...Who conceivably would not be president had he done hard time for MJ or cocaine possession according to the drug laws he is enforcing and making no effort to change.

Yeah, pretty big hypocrite on that whole issue. Especially if what is in that biography is true.

There are political costs to changing long standing policy. There is very little political cost to hypocrisy anymore. Vote in some support locally and in congress, and he may have room to "evolve" his stance on the issue.

The presidency is the head of a political coalition, always. No one who votes their conscience every time is going to be able to get elected president. The nominee has to be able to displace their own beliefs with those of their supporters.

Obama has more spine for taking political risks in support of principal than any Democrat that's been the nominee since Dukakis, but he can't work miracles. If people who want the war on drugs ended win the ground game for Congress and the States in 2014, Obama will take action before the end of his second term.

Well-worded reply, but what really pissed me off about Obama's drug policy is he won't even consider legalization. He won't even go so far as to say that maybe we should consider it. I'm not sure how true the allegations of being a pothead go, but I don't think anyone believes he never inhaled and clearly smoking a little pot didn't hurt his career that much.

This type of publicity probably only strengthens his anti-pot position. Like they said way back when "Only Nixon could go to China" and the flip side of that is "Obama can never give any support to marijuana".

I'm sure he hates it - he cannot afford to be viewed as the dope-smoking president.

The thing I took from the video (the hypocrisy, I already knew about) is that Obama was not fun to get high with.

I share your skepticism of his political maneuvering, especially considering his partying habits when he was young. I have to, however, consider the international implications if the US changed course on drugs, even marijuana. MJ is illegal in just about every country worldwide, and for us to suddenly make it legal could create havoc with our trading partners.

It is still worth decriminalization, considering the insidious system this otherwise low-risk herb otherwise feeds because of the prohibition. It is just that it would take a massive effort and political capital to legalize pot properly.

Very much this. Also, a man who repeatedly Bogarts resources and covers up with bad jokes as president? Haven't we seen this before? Come to think of it, when has there been a president who didn't bogart the joint, the bottle, or the hookers ass with coke on it, then make bad jokes to cover it up? All the way back to the founding frat boys, hemp-smoking, absinthe-swilling party monsters, all of 'em! And now there is a virtually illiterate freshman congress. Thank (Insert name of pagan female deity here) for equipping Michelle with lightning lasers that correct his behavior.

why do you say that? While I don't know the president personally, I think he's a "nice guy" and people like him. He doesn't seem like a dick, and if you were partying with him, he's probably that cool funny guy that you didn't mind if he went out of turn.

The video clearly states that he would find excuses to toke out of turn. I truly thope this allegation turns out to be false.

You're absolutely right. I'm two days older than Obama. I was stationed on Oahu when I was 18, through 21. In my second year there, the military initiated drug testing throughout the services. From my aviation unit, out of approximately 200 soldiers, 160 were busted in the first year. I still don't know how I never got caught, cause I smoked more than all you FARKers put together.

Good point. It's lucky for Shrub that he didn't do time for it either.

Clinton says he "did not inhale," but I doubt anyone believes him. I sure don't. But I also don't care. Ronnie had his jelly beans, and I'm not sure what their other contemporaries got up to, but I'm sure they're not squeaky clean. (With the possible exception of Bush Sr., whom I suspect might have just sat in a corner at night with a dust cover over him.) Earlier CICs were drinkers, and not shy about it, as that was accepted in their time. And in the future, no one will give a rat's ass if the prez partied in their youth. In fact, it might be more suspicious if they haven't. I'll bet even Romney snuck a soft drink now and then.

Yeah, that would be a huge scandal if it turns out to be true. I hope for his sake it's not.

Different (fictionalized) president, but maybe it's relevant...

Kumar Patel: So you get high and you put other people who smoke weed in jail?
George W. Bush: DUH!
Kumar Patel: That's so hypocritical!
George W. Bush: Oh yeah? Well let me ask you something, Kumar, do you like giving hand jobs?
Kumar Patel: No sir.
George W. Bush: Do you like gettin' hand jobs?
Kumar Patel: [smirking] Heh, yeah.
George W. Bush: Yeah well, that makes you a farkin' hypocriticizer too, so shut the fark up! Now smoke my weed.

This would all be valid if Obama's administration hadn't actually stepped up efforts to shut down the medical marijuana industry. Even Rolling Stone has stated he's worse on marijuana than Bush.

Cloudchaser Sakonige the Red Wolf: Are those "Taiwanese News Animations" for real or are they a joke?

What do you mean? Do you mean do they actually exist outside your head, as I presume (admittedly, without absolutely incontrovertible evidence) that you do outside mine? Assuming you can reasonably accept the independent existence of things beyond your immediate perception (or your impression thereof), then yes, they really exist.

Do you mean, are they really Taiwanese? Yes, they are. They are made by Next Media Animation, a Taiwan subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Next Media. The language used is mainly Mandarin, but English-language versions also exist.

By "are they a joke," do you mean are they meant to be funny instead of serious? I believe they are. I'd find it very hard to imagine how they couldn't be meant as such.

Or do you mean, "are they someone's idea of a prank"? Well, that depends on what you mean, and that's not at all clear. If you mean, are they meant to fool anyone, I don't see how. It's very easy to look them up, after all, and though they present a certain lighthearted take on the news, they don't seem to intend to present anything false or misleading. So if by "joke" you mean "fake," as in not real, not animated, not based on anything, not Taiwanese, or not factual, then no, they're not a joke. They're real, they're really Taiwanese, and they discuss actual events, or at least popular perspectives on real events.

Seriously, what the hell are you asking?
