rape and pillage.

Tanking. Jesus Christ.

Listen, we need to be honest about this, the job report is not good, in fact it is quite bad. The reason for this is obvious, we are cutting back spending during a time of economic instability. Unfortunately Obama lost the moral high ground on this years ago by cow-towing to the deficit hawks for temporary political gain. Now the obvious argument is that the Republican congress is full on retard and will not allow us to pass the necessary spending to pull out of the downturn, but that is a hard (if not impossible) argument to make because right or wrong the president is saddled with the responsibility for the economy.

At this point he just needs to nut up and go full Krugman.

the irony here is I am of two minds about Romney winning. On one hand he seems committed to continuing the disastrous fiscal policy being put forward by the teabaggers. On the other hand he is not a total moron and has the advantage of being totally disingenuous, so if he gets into office he might do the smart thing and increase spending. the question is whether the current lunatics in the house will go along with their republican president or really have bought into the crazy and will fight him n further stimulus.

Oh yeah, because 1.9% economic growth and increasing joblessness is a sign of a great economy...

More desperation - it's always someone else's fault, isn't it? How many more excuses will Obama come up with? First it was Bush, then it was ATMs, then it was the Japanese tsunami, then it was the Koch brothers, then it was the Republican House, now it's Europe. Excuse after excuse after excuse.

It's been over three years of Obama being President, the first two of which he had a Democratic Congress on his side. What did he do instead of working on repairing the economy? Passed an expensive and unpopular (and likely unconstitutional) health care bill. It's time for the excuses to end.

1.9% GDP growth and persistant unemployment is categorically unacceptable to the American people, and for damn good reason. Millions of people out of work is not a sign of a functioning economy. Millions of people who have been out of work so long that they might permanently lose job skills and the opportunities for economic advancement is a farking disaster.

If the Obama message is going to be "buh, buh, buh, it could have been worse" that's a stupid message, and Obama will lose decisively. And he should.

You want to fix the economy? Stop having government get in the way and unleash the spirit of American capitalism that made us what we are. Stop trying to turn this country into a European-style social democracy, because for those of us who are paying attention that model sure as hell isn't doing very well right now.
