Great headlne. It's just too bad that they are going to let a DB like Tom Cruise screw up a good book.

They're going to need a crapload of CGI to make him look even remotely like Reacher.

That's almost as great a title as "John Carter!"

I remember when someone brought up the fact that Tom Cruise is a foot shorter, and is built nothing like Reacher in an interview with Lee Child, Child went on about how Reacher's size was a metaphor, and other pure bullshiat.

I lost a lot of respect for Child. But then I read the most recent book, and it was his best in years, so I have forgiven him a bit.

/Reacher is actually at his best when he is still in the Military.

I love the Reacher books, and while I am disappointed Tom Cruise will be playing him, from what I hear he is the main reason the movie is happening in the first place. So, I'll take it. Could still be a good movie, albeit with a very different main character.

My thoughts exactly.

I do love the Reacher book series. The plots are usually pretty outlandish; however, it's always a fun, easy read.

Reacher is over 6 ft tall, I think around 6'3" or 6'4". How is Cruise going to make up a foot of height?

What actor Reacher/Cruise's age who could pull off the role is that tall? The only one even remotely in the ballpark that I can think of is David Morse, but he's not an excellent actor. Adam Baldwin?

Thomas Jane is around that age group and looked okay in The Punisher.

I think Dolph Lundgren would be perfect without the accent... but I don't think that's something he's capable of.

It's not just the height. The guy has to have a very particular build and carry himself in a way that says, "I don't want to start shiat but I know if it comes down to it, I'm the one walking away."

But quite honestly I don't know that they're wrong to pick someone who doesn't fit the bill. Reacher's personality works fine for a book, but I don't know that it would translate well to the screen even if (or especially if) they found an actor who was exactly like him in every way.

2012-05-31 03:06:01 PM

JacksonBryan: Thomas Jane

He's only 5'11" according to IMDB, but you're right. The presence he was able to pull off in The Punisher is exactly what I was trying to describe.

I did start at the beginning because I thought I needed too but it doesn't make too much of a difference. Child doesn't make much of a reference in the books to previous books; more to a previous time in Reacher's career/life.

You'll be fine starting with Without Fail, it's a good one.

The Enemy would be a perfect book to make into a movie right now I think. A military on the brink of major cutbacks as the enemy of the past years is crumbling, and people are wising up to the fact that a large military is not needed, gay soldier.

It would work with the political climate now, and a bit of Cold War nostalgia.

DVDave: Re-reading The Enemy right now.

I'm on that one right now. When Cruise was here in town filming One Shot/Jack Reacher, I figured I should check it out...since I'm the type that needs to start at the beginning of a series, it's been a while getting to the one I was actually interested in.

Child has a lot of short-comings as a writer, and many of the books in the series have been way too out there or had total crap endings...but damned if they aren't fun and keep me entertained.

\Great headline, subby.

I've been thinking of that a lot while reading this book, too. Very different attitude toward the issue of gays in the military 20 years ago. Represented in the book by the old Pentagon guy, Willard. Pissed me off to no end. Reminded me of the old Navy guy on the first season of Survivor - Rudy? - and his attitude toward Richard Hatch's lifestyle.

You all do know that books and film are different media, right? If Jaws was faithful to the book it would have sucked. I don't know who this Reacharound character is and I'm guessing a lot of others don't either so it's probably going to wind up like Lord of the Rings and Interview with the Vampire, most people digging it and people who want to lord their literacy over others hating it for its lack of authenticity.

I'm not concerned they get every detail right as the movie wouldn't portray well in that sense, but the main character looking/acting nothing like the main character of the book is what we are discussing. It would be like casting Flipper for the role of Jaws instead of a muthafarking shark.

"lord their literacy" - that's a new one

The problem with Child is that he must get paid by the word.

Well, there's always Puddy from Seinfeld. For some reason I picture someone looking like him when I read the book.

That's a good point. I spent all this time biatching about Tom Cruise as Reacher, but I haven't given any thought to who might be a good pick.

Jason Statham?
Chris Hemsworth?
Ryan Reynolds seems to be a hot item as of late.
Hell, even Daniel Craig.

Jane is cool. I like the Dolph Lundgren idea too. I'd also vote for Gerard Butler*. Or Jason Statham*. Or Scott Adkins.

*Don't know if their accents would work or if they'd need to lose them.

(Or if he was younger) Tommy Lee Jones.
