valkore: BigBooper: In D.C. they outlawed 40 oz cans of beer and malt liquor. So of course the retailers just started selling 2 packs of 24 oz beer.

Never seen a 40 ounce can of beer. That must be even bigger than the large Foster's cans.

I'm from Ohio, live in NY. When I go see my family and ask for a soda it's high comedy for them.

Soda is plain seltzer water to them.

Does anyone know what the hell happened to this law?

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/24/business/24menu.html

Buried deep in the health care legislation that President Obama signed on Tuesday is a new requirement that will affect any American who walks into a McDonald's, Starbucks or Burger King. Every big restaurant chain in the nation will now be required to put calorie information on their menus and drive-through signs.

In other words, as soon as 2011 it will be impossible to chomp down on a Big Mac without knowing that it contains over 500 calories, more than a quarter of the Agriculture Department's 2,000-calorie daily guideline.

I haven't seen this with any regularity. A couple restaurants (Panera, Au Bon Pain, Noodles & Co) have listed it voluntarily on their menus. McDonald's has calorie info on the bottom of items, after you buy them.

ansius: Man, so many people here who like paying high health insurance premiums:

1. It's my choice if I want to consume 1 gallon of super sweetened soda whenever and wherever I want!
2. Why won't the government do something to curb the high price of health insurance and health care?

So you believe the government shouldn't have mandated coverage for preexisting conditions even when the person gave themselves the condition from their own shiat habits. Too bad, you already voted the wrong way stupid.

All the fast food places around here (downstate NY) post the calorie count. I wasn't too surprised to find out my go-to meal at BK was the fattiest of all.

Then you will pay 1/3 more for the same amount of sugar water. Its a win win!

This is what will happen. When I visited Japan in 2003 the largest size soda in the vending machine was 8oz. I bought 3. One 8oz coke i finished while i put the change in the machine to purchase the second and third 8oz cokes. I still got my desired 24oz. I definitely paid more money than if i had just purchased one 24oz beverage.

gravebayne2: hasty ambush: Virtuoso80: 1. I rarely drink soda.
2. I think mass soda consumption is one of the least healthy parts of the American diet (and that's saying something).
3. This law is retarded.

Except some Americans, want government to pay for things like their health care. If we, the tax payers are going to be forced into that position we have a right to take measures to control costs . That means controlling things that may impact their health.

Since we face legal issues if we just try to regulated what the fat and obese consume (cannot discriminate against the fat and obese) we have to take the elementary school approach and punish the whole class for the actions of a few.
In this case it means a perfectly healthy person with 8% body fat cannot get a large coke in NYC just the same as a beach ball with lips cannot.

If you do not want government control do not accept /demand government money because you do not get one without the other.

Health Care Reform (Obamacare) is not about providing health care, it is about obtaining power.

well someone had to bring stupid to this thread.

first, this seems ridiculous. not just them trying to ban large sodas, but your entire response as well.

secondly instead of just health reasons, i see it also as a ploy to sell more drinks. instead of a 2 liter of soda, one would only be able to get a 16oz leaving them wanting more. they may be swayed to buy more. people will always find a way to get the things they want, especially if they have money.

i see better ways to approach this issue. including a complete overhaul of the food stamp program, as well as better access to gyms (such as free membership for overweight individuals). there are plenty of other options. but i doubt they will explore any of them. politics has a way of standing in the way of progress.

Now who brought stupid to the thread. The same people you cannot get to control their diet and exercise habits for their own good you are now going to get them to do it with free stuff? Well by free you mean for them as somebody else will be paying for it obviously.

At my place of employment we have a free on site well equipped fitness center and the company will reimburse up to $275 a year the cost of a private fitness center membership if you do not want to use the on site facilities. Yet you see very very few of the fat and obese employees, and we have more than our share, taking advantage of it. They are the same ones who wait in line to take the elevator to the second floor instead of using the stairs. The majority of people you see at the fitness center are the ones who are in good shape. The ones who have the self discipline and sense of self responsibility to take care of themselves.

It is just like with smokers . Smokers have to pay more for our company's health plan, a plan that covers smoking cessation and other chemical dependency treatments, yet you still see a lot of smokers outside during breaks and lunch at the designated smoking areas.

I do agree that what they can buy with food stamps also needs to be reformed but that only covers the fat who on food stamps.

kingoomieiii: cman: Für die Volk

As opposed to government-subsidized corn being sold back to us as pure sugar, pennies on the dollar? How about corn subsidies stop, then we'll see if sugar water is still sold at $1.25 a gallon in every single store in the US.

I'm with you on this. Stop corn subsidies. It's not the best crop to grow, either, because it's hard on soil. Plus, stopping subsidized corn syrup has to be a lot easier than allowing a different set of cup sizes for diet as opposed to regular soda. How are they going to enforce that? Will a cop perform random taste tests to make sure the giant cup is filled with diet, not regular? Will there be sugar-sniffing dogs? And, if the issue is heath, why would you reward people who consume large quantities of artificial sweetener?

This is another TSA legislation.

Something to make it seem like the government is taking a threat verra seriously, knowing that it will have zero effect on the actual problem, but it will line the pockets of their big contributors.

Theater.

This will have NO effect on obesity, or even consumption, of the banned drinks. People will simply pay more to get what they want. Concern trolls notwithstanding.

How people can be okay with, and even supportive of, practices like this is beyond me.

Want to help? Make food stamps have similar restrictions as WIC, for a start.

Real world problems. Nanny state solutions.

The government should just ban everything but fresh fruits and vegetables, then we can all skip through our garden utopia, healthy and happy. While they're at it, they should ban cigarettes, alcohol, and porn to keep our minds and bodies healthy and clean.

Thank you so much for protecting us from our own free will, Mayor Farkstick.

ShawnDoc: ceebeecates4: Well what if i order two beverages?

That's exactly how retailers will get around this.

That won't be effective. Retailers have been able to upsize their drinks because the incremental cost of a little more ice, carbonated water and syrup could allow them to give consumers 1/3 more for maybe a 10% price difference. That's a huge selling point. Paper cups, plastic covers and straws cost money. Carrying trays and larger bags to hold that extra drink costs money too. Locking up your cash flow in all that stuff and needing extra storage space cost money. There's no way retailers are going to be able to offer the same deal if they have to sell two beverages.

advres: BUT, people should have the right to be as unhealthy as they like. Seriously though, stop ingesting sugar by the ton people.

I'm torn. On the one hand, yes, people shouldn't be told by the gov't what not to eat.

But on the other hand, if a person actually believes that drinking a huge tub of cola 3 or 4 times a week isn't going to SERIOUSLY impact their general health, then maybe they're not exactly thinking these things through and it's in the government's best interest long term to say "Hey, wtf man, that's eventually gonna kill you."

They do it with warnings on smokes, because they can't ban em due to the tobacco lobby. Maybe the Soda/High-Fructose-Corn-Syrup lobby needs to grease some palms in New York.

/maybe warning pics of fat people on Big Gulps :)
