Everybody wanna' be a geek but don't nobody wanna' be a geek

Patton Oswalt had a good rant about how before the internet it actually took hard work and dedication to be a geek. To hear geeks complain about their "turf" being invaded is pretty funny since it was only theirs because nobody else wanted it. Now that geekdom is actually (and inexplicably) worth cool points it gets taken away from them by the cool kids.

It's as funny as it is unfair.

Wittenberg Dropout: The influx of girls to my local gaming convention was a plus so I can't really complain too much. They also tend to like games that are game that I like too like RPG's and antimath-hammer boardgames like BSG. So I gotta say, I love all the new eye candy.

Now if you walk into the room where they keep all the TCG players and you might just fall over from the stink of unwashed ass. Yeah, that part of geekdom never changed.

This has happened with anime fandom as well, though, unfortunately, most of them are high schoolers.

Sci-fi fandom seems to have gotten a resurgence in female fans as well (there were a ton in the 60s and 70s, but the 80s and 90s saw a wane), but, again unfortunately, many of them seem to be Steampunkers.

on the not so odd side, i also have my tiki-god that has graced every desk since it was left on one of my desks at a previous job where every person that got rid of it got canned within two months, a small stuffed monkey which possesses a fully functional entry badge for the building of a former employer two small raiders helmets, and a balalaika.

Because People in power are Stupid: (Akira is essentially about a monster that destroys Tokyo, derivative of what other, older work of fiction?)

That's a pretty disingenuous description IMHO. It would be far more accurate to describe it as more about an experiment gone wrong that went out of control. It's closer to the movie version of Frankenstein or maybe even The Incredible Hulk than Godzilla which you seem to be suggesting.

You lose points for not referring to it as a 15" GoLion (or Go-Lion, either is acceptable). Sorry, turn in your geek license at the nearest comic book shop or gaming store.

Technically Anime fans, as they take up more room at cons and often whack people in the head with oversized weapons made of cardboard and tin-foil. Also, the hot chicks all inexplicably flock to anime crap.

Also, though I consider myself a brony, I understand it's a fad and will pass in time (much like Pokemon...used to be you couldn't swing a dead pikachu without hitting some dumbass wanting to trade cards at cons...now they are mostly extinct). Anime is a genre and is much, much harder to stamp out. Worse, there is some good anime, which the anime fans will often hate while simultaneously cosplaying as the main character...leading to head explosions of regular geeks.

Uchiha_Cycliste: TheBeastOfYuccaFlats: Nexzus: Quick, semi-serious question: what happens if you call anime "japanimation" in front of an anime fan?

These days I think we just look at you kinda funny, like you're an idiot (or worse, a racist for putting "Jap" in front of "animation"). That term hasn't been used by a distributor or retailer since the 90s, and so the median aged anime fan has never actually seen it in real life, I bet.

Uchiha_Cycliste: Sub! It's like not even a question, especially after you are familiar with the voices. AFAIK only Samuraii Shamploo did good dubs.

Bebop and Trigun were mostly good dubs.

Trigun is good too? Cool. Thanks for the info.
Also, Did you catch the Trigun movie that came out about, oh, 2 years ago?

I have not. I remember it now that you mention it, and I heard that it was good, but it passed out of my head at some point and now I'll have to go see if I can find it.

While I don't disagree, it's one of those arguments that never ends well. I'd rather people watch how they like (and heck I watched dubs for a good four years before I made my way to subs - without em I wouldn't be a fan). What annoys me are some of the JRPGs being released with terrible localizations(Arc Rise) and no original audio option.

Carn: imprimere: Am I the only one who made it about 4 paragraphs in before losing interest in finding out whatever point the author was eventually gonna get to?

Nope. I trailed off in the middle, too.

Same here. Whiny hipster is whiny.

lousyskater: Uchiha_Cycliste: Yuri Futanari: Uchiha_Cycliste: Dr. Whoof: Uchiha_Cycliste: TheBeastOfYuccaFlats: Wittenberg Dropout: The influx of girls to my local gaming convention was a plus so I can't really complain too much.

God damn anime fans...

Now now, as long as they stay in their video room at the cons, and so long as no more than 10% of the dealer room is taken up with cheap stuffed anime shiat, they aren't so bad. Just take the cosplay of some character no one in this hemisphere has ever heard away and they would be perfectly acceptable.

They're like the little "special needs" brother that your mom says has to tag along with you even though all your friends roll their eyes, but in the end you learn that they are special in more ways that their disability. Next on a very special episode of Blossom.

That seems about right.
Now I have a question.
Anime fans vs. Bronies. Who more worser?

Bronies tend to be a little more whimsical, they don't respond angrily to trolling or criticism, they just post pictures of ponies or that CS Lewis quote. Anime fans will break keyboards responding to you.

/sub vs dub!

I've found that they are relatively few and far between, also... since I generally dl on the japan schedule and not the American one I'm loathe to double the number of files I have, and get used to new voices. Besides, since I can't hear (65db loss, bi-lateral) so I need subs either way.

You're right... it is an individual preference. Though, as I mentioned above, I *need* the subs either way, so I might as well stick with the early releases.

The anime dubbing industry is a no-budget system most of the time (i.e. when Disney isn't involved with a Ghibli release). There's some good voice actors in it from time to time, but sometimes it's literally the receptionist jumping in to do a voice.
