Relatively Obscure: I can't bring myself to care about typos.

The funny thing is it's not just a "typo" - that'd be amusing, but it's not like a misspelled word in a paragraph, or even a sentence. It's a misspelling in what is basically a logo. THAT is what is being mocked.

I cna't either. I'm sure we had some notoriously bad spellers as presidents and presidential candidates before we had all this app shiat and this instantaneous and continuous influx of information to wag our fingers at smugly.

If this is what someone wants to make a story of, so be it. But in my opinion it shows desperation when there really should be none.

I still cannot believe that nobody caught this before it was published.

The entire point of the app was to take photos of people and things with their text/logos overlayed. The chances of shenanigans was already high, but this puts that way over the top.

Social media is a harsh mistress, and, as usual, the Republicans are on the wrong side of it.

Maybe, but for the fact that Obama made a verbal slip, which each of us are bound to do ever so often, while this was a rollout of a computer program (which would have presumably been proofread before release). It's also fittingly ironic that what Romney wants to do will, in fact, make a much worse Amercia.

I think a better question is why the fark does Romney even have an iPhone app? This is why i hate modern social media and technologies... its a bunch of clueless shiatbrains misusing the technology for no logical purpose, and brings down the overall quality of things like the Apple store.

The worst part is before this typo, no one would have cared about Romneys app. Now everyone and their mother is going to download it to see the typo, which will shoot the app up through the popularity lists, which creates a snowball effect and makes even more people download it. Goddamnit so much.

Even without the typo, the app is stupid.

In 2008 the Obama campaign released an app that would locate campaign volunteer opportunities and events nearby (anything from house parties to envelope-stuffing) and allow activists to coordinate with each other.

It also had a full list of the candidate's position on pretty much any issue you wanted to know about, in summary and detail form, with the idea being that a supporter trying to persuade someone else would have that info at the ready.

Mitt's app puts a farking logo on a JPG.

Campaign Rule number 1: When trying to lead a country, knowing the correct spelling of it's name is pretty key.

CSB: I used to work at a small local midwestern newspaper, (circ 30 - 40K daily) Every fall, we'd do hunting stories, and one year, there was a full page story on deer running season. Now, mind you..this story made it through the reporter...the section's editor...the city editor....the copy desk...and the copy desk chief. Not until the damn story was published was the newsroom staff alerted to the fact it was 'rutting', and not 'running'. No one thought that it was odd that a story that clearly detailed behaviors of deer breeding season included about 100 references to run/running, and how that didn't seem to make sense for a mammal who clearly has no issues procreating spent that much time in mating season running. It was a fun day laughing and pointing at the Sports/Outdoor's desk that day!

For a perfect example, just look at one of the greatest teams ever assembled: the 2006 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. That team had David Eckstein, Yadier Molina, So Taguchi, and Aaron Miles. I don't think anyone's making a big deal about it. The general app itself is much more stupid than the typo.

I think I know what happened Mitt "offshore all jobs" Romney went for the lowest bid on this. I don't blame the programmer who did this, his language probably is a bunch of squiggles to us, just like ours is to him.

LectertheChef: Pearl of wisdom from Josh "Moran" Sullivan:
For a perfect example, just look at one of the greatest teams ever assembled: the 2006 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. That team had David Eckstein, Yadier Molina, So Taguchi, and Aaron Miles. That's a Jew, a Mexican, a Chinaman, and a regular American. It was a variable "League of Nations" of doing the little things.

When I read that, I read it in a voice that's sort of a mixture between George W. Bush and Lawrence from Office Space. It fits amazingly well.

Yes, but you can be sure that won't stop the hard-core derpers from printing them out on a full sized posterboard in all of their pixelated glory.

And what kind of social media super genius creates an app that allows users to connect a candidate's slogans to photos of ANYTHING and then unleashes it without considering that funny image macros are the currency of the internet realm? The typo is just the fuse on the powder keg.

I love it that Fark is now considered liberal. 10 years ago it was tough being a liberal around here. Now it's like everybody is finally admitting that I was right all along. Not that I really consider that many people here to be truly liberal, but at least now they're not chanting USA! Plus we can harmlessly joke about the French again.

Just curious. Did you get the 5 am visit from the rednecks who 'took' the first deer of the season? Did you have to take a photo of the two drunks and the dead deer mugging for the camera from the back of the pickup truck? How about the guys who stopped by the newspaper to show off the Channel Cat they caught? "Harry, get them outside, take their photo and get their names." "Gee, dad. What if the catfish doesn't have a name?"

