Saying that zombies have a mental illness is making light of the very real struggles of Zombie Americans.

Based on the article, the Seattle shooting could not have been avoided regardless of the mental health budget the state had. He would not seek care and for some reason, was not deemed dangerous enough to be treated involuntarily.

At least how I read it.

While I understand Ms. West's concern, I believe that when frustrated by such disregard for human suffering the most prudent course of action is taking a slow, deep breath and then counting to potato.

Actually, it could have if Washington State had civilized gun laws that kept people from manufacturing, importing and selling deadly weapons.

You are an established liar who consistently lies regarding the intent of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Your claim that total prohibition of civilian firearm manufacture and ownership is "civilized" is dishonest.

I don't think they are mentally ill and I am pretty sure no one got hurt.

I'll try to be more careful not to joke about an event on the internet when it might coincide with some other unrelated tragedy that might happen to strike the friend of a friend of Jezebel writers. Or whatever she was talking about.

The world is a tragic, farked up place sometimes. But being somber and serious about everything at all times isn't going to change a damn thing. Making horrible, inappropriate jokes about tragic things is a coping mechanism. It's a fundamental aspect of human nature to want to experience death vicariously through others.

Any tool in the hands of knowledgeable or determined user can be deadly.

To someone farkers, somewhere on fark.com, this IS a remote story about some weirdos on the news, and to turn our cheap joke (and not even a particularly good joke, -okay, sometimes they really are particularly good) into your pain is egotistical and biatchy.

One of the most common misconceptions that the public has is that all outrageous crimes must be committed by the mentally ill.

This is often not the case; Anders Breivik appears to be perfectly sane, albeit very disturbed in his thought contents, David Parker Ray wasn't mentally ill, despite torturing and murdering an estimated 60+ women, and Ted Bundy wasn't insane. Dr. Park Dietz did an excellent job proving that in spite of the 17 murders, cannibalism, necrophilia, and bizarre fantasies of Darth Vader and the Exorcist, Jeff Dahmer was not insane.

It irks me that some individuals on the extreme left would seemingly like to completely eliminate any sort of criminal responsibility from the perpetrators of particularly heinous crimes; they always seem to want to push victim out of view, and then dwell on the perpetrator's horrible past, upbringing, etc. The fact of the matter is that a lot of people have absolutely abhorrent upbringings, but the majority don't go on to become mass murderers or serial killers. Obviously both upbringing and genetics have roles to play, but ultimately the mental health professionals' job, when it comes to people like this, is to protect the general public from their sadism, and the evils they would otherwise perpetrate. You can't just magically cure these people by expanding a "safety net" as the writer seems to suggest.

At any rate, I cannot stand Gawker, Jezebel, or any of that particular network of news bloggers. Their writers never fail to smatter the article, regardless of subject matter, with what I can only describe as insufferable self-aggrandizing narcissism.

The face-eater story is particularly gory, upsetting, and leaves the public aghast, unable to explain the crime, drugs or no drugs. So the public turns to dark humor as a coping mechanism for the disturbing subject matter; police, doctors, coroners, basically all professionals that have to deal with death or horrific circumstances do this all the time. Gallows humor is comforting to deal with matters that are otherwise intensely disturbing. This Jezebel writer would be able to acknowledge this, were she not so pathologically narcissistic.

I was going to say how much I agreed with your post (especially the last paragraph) but apparently Drew didn't pay his internet bill because this is all Fark would let me quote. WTF?

Regardless, I had this exact discussion with my 18 year old an hour ago, I was pleased with her grasp of humor as a coping mechanism rather than letting something like this turn a person into a cowering hollow shell.

And thus a new meme was born.

"...so you can make some big har-har zombie punchline on your Facebook..."

Most people on Facebook are har-har zombies anyway. I mean, in theory, you should understand this phenomenon much better than you do...

"So a guy ate another guy's face. That sounds pretty wacky, until you consider the fact that a guy ate another guy's face."

So some creme-filled blintz tried to write a "serious" and "deeply philosophical" statement on the condition of our society today on a website normally devoted to misandry and making impressionable women neurotic. That sounds pretty important until you consider the fact that it was written by some creme-filled blintz on a website normally devoted to misandry and making impressionable women neurotic.

"Stringing together a bunch of awful tragedies for the purpose of making a lazy listicle..."

Ow, my listicles!

"Or, I don't know, maybe I should make a hilarious meme about the time your mom died! "

Maybe I should make a hilarious meme about the time your mom died, or your face died, or your mom's face died?

Maybe I should make a hilarious meme about the time your sense of humor died? Oh wait, it's been done... to death apparently.

"Yesterday in Seattle (where I live) a man walked into a cafe and shot five people-not people I knew personally, but people I'd met, friends of friends."

I am your father's, sister's, nephew's cousin's former roommate!

/not even a meme, by the way...

"...or that it's never appropriate to respond to unthinkable tragedy with macabre humor."

I can see that- were you to become a homicide investigator- you'd never get...

/sunglasses

...the last laugh.

/YEAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!

"But I'm not feeling particularly charitable toward wacky zombie jokes today."

It's okay. I'm pretty sure that feeling is mutual.

"There's no such thing as undead people, only dead people."

And people that are dead from the neck down. Those never seem to go away either.

"No one deserves to be publicly ridiculed for their identity - gay people, fat people, black people, poor people..."

...people who write dumb articles for insipid gossip sites on the interwebs people...

"...but when we ridicule and marginalize mentally ill people, actual innocent people get killed."

Um, no. No they do not. Also, are you implying that mentally ill people are not "actually innocent"?

Apparently you don't know what mental illness is (this may be because you're suffering from one). You might also have little notion what ridicule is... or marginalization... Aw hell, I'm convinced that no sane human being could string together these particular words in this particular order and in this particular context.

Seek help. Soon.
