(Fark)   So WTF? Am I just old school or should I be able to actually read a well written story with factual events without having to click and be subjected to a video? Can't anybody write a goddamn story anymore? Has the world gone crazy?   (fark.com) divider line 71

I agree. Journalism has really gone down the tubes lately.

I agree with Subby. If I want to watch the news on TV, I'll do that. I come online to READ the news. I don't want your crappy video.

I don't want to watch a goddamned video for "news" online, ever. I also can't stand blogs parading as news that are, in fact, poorly written op-eds based on s legitimate source, or worse, another blog.

Poor pitiful me.

I agree. There's nothing worse than looking for instructions on the Internet, clicking what seems to be a reasonable link, then finding it's a 5 minute video that you have to sit through instead of a document that you could skim in 15 seconds.

What I want to know is where they find these dinosaur cameras that take 200x200 pictures.

You know, when they even bother to take a picture of what's being reported on.

they quit paying journalists to research actual stories. you won't get a woodward/bernstein/deep throat/watergate today.

you just won't.

you'll get a thirty second sound clip and gossip about celebrities divorce/tits

Hear hear, Subby. I'm grateful when sites warn me that there is video in the story and on the rare occasion when I click on those links I quickly navigate away if there is no accompanying text. I don't know if it's lazyiness, cheap bandwidth or enforced ad watching that causes sites to do this but it is irritating as fark.

2012-06-01 01:51:17 AM
It seems odd to me that they spend so much time and production energy to put out less content and info.

That said, I work with people who only pay attention to news they can watch, even online.

Plus many places don't caption or subtitle their videos, so deaf people are left out if there's nothing in print.

At least I know I'm not alone. I usually keep the sound on my computer muted so I don't have to listen to the crap when it starts up unexpectedly.

For this very reason, I don't even own a television and only see one blathering away when I'm in a bar somewhere.

Oh, and by the way I think the same about posting videos in discussion.
At least Gunny isn't using that same tired rickroll crap

All the SEO folks are screaming that you have to have a blog/vlog otherwise The GOOGLE doesn't know you exist.

2012-06-01 02:42:57 AM
Agree, Subby. The videos pi$$ me off, especially since nearly all JUST HAVE to lead in with a commercial.

I happen to LIKE reading the WRITTEN WORD. I suspect these publishers are just getting lazy. It's way too easy to shove a video on a page these days instead of actually typing a story -- taking time to spell check the spell checker results and to actually correct mistyping.

Besides, all of the reporters these days sound the same. I'm from the era of the 'Huntley/Brinkley Report on NBC.

This.

News outlets can no longer afford to pay educated writers who understand the tenants of journalism. They just need people who can crank out stories quicker than the other guy.

2012-06-01 03:46:45 AM
I agree, and have totally noticed the trend here, even when it's a news story I could have read in like 60 seconds. And this is coming from a guy who has a degree in journalism! Yes, things have changed because the constant news cycle demands it. There is no time for quality because a print publication will want you to research and write three stories a week for the print edition, at least one or however many you can crank out for online news everyday, AND post pieces to a blog. Add all that up and it equals poor quality news. This is why I have given up on the news profession, at least until they figure out why everything they put out is crap. The last news story I ever wrote was an 'earnings' story (the news story you print the day a public company makes their earnings release via a conference call) and my competitor at another publication had a story done and posted online before the earnings call was even over. This is what it has become.

100 Watt Walrus: tenants of journalism.

Tenets. They're basic principles, not renters.

Add me to the list of people who hates having to wait while some talking head sloooowly reads off the news to me (or, worse, two talking heads having a fake discussion about it) when I could have read the whole thing myself in a matter of seconds. (and for what it's worth, it leaves me with a lingering dislike of their advertisers, too)
