Awwww... you mean the lying liars and their lies about "Corn Sugar" being the same as real sugar didn't succeed in their bid to bullshiat the public?

I feel so bad for them.

Ah, yes, HFCS - the Blackwater of sugars. Never mind the fact that we already have something called "corn sugar," the HFCS folks will just have to live with the fact that they can't weasel out of their bad reputation by changing the brand name.

FTA: The Corn Refiners Association issued a statement Wednesday noting that the FDA denied its petition on "narrow, technical" grounds.

The FDA denied your petition because you're a liquid, not a crystallized solid. Imagine saying that about other things...

"Yes, sir, I understand I actually hold a bottle of sea water, but as it does contain sea salt, just with water in it, I'd like to call it 'sea salt.' No? C'mon, it's just a technicality, really..."

"Yes, sir, I understand I actually hold a crucible of magma, but as it's really just liquid rock, I'd like to call it 'soft rock.' No? C'mon, it's just a technicality, really..."

Besides the bullshiat behind the naming of the ingredient, why can't I find real soda with real sugar?

Dan Callister, a lawyer for the Sugar Association, said the FDA's decision confirms his group's position that sugar and high fructose corn syrup are two distinct products.

"What's going on here is basically a con game to suggest otherwise," Callister said. "What do con men do? They normally try to change their name. The FDA has thankfully stopped that."

Oh, why did you have to go run your mouth? Whatever rash of lawsuits you planned on unleashing on the public you just ruined by showing your cards.

Corn syrup was cheaper in the 80s, so everyone switched over. Now, corn is subsidized by the government, so that's what is used.

I guess I am like you. I find a glass of cold water so much more refreshing and tastier than a soda. I probably drink 3 or 5 cokes a year. If I drank soda instead of water like some people do I would be 100lbs fatter.

A while back there was a link on fark where they went around testing Mexican sodas for corn syrup. Guess what, most of it was sweetened with HFCS. The Mexican government allows bottlers to call HFCS sugar.

Logical.

Personally, I would have worded it something like "Or, you could drink a glass of farking water".

FTFA: the Corn Refiners Association has also been running a marketing campaign to explain that its syrup is actually a form of sugar and has the same nutritional value as the familiar white, granular table sugar that consumers are familiar with. That in turn prompted a lawsuit from the Sugar Association last year claiming that the campaign is misleading.

I just drank a glass of orange juice and it was yummy but I had to chase it with some awesome water. I don't know if we were actually too poor to afford soda or if my parents were just that awesome to make it a rare treat and get us hooked on water. Possibly both. It even sticks with fast food. "NO, JUST THE BURGER, IF I WANTED THE MEAL I WOULD HAVE SAID SO" I wouldn't mind the fries but I don't want that carbonated pre-piss.

Alright, I think I get it. We subsidize billions to the corn lobby to lobby the FDA to let them lie. Fortunately they are opposed by the sugar lobby with the billions we subsidize them with. As a result, our billions to both lobbies cancel out and their lobbying basically lobs a log by cancelling out and the FDA does exactly what it would have done if it was funded with $23.50 of common sense.

How do you get the water inside of the toast? Wouldn't it get soggy?
That kind of eliminates the purpose of toasting it, doesn't it?

I drink diet coke or water. Regular soda is like candy to me--I don't know how people drink it with something.

Lorina soda is a nice treat, though. French, I think? And I'm fairly certain it has real sugar.

It's the glass bottles. Regular soda with corn syrup in glass bottles tastes better.

Yet would you believe that aside from Jones "You pay up the ass for it" Soda, there's no manufactuers of soda beverages on the West Coast who will do custom labels and use glass soda bottles?

Shipping from the East and Midwest put it out of my budget, and I found an awesome place out in New England...

You know i've had all the throwback sodas, mexican coke, etc. The only ones i prefer to the regular ones are throwback Mountain Dew and Glass bottle Pepsi. I really do believe that the glass bottles in the Mexican Pepsi make the difference (it might just be nostalgia though) But for the throwback Mountain Dew i really do notice a difference in taste. It seems to be a little less sweet with more citrus flavor. Besides that it really doesn't matter to me. I also could care less what they call it. Sugar/syrup it is still just empty calories.

Your body doesn't process glucose and fructose the same way. Fructose has to be converted into glucose to be useful to the body, and thus neither the sugar at 50% or the HFCS at 55% are particularly good for ya.

But I've been poking around and maybe fat is the product of a state of mind, not the other way around.

I've got nothing against corn... I love corn... but we've got to stop trying to make it be sugar, gasoline, and everything else under the sun simply because they want more subsidies to grossly overproduce stuff that just isn't all that great at being anything other than corn.

Call it corn puss or maize glaze, it doesn't matter the cows that are my fellow Americans will eat that slop up.

Thing is people don't care. I have no health insurance and a family history of health problems so I do care. I figure eventually caffeine and corn syrup and these other food byproducts will be looked at like tobacco but not until long term effects really start to build up in 30 to 40 years.

farkityfarker: I still haven't heard a valid reason why there's anything wrong with HFCS as compared to cane sugar. Just lots of bullshiat.

It's not technically about HFCS specifically, but about the politics behind it.

In 1985, a group of Agricultural lobbyists got together to pass the Farm Bill which gave huge subsidies for things like soybeans, wheat and of course corn.

The result of these policies you see on display in the supermarket today where the real price of fruits and vegetables between 1985 and 2000 increased by nearly 40 percent while the real price of soft drinks (aka liquid corn) declined by 23 percent. The reason the least healthful calories in the supermarket are the cheapest is that those are the ones the Farm Bill encourages farmers to grow.

Fruit and vegetables are now prohibitively expensive, forcing most families to eat cheaper and less healthier. It is now more cost-efficient to eat pizza, chips and coca-cola every night than it is to have a decent salad. Combine that with the declining purchasing power of the average consumer and you have a health crisis on your hands.

HFCS is sweeter and cheaper than cane sugar, and has been linked as one of the primary components of the obesity and diabetes epidemic. It is in a lot of stuff you eat, but there are regulations preventing it from being put in everything. The corn lobby figures they can get around these regulations by re-categorizing it, and the FDA has told them no.

Corn isn't bad. There's nothing inherently bad about any food. But we are omnivorous animals and we require a balanced diet, and all the heavy subsidies given to corn, wheat and soybeans has been poisoning us slowly over the course of a generation. When you go to McDonalds, you're basically eating corn: fries/nuggets (deep fried in corn oil), burger (corn-fed beef), shake (HFCS).

This has got to stop.
