Hydra: Shostie: Have we considered the possibility that Zuckerberg doesn't speak or read Italian?

Doesn't matter. He's rich; therefore, he's hated and evil by most of Fark.

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: powhound: Don't most other developed countries use chips in their cards now?

That's what I was thinking. The US is waaaaay behind other countries when it comes to this technology.

It is a stupid technology. You need less than $100 bucks worth of equipment to build a simple device that reads every card, on every person you walk past. No need to steal, skim, or pickpocket. You can simply walk past someone and get their numbers. Mythbusters was going to do a show about that fact, but multiple companies (American Express, Visa, Discover... etc.) had their lawyers have a nasty talk with the Mythbusters crew about it....

What a stupid story. He's not Mitt Romney. The dude wasn't born a billionaire. I'm fairly certain he's used an ATM before he came up with stole the idea for Facebook.

RFID is a great technology. It is also an inherently insecure technology that shouldn't be used in conjunction with anything that should be secure, like credit cards.

Copper wires, magnetic stripes and radio waves are also inherently insecure...this is why you take steps to secure the information...

Having just passed through Italy a couple of weeks ago and finding not a single damn automated machine that worked(ATMs, ticket machines at the train station, vending machines), I am not in the least bit surprised. That whole country is like a half step up from Mexico on the shiathole scale.

Slaxl: 2 within 10ft of each other, identical looking, one worked for me one didn't

Stuff like that is very common in Japan. One is connected to the Japanese banking network, the other to an international network like Swift or something. If you're lucky, the international one is labeled in something you can read. Same with the Japanese cell phone networks - it's a completely separate network and set of standards from the rest of the world.

That being said, I've never met more helpful people than in Japan. Once when trying to find an ATM, a woman who didn't speak enough English to explain to me how to get to it, closed up her shop and walked me there.

Never had a problem getting ATMs to work in Europe, surprisingly. Then again, my bank (USAA) caters specifically to people who are often overseas, so that might have something to do with it.

Perhaps he neglected to tell his bank he was traveling abroad, so they denied his card on the assumption it was fraudulent.

One was real, the other probably had a card skimmer on it.

Tomorrow's headline: "Zuckerberg's bank account drained by Italian ATM skimmer"

ATM's never work abroad. When I was in America there was only one ATM in San Francisco I found that would give me money, whenever I go to France or Spain it's 50/50 whether they'll work, when I went to Romania there were 2 within 10ft of each other, identical looking, one worked for me one didn't. I don't know why, I just assume it's a card/bank thing... or I'm exceedingly unlucky.
