Any nurse could have told you that. I worked in an ER and we had a phone we could take to a patient's bedside. It smelled like and old man's head. If you asked anyone what it smelled like they would smell it and look perplexed, if you then said 'old man's head' they would say "Exactly!"

What does it smell like?

Depends.

Don't listen to him, sir. You've got an enchanting musk.

So, just like food the fridge, when they start smelling, it's time to throw them out!

2012-05-31 02:59:13 AM
Yeah...anecdotal evidence these past 40 years has shown that as well for both humans and animals.

I notice my dog (9 months) will play differently with other dogs depending on their age. It's kinda cool to watch it in action.

Maybe there are pheromones that indicate someone is of breeding age and we can detect their absence?

2012-05-31 03:04:45 AM
I find that the older I get, the more attracted I am to women my own age.

I suppose I've always been attracted to women my age, but the age of attractiveness seems to move upwards as I get older.

It doesn't mean that I wouldn't fark the brains out of an 18 year old, just that I find my head turning looking at what you kids would call MILFs rather than the kids of MILFs.

Boy, I can't wait until I inevitably age and acquire old person funk myself.

It's the smell of death creeping up on them.

I don't want to smell funky, but I damn sure plan on taking advantage of the "old man card". I'm gonna stare at young girls, make inappropriate comments, fart when and where I please, drive slowly in the fast lane, and generally anything I damn well please that won't get me thrown in jail. And WOE to any snotty shiat who dares touch a blade of grass on MY LAWN!!!

Why in the hell would you wait until you're old and ready for the bin? Do all that shiat NOW, man. I do. Except the driving part, cause I hate driving, and usually get driven.

The elderly produce more of a certain protein. This is what people are smelling.

humans have stinks from birth to death for multiple purposes. these well documented facts of old merely serve well as It Ain't News, It's Fark. and i love it. i'm heading out early this AM in the Romerocopter, reporting live.

a lot of those old people aromas are products they use. mom is in a center right now. i'd rather be cockpunched than visit her there, i hate it that much. and it's a Nice place, not a dump. hate it. dozens of identical shrunken grey women in wheelchairs, most unable to do for themselves. tears here. the USA is way behind on 'death with dignity'.

When I was a kid, I had an old English teacher, who looked and acted like Sir Cedric Hardwicke in that old Twilight Zone episode, "Uncle Simon." He smelled strongly like rotting mushrooms.

Old people also get tired, and lazy, and indifferent, and start to neglect personal hygene. Old folks who can still excercise and bathe daily don't smell funny.
At least not that I can detect.

From, like, the actual study:

"Old-age group were rated as less intense and less unpleasant than body odors originating from Young and Middle-age donors."

So it's not that smell more, it's that they smell less that makes it possible to identify them.

Yep. My mother-in-law had her hair done every couple of weeks.

It wasn't washed in between, and I suspect she didn't wash herself anywhere else, either.

Gross.

"But humans have a much weaker olfactory system than animals do"

I'm not sure I believe this. I think it may just be that our sense of smell is evolutionarily specialized to humans. If you've ever met someone who didn't bath, you can smell them from a block away. Now what all these chemical pheromones can tell me about this person, I have no idea, as today most people don't run around filthy, but if they did like our less than civilized ancestors, I'm sure there are lots of things that we could learn about people from how they stunk in the same way dogs can apparently learn about other dogs from the smell of their butt.

That's just my hypothesis, 'cause it seems like I have a pretty good sense of smell when people aren't masking or removing their own odor.

You're still wrong. He looked like BIlly Mumy in the episode "It's a Good Life," but he smelled like Burgess Meredith in "Time Enough at Last."

From the original article in Scientific American -

Contrary to the popular notion that old person smell is disagreeable, volunteers in the new study rated the odors of the elderly as much less unpleasant and intense than those of the middle-aged and young.

I took a geriatric studies course once and one of our field trips was to a place where we had to complete a series of tasks wearing a suit like this.

Including being barely able to see or hear anything, they taped my fingers together on one hand, filled my shoes with popcorn kernals, put weights on my arms and legs, and gave me a walker to push.

My tasks included pouring a glass of water, making a sandwich, folding laundry, and writing a letter. I was hardly able to see, so I couldn't even FIND the laundry, and when I finally tripped over it, I found myself unable to actually get anything folded properly.

When I finally found a pen and paper, the letter I wrote was as follows: "THIS FARKING SUCKS."

All the moth balls, pine air freshener/deodorant and newspapers drenched in poodle piss saved me from those terrible smells.

So if you can't smell their funk, then they must have bathed, ergo you can always smell funky people. Hmm...

Speaking as an older person (76), we are also more likely to be poor, ill, homeless, on various medications that affect body odor. The subjects in the study were all in good health.

The way the results are turned around in the headlines reveals a prejudice against old people that is based on social conditions, not any innate physical characteristic of the old. It's the usual hidden propaganda message: nothing can be done about your problem because you're a genetic loser. Therefore we have no obligation to help you.

This syndrome isn't just about the old. It's about everything. It's about denying our responsibilities toward each other and the awesome human ability to improve and evolve. It's the primary justification of racism.

Because younger people have been told to worship and sacrifice to and obey their living ancestors for so long, they're freaking sick of it.

But to be fair, living a long time was more rare and more difficult in times past. Odds are if someone was 70 years old then they probably knew some cool shiat and deserved to be respected. Now a days tho, modern science can keep any damn fool alive.

Is it like old house smell.
Friends of mine live in a house built in the 1930s.
My clothes reek of that place when I leave.
