If I got a paper cut, that's a tragedy. If you fell down an open manhole and died, that's comedy.

At work, my friend Johnny and i speculated what a 65 yr old homeless man's face might taste like. We then proceeded to come up with possible food products with bum in them; macaroni and bum, bum and potato soup, shish-ka-bum, bum dogs etc...coping with tragedy with humor.

It really makes me wonder if people are actually buying the Mayan 2012 scenario and using it as an excuse to get buck wild. Because they debunked that theory like a month ago. Western society is coming to a funky crossroads regardless.

Yeah, that's really the only plausible explanation.

I spent the weekend at my sister's in Montréal. As I was leaving town the news was breaking about the dismembered corpse discovery - a bit over a mile away from where she lives. You can bet I was making every zombie joke I could think of, the more tasteless the better. Actually thinking about this seriously - realizing that while I was reading Where the Wild Things Are to my beloved baby nephew some sicko was killing and eating someone a few blocks away and posting video of it to the Internet - isn't something my tiny brain can handle.

I just saw the victim's face I really have been avoiding the jokes about this. This is a tragedy where someone is scared for life and another dead because of drugs. Normally I would be all laughing along but I just can't find the humor in this or the acceptance of drugs in modern society if you wanna get high fine get high but look at that victim's face and tell me it's worth it? I was starting to take the side of the prodrug people but this...this has made me change my mind completely.

Not all drugs are identical. There's a hell of a difference between something like pot or shrooms and something like PCP or crack, or whatever crazy shiat this guy was on

I mean, caffeine is a drug. It alters your mood, you can get addicted to it, it's lethal in high enough doses. But nobody thinks we should ban coffee beans.

Not all drugs are the same. Potheads (and even heroin addicts) aren't going out and eating people's faces.

Also, criminal penalties working in terms of keeping people away from dangerous drugs. Most opponants of the status quo aren't "pro drug" so much as they are anti-prohibition. The war on drugs did nothing to stop that dude from eating that guy's face. We don't need drug laws - we need better treatment and resources for people with mental illness.

The guy was growling as he was chewing on a dude's face. Given how we're drowning in zombie imagery these days, the chances of anyone taking it as a serious and somber reminder of the frailty of human brotherhood was about as likely as Michael Bay's next film winning a Nobel Peace Prize.

AverageAmericanGuy: We make jokes because it's our way of coping with the tragedy.

TrojanRabbit: Coping mechanism.

Sure, humour is a great coping mechanism. But what do people who live hundreds of miles from the scene of the crime need to cope with? The thousands of people who started making jokes about it aren't traumatised, they didn't see anything they didn't subject themselves to and more importantly, they didn't at least take some time to work though the supposed trauma they needed to cope with.

Based on these assumptions I am now going to make a controversial statement that will shock the way we look at people forever: People (on the internet) don't care about suffering as long as it happens somewhere else. They will make jokes about your suffering if your suffering is brought on due to stupidity or if the situation was really weird. Other people will distribute those jokes because they are funny, not because they need to cope with what happened to you.

Yeah what a surprise.

My daily job is dealing with all sorts of human misery. People would be HORRIFIED at the jokes we make. Horrified.

Man eats another man's face off? You can either collapse in horror or make a joke.

/Still run across cases that invoke a genuine "FYL..."
//Imagine how bad those cases must be if we joke about mere death and rape

I saw Mr. Poppo's face too. His life is over. Maybe it wasn't much to him, but it was his and now it's over with.

I'm pro-drug. It's not because I want to get high. It's because that a pro-drug attitude would lower crime rates, contain epidemics, and maybe even generate a little tax revenue. But never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine anything like this happening. But the thing is, if there had been a tolerance for drugs beforehand, the chemist that brewed up this poison never would've had a reason to do it.

But the djinn is out of the bottle and now we have a problem.

News should be about things that impact society and sure, they can insert the odd fluff piece into the paper or work it into the show. But some guy being killed in a weird way doesn't warrant all the interest it has been getting so far. What do people at the other side of the country care about some solitary event? In less than a week this whole thing will die down and the general population will forget it happened. Sure, once in a while journalists and editors will try and wring the last few bucks from the corpse, of what was at best a human interest piece, by claiming they get shocking new information about what happened. But I predict that most people will read the headline and move on. You can't base public policy of this (since there will always be people who react badly to something), you can't do anything to prevent this from happening again (the determined or mentally ill solitary person is hard to predict since there is no communication to intercept) and there is no opportunity for people to do anything to defend themselves (random attack etc).

So what we have here is:
A) a human interest story
B) a "look we have something to tell you so please keep watching so we make money"-scheme
C) something to be used as a reason to claim "zOMG drugs are bad m'kay?"
D) proof of how 'dangerous' society is becoming (all across the country due to an incident in one place a thousand miles away)
E) all of the above

Personally, I blame the internet and televised news for all the fluff pieces that get touted as important enough to make sure everyone knows it. If there was no continuous broadcast there would be a lot less trivial bullshiat in the news (while not necessarily bullshiat, a murder is rather trivial as seen from a(n) (inter)national view).

Now I'd love to hear you explain why someone in a drug induced rage eating another man's face isn't news.

/At least that is my view of what news should be

a lot of people stop for one quick drink after work. if one of them gets stupid, gets drunk and crashes his car in a DWI will you suddenly be anti-alcohol?

with the tragedy story you have one incredible tale the likes of which you've never seen before in your life and you're going to use that as a guide post? this eating the face incident is an exception, an incredible rarity, a horrible event that will probably never be repeated. lighten up and go try some bath salts.

Sure, there's media complicity. But that whole "gawking at suffering" thing isn't just the internet...it's human nature. Ever driven past an car accident and NOT looked? If so, you're the only one...everybody else is, and that's why traffic is moving so slowly even though there's plenty of room and the wreck's all the way on the other side of the freeway.