A friend of mine is convinced it's monkeywrenching on the developer's part. That could be, but the Romney campaign has been such a morass of clueless clownshoes that I think simple incompetence is the easier explanation.

Harry Freakstorm: BeatrixK

Clearly, you are a subscriber to this fine piece of Northwest Missouri journalistic excellence! That, or you have worked there, and experienced this same influx of locals clamoring for inches at the beginning of every hunting season...

I wish I was kidding, but this same newspaper also misspelled it's masthead for 77 years! Link

Maybe Romney hired this people to work on his pr?

No, it's just a typo.

By the end of today, googling "a better Amercia" will no longer result in "Showing results for a better America". But you keep bleating that protest into the wind if it will make you feel better.

If you make a typo in a search term on Google, Google will correct your typo. An hour ago, if you searched for "Amercia", you would get results for "America". But now, if you search for "Amercia" you get pages of results for Mitt Romney's devastating failure to understand how the internet works. When it becomes a valid search term on Google, it's no longer "just a typo".

This is Amercia:

This is the continent of America:

First off, if you're talking about the entire landmass from Canada to Chile, it isn't a single continent, nor is it called "America" (singular). It's called "The Americas" (plural) and it consists of two continents and an isthmus (or just two continents, if Central America is taken to be part of North America).

AmorousRedDragon: Who is misunderstanding this and why was that necessary? When people say "America", it's implied to be the U.S., seeing as how the "United States" isn't a name so much as a descriptor.

Secondly, the "misunderstanding" comes from the resentment some people living in the Americas (but outside the USA) feel about the appropriation of the term "America" to mean the USA, and "American" to be the adjectival form for "USA".

In Spanish, for example, "Americano/a" refers to anybody or anything from North OR South America; if you want to refer to someone or something of or from the USA specifically, you use "estadounidense" (from "Estados Unidos" which literally means "United States"). Many people in Latin America feel that English ought to work the same way: "America" should mean both North and South America, and there ought to be some adjective in English along the lines of "Statesian" to take over what we use "American" for now.

It's my understanding that some Canadians also dislike this usage of "America" and "American" in English as well. So yes, there is, generally speaking some disapproval of this; some people find it arrogant or presumptive.

Personally, I think it would have been better had we gone with Columbia, although that might have lead to confusion with Colombia. Then again, if the USA had taken the name Columbia instead way back in 1776, say, then maybe the South American country could have just kept "Granada."

It's just sloppy is what it is. Sure, Romney didn't make the typo himself but someone he hired to hire someone else to make a simple TV commercial did fark up and that would be okay except whoever should have looked at it to be sure it was ready to air apparently farked up too. Those people may not have been Romney, but it hints at an inability to hire people who aren't so stupid they can't even notice when they've misspelled the name of their country.

You'd think that if you paid good money to an advertising agency that at least a half-dozen people would see the finished product before it goes on the air. And nobody caught this? Are you kidding me?

How about this? Spanish speaking people can use their language as they wish to refer to America. English speaking people will do the same. No one will force the other to accept their view as the only valid one and everyone will try real hard to overcome their butthurt.

It's my understanding that some Canadians also dislike this usage of "America" and "American" in English as well. So yes, there is, generally speaking some disapproval of this; some people find it arrogant or presumptive.

Meh, America bashing is a popular sport and people will cling to anything that reinforces their biases.. America is shorthand for The United States of America. That's it. Similarly, England or Britain is short for United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - at least it is on this side of the pond, and no disrespect is intended to other denizens of The British Isles if we occasionally say Britain and are referring to a political entity that excludes them. From what I gather, they probably don't want to be included anyway. If British/English/UKish folk want to refer to America as "the colonies", have at it.

The Canadians can lecture us as soon as they can convince their largest province that they're actually Canadian.

See, the thing about gaffes is that when people complain about them being meaningless political gamesmanship points, they forget that is exactly what an election is. Points. Votes. Getting more of the nominal selectorate means sometimes gaining with big important issues, and sometimes by making fun of the other side's idiocy. It doesn't matter if you thinks it's trivial, it matters if enough people don't.

It's not just a typo. It's his HEADLINE. It's his AD. Ads go out as a marker of what you want your product to be about: This is who we are. Imagine if Coke went out with a banner ad: "COKE IS THE RLEA THING!" or you went to buy a Ford F-015. And a patriotic candidate should at least be able to spell the name of his own country.

