It's not illegal as long as the money you are using to do it doesn't come out of your campaign fund. In this case they couldn't prove that it did, in fact all evidence pointed to it being a gift to him that was separate from donations into his campaign fund.

This just goes to show that only the dumbest people in the country get placed on juries. And that is a fatal flaw in our legal system.

They can on 5/6 counts. Mistrial is the jury not reaching a unanimous decision and saying they can't then it essentially becomes the judge saying mulligan. The prosecutor has to decide if it$ worth it to retry him.
