I agree with the suggestion that Adam Baldwin would be a good choice. He does not have the bulk of Reacher, but he is the right age and has the general size and attitude.

Does anyone have suggestions for books like the Reacher series? I tried a few of the Doc Ford books, but they are not the same.

That's for sure. That's for damn sure.

Once I realized that Child was British it made it more tolerable to me. Those brits and their excessive use of words.

Much better actor than most give him credit for.

The books are crap, utter dross and shiate. But wtf? The character is describes as almost 7 ft tall, and they pick Tom Cruise, who barely breaks 5'?

That's who I was thinking of, but I always forget his name. He'd also be a good Roland for the Dark Tower series.

John Sandfords prey series and the Virgil Flowers books are good reads.

No. For what they are, a cut above pulp fiction, the Reacher books are pretty damn consistently fabulous. And Reacher is 6'5", which, is about as much from 7' as Cruise is from 6'5".

Personally I don't like this. Reacher is a big dude, and he's not particularly handsome. His size is a very big part of who he is and while I actually think Cruise is a fine actor, this ain't his role and I am disappoint.

You might try looking up Agent Pendergast. Bit more fanciful and outlandish but still pretty fun. I'm a sucker for a recurring character.

Normally I'd say 'pish posh acting is what they do'. But in this case I agree. We all know cruise is a midget and at least for fans of the books, it's really going to take them out of the movie.

It's not even enjoyable schlock. They're badly researched, badly written Mary Sue books. I was shocked to find out English is in fact "Lee Child"'s native language. It's Twilight for dudes.

He is supposed to be 6'5" 250lbs or something. This is horrible casting.

I lost a lot of respect for Child.

my guess is that was child's diplomatic way of saying he disagreed with the selection of cruise as reacher. child, however, is on record as saying he doesn't let movie people tell him how to write his books, so he won't tell them how to cast or direct their movies.

and, that line was specifically in regards to a question (long before the movie was cast) as to who he thought could best play reacher.

Read 'the Relic' years after seeing the movie. Wasn't sure they were the same as they seemed to cut Pendergast out of the movie.

Robert Crais has a character named Joe Pike that I think is similar.

My choice for Reacher is Opie from SOA.

Klippoklondike: Teknowaffle: Bathia_Mapes: BillCo: Great headlne. It's just too bad that they are going to let a DB like Tom Cruise screw up a good book.

They're going to need a crapload of CGI to make him look even remotely like Reacher.

I remember when someone brought up the fact that Tom Cruise is a foot shorter, and is built nothing like Reacher in an interview with Lee Child, Child went on about how Reacher's size was a metaphor, and other pure bullshiat.

I lost a lot of respect for Child. But then I read the most recent book, and it was his best in years, so I have forgiven him a bit.

/Reacher is actually at his best when he is still in the Military.

I love the Reacher books, and while I am disappointed Tom Cruise will be playing him, from what I hear he is the main reason the movie is happening in the first place. So, I'll take it. Could still be a good movie, albeit with a very different main character.

I'm of the same mind, I buy every Child book the day it comes out and re-read them every couple years.Having said that, I'm fairly certain this movie could've gotten greenlit with someone else as JR. Liam Neesom (as someone else mentioned), Howie Long (don't laugh, he'd kick ass), Trace Adkins (again, don't laugh...he was in Trump's apprentice show and has 'sorta' acted in music videos). Hell, I'd even be happier with Dolph Lundgren than 5 FOOT SEVEN INCH TOM CRUISE.

I can't think of any suitable 6'3-6'6'' actors off the top of my head, but I know they're out there.

Tom Cruise as Reacher?! He's what, 5'7"-5'8"? He's a pretty good action-type star, but I REALLY don't see him as Reacher.

Producers clearly going for the bankable star instead of the best man for the part. Hard to blame them, but....

Clancy Brown is 6'4"

as is Abe Vigoda

That's what people aren't getting. If Cruise is involved with this thing at all then it's going to be a big budget action flick. That means an "above the title" star has to be in it. Actual physical attributes can be fixed in post.

Child is awful. I don't see. How he even. Got a contract. He writes like a 10 year old.

I couldn't make it past the first 100 pages of the first Reacher book because it was utterly painful to read.

I'm surprised they didn't try and option Reacher for a cable series considering the books are structured exactly like "The Fugitive" or "The Incredible Hulk". I'm a little disappointed Childs didn't rein himself in a little bit, I would of rather had 5 or 6 strong Reacher novels spaced a couple years apart than 16? 17? weaker books in 15 years. Even the strongest writers of serial characters struggle after 10 books or so although sometimes just mixing in some new series can help, a la Robert B. Parker. Granted, Sunny Randall was no good, but the westerns were awesome.

Thomas Jane is around that age group and looked okay in The Punisher.

Right character, but much better actor, both in Punisher and would have been as Jack Reacher:
