Damn, she's not 18. If she was, I'd suggest she turn this into a run for office. We need more people like her in the government. Hard working and humble - wonderful combination.

She's expressed a desire to become a doctor. I hope that come wish comes true for her.

Bah, any greedy bastard can be a good doctor. Not that it's a bad choice for *her*, but we need decent politicians more.

True, but she should be allowed to fulfill her dream. Politics aren't for everyone, and not all doctors are greedy.

Some doctors, and nurses too, volunteer for organizations like "Doctors Without Borders" and "Operation Smile".

Agreed. Plus she knows the shiatty state of public schools in TX. It's a wonder anyone noticed she was gone with ballooning class sizes.

It should probably be donated to anyone willing to run against that asshat judge that put her in jail.

2012-05-31 01:46:10 PM
Awesome for her and I hope she gets everything she needs to be successful, but wouldn't throwing a student in jail for missing school cause them to miss even more school?

/Texas justice system embarrasses me almost every day
//It's "almost" because some days I just don't read about their asinine actions

She'd either end up totally ineffective or corrupted by the system.

Oh, not going to disagree there... but being a doctor's a relatively common career choice of the compassionate and good people of the world. Far too few get into politics.

Unfortunately, that $100,000 might end up in the pockets of people "who just don't want to work".

Wow. I totally understand where she's coming from, and frankly, more people need that kind of humility....but she does need the money. It's not a sin, nor a sign of ego/greed, to accept money when you need it. Yes, there are people out there struggling more than her, and it's incredibly sad that one can say that, but that money can help her and her siblings get above water, and help her realize her dream of becoming a doctor, or putting her sister through school, even.

The world needs more Diane Trans.

She has now shown more class and humanity than ol lanny the shortshafted. Good for her. Texas sucks ass.

So if you have 10 unexcused absences in the state of Texas they think the best solution to this is to JAIL minors for 24 hours ? Seriously ? What kind of dumbass law is that ?

Maybe and I mean maybe jail the parents but to jail the child ?

And the Judge says an overnight in jail isn't the end of the world ? to a 17 year old or younger kid ?

WOW is all I can say.

2012-05-31 02:53:10 PM
"There's some other kid out there struggling more ... than me," she said.

It's "struggling more than I am," you dumb broad! What kind of honor student are you?

Great kid who got a bum rap. Only in Tx.

2012-05-31 02:54:05 PM
Leave it to Texas... Miss too much school go to jail. Can't go to school because you're in jail for missing too much school, miss more school and spend more time in jail. Can you imagine what the discussion with her cellmates will be?

"What are you in for?"

"I missed too much school."

"WTF? They can arrest you for that"

She is probably learning more life skills in her two jobs anyway than she would in the classroom.

FTFA: After Tran's parents got divorced, supporting her older brother and younger sister fell to her. Her mother relocated out of state and her father often worked too late to come home, according to Mary Elliot, Diane Tran's boss at her weekend job.

After going to school from 7 a.m. - 2 p.m., Tran worked full-time at a dry cleaner's. On weekends, she helped Elliot throw weddings. Tran said that some mornings it was just hard to get out of bed.

a) Isn't this illegal? Aren't there child labor laws which prevent minors from working full-time during school sessions?
b) high schools start at 7 and let out at 2, now?

If she was working full time at a dry cleaners, that's 3-11p....... for five days. Exactly when is she getting her homework done? Plus she's working on the weekends?

The judge was trying to make an example of someone who shouldn't have been made an example of...................... but there's more to this story.

Also, FTFA: Her mother relocated out of state and her father often worked too late to come home, according to Mary Elliot, Diane Tran's boss at her weekend job.

Wait a minute, I thought both her parents were ghost. As in, abandoned them. If her dad is working late and just doesn't come home because he's actually working to support the kids.......... that's a hell of a different beast than saying 'See ya!' and not having any contact whatsoever.

This is a feel-good story, and she has a nice attitude........................ but there's more here.

FTA:"If you let one of them run loose, what are you going to do with the rest of them?" Judge Lanny Moriarty told ABC

You're a judge. You could try using judgment.

2012-05-31 02:55:03 PM
Can we just nominate her for sainthood? She could at least use it to help her siblings. Especially if she is going to college soon. Best of luck to her.

So she'd rather feed her ego than accept some charity that would do a ton of good for her siblings that she's apparently working so much to support?

Mmmmkay.

2012-05-31 02:55:30 PM
Im sure her siblings will appreciate that. After all, her humility is more important than their quality of life.

FTA: "Houston judge charged her with contempt and sent her to jail after 10 unexcused absences in a six-month period, which is the law in the state of Texas.
"If you let one of them run loose, what are you going to do with the rest of them?" Judge Lanny Moriarty told ABC News affiliate KHOU. "A little stay at the jail is not a death sentence," he said."

Actually, it CAN be a death sentence. Doesn't this judge ever read the farkin' news?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that 100k would have been somewhat helpful in making that whole doctor thing a reality.

HA!! Asses in seats on any given day is how schools funding is calculated. They couldn't give two shiats if any of them ever learn a damn thing more than they better have their little meal ticket asses in school when roll is called the tally man calls their name. Just to be clear this is an administrative issue, NOT a teacher issue.

It's nice to know there is at least a little hope for the next generation.

2012-05-31 03:02:10 PM
Wow. If she can afford to give up the money she not struggling nearly as much as she has let on or doesn't really give much of a shiat about her younger or older siblings since she could do so much more for them with the money. Refusing opportunities like that is a totally irresponsible and selfish act. There will ALWAYS be needy kids and that 100K won't be a drop in the bucket, but it could have been a great boon for her family.

They may be able to convince her to take the money in the form of a scholarship or educational trust. I'm sure she'll grab a full scholarship anyway, but the siblings are going to need the cash.

2012-05-31 03:04:47 PM
Take the damned money already. Plenty of people wish a pile of money would come along and help every day, now be one of them and take the damned money.

A man once faced a flood, and a cop drove up and offered him a ride. The man said "I'm okay, God will keep me safe".

So the flood waters rise, and the man retreats to the second story and a boat drives up, the pilot offers the man a ride. The man said "I'm okay, God will keep me safe".

The flood waters rise some more, and the man retreats to his roof top. A helicopter comes in and offers rescue. The man said "I'm okay, God will keep me safe".

The man washes away and drowns, he gets to heaven and says "God, I though you'd keep me safe?" to which God replies "Well, I tried, but you turned down the cop, the boat, and the helicopter. "

/This atheist knows his humorous parables.

I'm less angry about the judgement than I am about who brought this girl to the attention of the police in the first place. You would think a school's guidance counsellor or principal would be aware of her situation and help provide some kind of working alternative for her.

Oh wait. Texas. Nevermind.
