The Flame virus is supposedly 20 MB in size.

Only American programmers could possibly come up with that much software bloat.

It would make sense that instead of writing code for a single virus with this complexity -that one might write a special compiler for these types of viruses.

Wasn't Stuxnet actually traced back to Russia? Of course, the Russians are supplying the nukes, so it's not like Iran can accuse them without seeing their chance of getting nukes vanish, even if Putin himself started bragging about it.

Size is relative. 20MB is not big for media files, but for code it's absolutely massive.

Consider Firefox. This is a piece of software that is generally considered bloatware, and perhaps rightly so. It includes everything that you'd need to make something like Flame: a full runtime that gives you encryption, networking, access to system services, and so on. It also includes a bunch of stuff that no malware would ever use: frameworks for making interfaces, displaying images, building small databases, an entire freaking programming language to bind it all together, and lots of other odds and ends. Despite all that, it comes in at only 15MB: considerably less size, yet it does more than Flame would ever need.

And even Firefox is bloated. What, then, is Flame? Where is all that code even going?

Russia and China are only on Iran's side to the extent Iran buys military hardware and nuclear technology from them. They're not BFFs or anything. If the bombs start flying, the Russians will sell bombs to Iran to throw but they won't throw any themselves.

They'd probably be happy to take over the glass parking lot that was Iran in order to have a warm-water port though.

Well, they may just be right. We are developing tools for "cyber-warfare" and we've targeted Iran before. I hate that we are dong this (actually deploying instead of researching). We aren't the only nation with whiz-bang software engineers. It's only a matter of time before someone retaliates.

Bloat? I think not. Considering it's 20 MB and Kaspersky couldnt even detect it for 2 years and has modules which can completely erase its presence on the host system. What is it? Hell I'd say that's classified. Seems like 20 MB well spent.

This about this.....
Much like Kelly Johnson and the Skunkworks...the SR-71 was in development and operational for decades before it was public.....

"Flame" has been estimated to be out for at least 5 years until it was recently discovered......

Can you imagine what other kind of crap is being developed or has been deployed in the meantime?!?!?!?!?

Sooo... actually Flame does have those those. It includes both sqllite and the Lua interpreter. Displaying images, no, but capturing (and thus writing out) images, yes. (Though obviously you only need to deal with one format.) It can also capture your microphone, so presumably there's some MP3 or OGG encoder in there.

I'd see China doing it less than Russia. China needs the United States, and by proxy, it's allies' good will for their continued prosperity.

Russia, on the other hand, would probably treat them the same way they treated North Vietnam during the war. A great place to have deniable, Russian personnel and assets test their latest hardware on the battlefield.

Seriously can you imagine the flap that would erupt if Iran did any of the stuff our politicians do on a daily basis ?

We have the plans to attack Iran and they are ready
cyber Warfare attacking what the US calls a non-military enrichment program
Iranian scientists being murdered
high powered US officials illegally shilling for Iranian terrorist organizations (MEK)
Drones circling their country
bases completely surrounding their country

And the media and us admin want us to think they are the aggressors ?

For a virus/worm it's honking huge. "That's not a moon, that's a space station" kind of huge.

Without the huge GUI and bloated applications, you can easily fit an entire OS into 20 MB.

Of course, if Iran doesn't want Flame, and doesn't want delivery of Smoke, Rubble and Explosion, they could always try uninstalling Nuclear.

American programmers still exist? By G-d, you're an endangered species!

But no, get some code outsourced from China or India, and THEN you'll see bloat. No comments either, just...really, really bad coding. Spend more fixing the outsourced code than it would have cost to just write it correctly in the first place. Yay outsourcing!

kindms: We have the plans to attack Iran and they are ready

Which is an absurd conclusion to make. We have plans for nuclear warfare in China. We also have plans to invade Canada, and they are ready too. For some reason, I doubt we'll be invading their poutine reserves any time soon. Tim Hortons is safe from Uncle Sam marching in and demanding a double double anytime soon.

Just because we have plans for something, doesn't mean it's going to happen, or even planned to happen. There are people who set in a basement in Cheyenne, Wyoming, who do nothing but formulate these plans day in and day out.

kindms: bases completely surrounding their country

Which is actually inaccurate. The oft-circulated "OMG WE SURROUND THEM" Picture that people like to link on FARK includes numerous sites which are actually contracted refueling or logistical staging points that have been lapsed or are unused, and several forward bases and operating stations which have not been used since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

kindms: Drones circling their country

We also have satellites orbiting China which can take pictures to show you the razor burn on some farmer's face. Clearly that means we're getting ready to invade. For oil. Or brown people. I forgot what the evil justification of the week was.

kindms: Iranian scientists being murdered

[Citation Needed that the Special Activities Division is snuffing Iranian Scientists]

kindms: cyber Warfare attacking what the US calls a non-military enrichment program

[Citation Needed that the United States is using cyberwarfare on anyone.] [Citation Needed that their enrichment program is "non-military" in it's entirety] - This is actually pretty likely, but I'd challenge you to provide evidence of it.
