Yay new connectors to buy!

It's a different size. And will be LTE.

Those seem like two pretty large differences.

Well lucky for us one is actually included when you buy one.

The iPhone 5 is going to be useless because the only network with widespread LTE, Verizon, won't allow you to upgrade and keep your unlimited data.

So either you shell out full retail, or the device will be handicapped with a limited data plan.

1. Keep releasing the same crap over and over and over again.
2. Give it a new name

Is that true for all LTE phones?

If it were actually the same, wouldn't people be complaining about it not having a bigger screen and not having LTE?

Faster processors, more memory, added features, batter cameras, etc. Yup, same crap.

Best part is everyone is doing it, Apple, Droid makers, all of 'em.

Bigger screen, 4G, smaller charging dock, bigger speakers, better camera, internals to match new iPad, shipping with the next iOS operating system. The same?

Who the fark cares what it looks like? Smartphones are all about the specs and features.

Yup, the window is closing on being able to upgrade and get a discounted phone and also keep your unlimited data. Sometime this summer Verizon will announce a cut-off date.

Had an iPhone 4, switched to Galaxy S2 about a year ago. So much happier with the larger screen, and faster overall performance.
iPhone has some redeeming qualities; it's just a matter of preference.

Yeah, even if you currently have an unlimited data plan, the instant you upgrade they're forcing people to go to a tiered data plan.

so, either don't upgrade your phone and keep unlimited data until the phone dies or they stop supporting it, or lose your unlimited data.

/or go to sprint

The S2 has been so good to me, I think I may buy the S3 when it comes out in the U.S. for the upgraded goodies.

Switched from an iPhone 4 to the HTC One X about two weeks ago at the recommendation of a bunch of Farkers. Freaking awesome phone.

I am an Android guys myself but I'd be lying if I said I didn't like the iPhone. Yeah, it is very restrictive and all, but the selection of awesome accessories has made me want to jump ship once or twice. Maybe if Android phones introduced a universal port for peripherals and accessories (other than cases) didn't have to be device-specific they could have something truly amazing.

My contract is up soon and I might change carrier. Anybody have any input on carriers in the Bay Area?

Maybe I'm not understanding what you're saying, but I'm with AT&T and switched from an iPhone 4 to an HTC One X about two weeks ago. Absolutely nothing on my bill changed, and my data plan (I'm grandfathered into the unlimited) remains intact.

That's AT&T though. Verizon recently announced they won't be grandfathering people anymore; once you go on a new contract, you have to pick a limited data plan. The only way to keep your unlimited is to stay off-contract.

AT&T lets you keep your unlimited data, but throttles you after 3GB. Verizon allows you to keep your unlimited data untouched, but you can't sign a new contract after this summer.

Ah, gotcha. I completely glossed over the mention of Verizon. I wonder how long it will take for AT&T to pull that stunt. Frankly the grandfathered data plan is the only reason my wife and I have never looked at another carrier.

So is it both an iphone AND a droid? Count me in! You know it's not really an Apple product because you're not grossly overpaying for it though.

So....turns out LTE is freaking awesome. Sitting in my office I have connection to the outside world at 11749 bps down, 4783 bps up - through my freaking phone (HTC One X). Since it's integrated on to the chip it's pretty power efficient too. My record in town for LTE speed was 28Mbps down, 9Mbps up - while riding in a car. If it wasn't for the data cap and online video games I could drop my home internet service entirely.

Yeah Sprint's coverage is spotty at best in the San Diego area and the internet is very slow compared to some of my other friends' carriers. And man, way to reward customer loyalty Verizon, by just not giving a fark. I wonder if there's a significant number of contracts that could be grandfathered to incur an actual cost or if they're just being greedy as usual.

I'm lucky enough to live in DC where I've had unlimited 4G service with Sprint for about two years now. I love it, too. It's basically Wimax, and it's awesome.

They are now offering LTE based 4G service here as well, and if I'm not mistaken by the end of the summer are supposed to be done with upgrading the whole DC & Baltimore area.

It sucks if you don't live in one of the city areas that they offer 4G in, sure, but for folks like me that do you can get unlimited data for a flat rate, and it's farking awesome. I'm moving my wife over to Sprint in October when my contact is up and I wouldn't even consider AT&T or Verizon, because of the lack of unlimited data plans. A smartphone, which is essentially a tiny computer, with the capability to use it as a hotspot.... and a data plan limited to 2 gigs or whatever? Fark that bullshiat. Sprint for the win.

I've never had any problems with cell coverage either, no matter where I go.

After reading Lifehacker and a few testimonials, I'm giving Straight Talk a chance. $45/month for unlimited* everything and works on any AT&T phone wether it is locked or not.

The only differences between AT&T and this reseller: 1) No visual voicemail 2) no roaming on non-AT&T networks 3) MMS is a bit of a biatch to get working (either need to jailbreak or edit plist files).

* unlimited being typical carrier speak for "we reserve the right to throttle or shut off your service if it is excessive"

why do you people buy this bullshiat.

Is it new and improved? Does it have Ice Cream Sandwich?

Well, if you have an existing LTE phone on Verizon, there's a good chance you have the unlimited data plan. At least, my wife does.

Yeah having no substantial reasons, hating something only because of the brand, doesn't show you are just some crazy idiot no not at all.

Really the "my brand is better than your brand" stuff is juvenile. Grow up and stop identifying yourself by the products you buy.

But the anti-Apple crowd would never say that so directly, because then it would be obvious that they're just as much consumer whores as the people they're complaining about.

I don't think he was freaking out about it. Just that it will be irritating. I am able to consolidate my carried items by using the same cable and charger for my iPad and iPhone. If I upgrade to the newer one and it does have a different connector, I have to carry extras.

The right connector for which one? It will be a pain regardless of the fact that the iphone cable comes with the iphone. I have one convenient cable that my iphone and ipad share and doing away with that would be really inconvenient. Not only that, how are you supposed to hook up the phone to all the thousands of iPhone-compatible devices since they will no longer be iPhone-compatible?