It's proof of the caliber of people with whom he surrounds himself. This man is going to be picking a cabinet, advisors, judges as well as a host of dignitaries, ambassadors and policy makers. "Brownie" dropped the FEMA ball under Bush during Katrina, but Bush put him there, and so Bush caught hell for it. If Hillary does something stupid, how well will "Hey, that was her not me" sound coming out of Obama's mouth?

President, it's where the buck stops.

My money is on most people think this is trivial. When the campaigns are in full swing in October, I cannot imagine this will be in the Obama campaign's top 100 talking points.

This gaffe, however, might be a teensy bit more significant.

Yeah, you might be right, people are better informed than we give them credit for. After all, he's right to get upset over it, it's not like the Poles ever did anything bad to the Jews.

You've got to be farking joking. The app guy is who Romney surrounds himself with?

I guess you were one of those people that were really upset that Obama started his political career in the house of a domestic terrorist. Or is close friends with and went to the church of a commie, racist, insane preacher for 20yrs. Should we go down the entire list of who Obama actually surrounds himself with? How long will that list be before we get to the guy that writes code for some little deal on the Obama campaign?

President, it's where the buck stops.

Right. Unless you're a libby douche, then anyone that brings anything up is racist.

If Obama were to do something like this, you can rest assured there would be right-wing pundits losing their shiat over it. Romney would most likely even put out campaign ads: "Do we really want a man who can't even spell 'Merika' running our country?"

So, yes, it's a small thing, but it's also another symptom of how inept Romney is.

2012-05-30 02:54:56 PM
In two months the republicans will be attacking Obama on how he spelled Amercia wrong. It's always been Amercia and any true Amercian will understand that. Only foreign born Kenyans and liberals spell it as "America". Elitists.

If you like. I can't think any less than I already do of politics and politicians in this country, so not sure what you would be trying to accomplish with that. I'd think just as bad of *ANY* politician who's team can't spell America.

President, it's where the buck stops.

You need to go look up the word "assume". Anti-Romney doesn't mean Pro-Obama. I hate them all, and think all politicians are crooked and can't/shouldn't be trusted.

Don't you think it's important for the leader of a country to know how to spell that country? We can only set the bar so low.

I somehow don't think Romney makes up his oun shiat just like Obama doesn't make up his own shiat.

ToeKnee666: Broom: I hate Romney. I loathe what he stands for. I think he is disreputable, dishonest, and unsympathetic to the problems facing the USA today; interested only in self-gain.

With that preface... what proof is there that this claim of a typo is accurate? One "screenshot" from one source. A staggeringly unlikely typo, in a glaringly obvious place, that was undoubtedly vetted before being used - it's a logo, not a simple piece of fluff text.

This story smells strongly of partisan lies.

Meh. The American electorate doesn't care about Poland and after a rant or two on Fox News, they will forget about it. And for the record, he didn't really say anything inaccurate, just poorly phrased. He should have said Nazi death camps in Poland rather than Polish death camps, but they were in Poland and therefore Polish.

And of course people think this is trivial. I don't think anyone's saying that Romney really believes America is spelled that way, or that it shows he'll be a bad President that he let a typo slip into his app. People just think it's funny. And perhaps some think, as I do, that this app was a retarded idea in the first place.

monoski: Lor M. Ipsum: Hires bad resources & does not pay attention to quality control
//small stuff but when running a national campaign under a magnifying glass, I expect better.

To me, 99.9999% of the stuff Romney says is a bigger red flag about the quality of his campaign. Using a single typo to qualify his campaign, especially one this far beneath his direct influence, is a HUGE stretch. There are plenty of reasons to rag on Romney, but this sure isn't one of them. Sure, it's funny, but as far as being indicative of his management? Whoopti-farking-do.

As I said; small stuff. It is more disturbing that he thinks he can cut our way out this deficit while increasing military spending. He is a smart man, he knows that math does not work. So the willingness to flat out lie to the public to pander for votes says vote Fartbongo to me.

When I saw that death camps article, I went over to foxnews.com to see what kind of juicy, "Obama wages war on Poland" headline they could cook up, aaand...nothing. It was hardly even a blip on their radar.

As far as gaffes go, these will both be forgotten in a week (although Mitt's might still at least be funny).
