Bathia_Mapes: Exception Collection: Damn, she's not 18. If she was, I'd suggest she turn this into a run for office. We need more people like her in the government. Hard working and humble - wonderful combination.

She's expressed a desire to become a doctor. I hope that come wish comes true for her.

It makes me really wish I was in a position to pull strings to get her a scholarship to any medical school she wanted. She obviously hit the ground running, and is capable of kicking ass and taking names...turning down a $100k infusion of easy money only goes to show that she's a class act. People may not remember her name for this after a few years, but I think she's one of those memorable types who will continue to stick out in the minds of the people she meets for the rest of her life.

Of Jesus, here we go. When kids aren't going to school and they're farking off, breaking into your house or generally causing trouble in your neighborhood you'll all cry about how they should do something about it. Well, they are doing something about it, and one decent kid broke the rules and was punished, boo hoo, that's what laws are for. It keeps all the other little a-holes from wilding out.

I had sympathy for the girl, but now, not so much.

Sorry but don't cry about how hard it is to keep up and then when you are given a golden ticket by the public at large (who, as we all know, sucks more times than not) and turn around and say "Oh, it's actually not all that bad."

Fine, then go to school and shut the fark up about how hard it is on you.

Bah, any greedy bastard can be a good doctor. Not that it's a bad choice for *her*, but we need decent politicians more.

She's pretty bootstrappy though. I doubt you really want a politician who not only believes in personal achievement but who exemplifies it.

You kidding? I love truly bootstrappy people. It's the blowhards that either start with a massive head start or with a big boost from aid they want to deny others that drive me crazy.

aharown: this isn't heroism or humility. it's a prideful refusal to accept charity, the belief that she should not accept help. when you need help, that's foolish and immature. there's nothing wrong with needing a leg up. we all have once in a while (yes even you, you didn't get it all through your own personal genius). i find it too bad that she didn't take it, a mark against, not for, her...

killershark: She may also feel guilty about the fact that these people donated the money under the false assumption that she was worse off than she really was. I don't blame her for the story -- that's the reporter doing a crappy job -- but she lives with her dad, who does in fact have a job where he makes money to provide for his kids. She seems to at least be smart enough to know that some of those donors may not have loosened up the purse strings if the full truth came out the first time.

This theory seems the most accurate from what I've read on the story.

I have a funny feeling about the Help Diane Tran site though. I've had plenty of time on my hands this past week and spent a lot of time watching the dollar amounts grow on this site. Once the donations reached $100,000.00 yesterday, there was a lag in the posted increase. The bar then was removed from the main page & showed up on the donate link which still stated at the time that all donations (minus processing fees) would go to her. The amount was around $100,300.00. I checked again this morning and the donation page still stated money would go to her along with the payment options, but the bar had disappeared from anywhere I could find on the site. Then, around midday today (CDT), the page was updated to where it presently states the fund is closed & they had reached their $100,000.00 goal.
With so many people around the world becoming aware of the story, the donations had been increasing significantly over the past couple days. I find it hard to believe that they just ceased coming in last night when the option was still there to donate so it makes me wonder how much more than $100,300.00 this organization will be providing to her.

It may have been a problem with the site since they're using a small firm to collect donations instead of something like PayPal. And btw, if you do a little more digging, you're going to get a little more suspicious of these "good sumaritans". Got bored and did a little research on the "About Us" links on the HelpDianeTran.com page. The Louisiana Children's Education Alliance was a non-profit founded by a guy who uses it to promote education alternatives like home-schooling. He also is a consultant/investor in GatorWorks, which designed the site, and Anedot, which is taking the donations [and also probably why PayPal isn't an option]. All those sites share the same business address. So was the whole thing done out of the kindness of their hearts or was it also a marketing ploy to generate more business for his companies under the guise of collecting donations under a non-profit banner?

2012-05-31 08:17:49 PM
Okay, so hopefully the money does go to helping some other struggling kids. As opposed to lining the pockets of some unscrupulous "charity" collector.

That's a nice slap in the face to everybody who donated. Dumbass tag needed.

I sincerely hope down the road that this girl meets someone as awesome and full of quality as she is.
It's always a real tragedy when you know someone really, incredibly awesome, and then meet their other half, who is basically acting as a boat anchor around their necks.

it's not pride.. it's a belief that there are certainly people out there who need it more than me and I shouldn't take it when I don't absolutely need to.

In your rush to jump up on the cross next to her, you may have missed the small fact that she isn't unemployed like you or your dad were.

Her problem is too many jobs on top of school commitments.

You =/= Her.

Identify with someone closer to your worth. Maybe painthuffer guy would be good for starters.

Even though she missed school because she worked for a good cause, she maintained "Honor Roll Status." She should be commended. Individual circumstances are gone in this country. The line was drawn a looooong time ago. Your either a "Snowflake" or a "Loser" nowadays. it's BS.

2012-05-31 11:22:35 PM

scottydoesntknow: Awesome for her and I hope she gets everything she needs to be successful, but wouldn't throwing a student in jail for missing school cause them to miss even more school?

/Texas justice system embarrasses me almost every day
//It's "almost" because some days I just don't read about their asinine actions

It's like the absolute insanity of tossing tax evaders in jail.

Of course, the US "justice" system is really more about revenge than justice anyway. Lawmakers really get upset personally when people break their precious laws and respond as if they have been insulted.

Bunch of goddamn cavemen.

No, they really can't be. Most doctors are pieces of shiat in my experience. A lot of people can go to medical school. Most of them are assholes who think they're patients are people brought to them to fark over.

If she can't accept it for herself, she should really accept it for her siblings.
Personally I think this young lady is the exact type of person I'd would be most happy with receiving the donations. She would use it for what it was for to her best ability.

THIS is an EXCELLENT idea!

If the $$$$ was converted into scholarships - especially including one for Diane's brother - perhaps she'd change her mind about accepting it.

Not sure how the whole banking thing works - but if ya put money in special accounts that don't get touched for a specific time - doesn't it accrue higher interest?

Quote from the judge:

"If you let one of them run loose, what are you going to do with the rest of them?" Judge Lanny Moriarty told KHOU TV. "A little stay at the jail is not a death sentence," he said.

This judge does not display the judgement and common sense that is needed to fulfill his duties in a professional manner.

$50.00 of the money was given by me and I have the receipt to prove it.

I gave the money to Miss Tran without any reserve to be used as she sees fit. If she chooses to give it to someone else, so be it.

Basically there were certain phrases that immature people would post just for the 'glory' of being first in a thread. The filter started as a way to make them look more ridiculous in an attempt to shame them and save the signal to noise ratio.

These days I suspect its merely more of a tradition.

This is why you can see your boobies in your own profile :)
