(The Big Lead)   Yeah, so DeShawn Stevenson has an ATM in his kitchen. No big whoop, got it at Bank of America. Have you seen his giant cookie jar?   (thebiglead.com) divider line 29

If he lived in Stepford he could have a wife with a built-in ATM.

I have to ask....why?

Why would you need or want that?
How often, around the house, do you suddenly need to pull up to $500 out of your bank account?
Why not just leave a few ten's of thousands of dollars locked in a safe if you are that worried about the need to access cash?

This just seems silly and ugly.

I wonder if he realizes that somebody will have to come by periodically and actually place money inside the little box....

I wonder how much the ATM fee is.

And that is exactly what he has there. He just chose what he thought was a more interesting way to safely store and dispense his on hand money.

Next time before you get all high and mighty over what somebody else is doing, think about what you are going to type before you type it and submit it.

But dude, this isn't a safe, it's an ATM. Going to his house is like being at the club, because he's got an ATM. Just minus the hot chicks, but they'll show up too, because he's got an ATM!

ATMs. They are like house-bling for ignorant rich people.

In all likelihood, it probably is just an ATM-looking safe. Like something you'd find on Thinkgeek or ThisIsWhyImBroke. There's no indication (nor reason) why it would actually operate like a real ATM. What bank would trust having an ATM in a private residence like that?

Dumb purchases and not signing pre-nups probably have a huge part in that.

I don't know, if any money ever did come up missing, or there was evidence of tampering of the machine, you'd know who to suspect first.

This.

Also, it might come in handy if some of his friends are constantly hitting him up for cash: "Use your own damn money...ATM's in the kitchen."

Well hold on now, let's think about this.

* As secure as a safe.

* If other rich people want to come over and get money out of their accounts they can (the bank might even give him a kickback for it).

* Spending limit, you can only withdraw a certain amount each day.

* Not having to go to the bank if you carry no cash and have to run out (or get an assistant to run out) and get something.

* It's pretty serious bling.

* Federal Offense to steal from (say that about a safe!), plus if it is stolen from IT'S NOT YOUR MONEY! (again say that about a safe).

Yep, if I win the powerball, I'm getting an ATM in my house.

ATMs are, in essence, safes.

Not necessarily. Depends on who owns it.

Not necessarily, but maybe, and the second part, that if it is stolen from it's not your money is still valid.

I would say they're good for when you have stripper parties, but then you have to rig it to dispense ones.

However, it's mostly just hideous and I bet BoA would charge a monthly fee plus a fee every time they had to stock it plus a fee for every time someone had a withdrawal, plus a fee for it being in a private residence, plus a fee for incurring four fees, plus a five-fee fee, etc. (if it were actually a BoA machine)

If it's his own money, then if anyone else is able to access the ATM, they're taking his money every time. It also puts him in the situation where if he loses a bank/debit card he not only can't go buy things anywhere, but he can't access his own "safe."

I mean, you COULD think it's a brilliant idea, but then you just remember it's DeShawn Stevenson, guy who thinks a tattoo of Lincoln on his Adam's apple is a great idea.

Again, not necessarily. It's unlikely it actually came from a bank. Most like that are owned by either the place they are located or a non-bank company that leases them. In his case I would imagine he bought it and has it filled with his own money. It's even possible it's not really functional beyond being a very expensive piggy bank.

Now if he actually contracted with someone to place an ATM in his kitchen, then it wouldn't be his money. But I would be very surprised if anyone would do that because they'd lose money.

I think it's hilarious and a great talking point. People can spend money on what they want. My life isn't worse for seeing this, and actually think it's pretty hilarious.

Kinda jealous of the guy.

My guess - if you want to play poker at his house, there is no tab. You want to keep playing or don't have enough to cover, well he has solved that problem.

Cataholic: Strippers and card games...all you need to know.

I suspect you've got it right.

For those who are mentioning the fees, those typically get paid to the business (or in this case, kitchen) that houses the machine. Businesses with high traffic actually use the ATM as a profit center. They pay a lease, and then get a fee whenever anyone uses the ATM. I have a friend...yeah, that's it...a friend...who tells me that in certain places where people really might want cash in a hurry (e.g., places that routinely provide the two entertainment options mentioned by Cataholic), ATMs charge extremely high fees. Hint: it's not the bank taking advantage of those desperate souls.

Yuck, never go ATM in the kitchen.

2012-05-30 12:52:36 PM
An ATM is hardly anything like a safe. First of all, it requires a dedicated phone line, or internet connection. Secondly, someone has to come refill it and maintain it. Thirdly, the bank is either charging you a fee to have it, or per use, or both.
