It's about half that the US paid to the families of that Iranian airliner. But to be honest, the Vincennes was less understandable.

$100,000 was a lot of money in the late 60s. The median income of a family in 1968 was $8,632

In context it is. Burr was the last of about 6 comics just getting abused by some crowd of shock jock fans (Opie and Anthony ?) that were just there to heckle and be asshats. Burr just launches into a 10 minute long solid stream of consciousness of throbbing blue veined hate on that actually begins to win the crowd over so he deliberately switches up his insults to piss them off even more.

The Why Not Guy: I think we should get reparations from Senator McCain for making Sarah Palin a household name.

McCain squandered any political accomplishments from a long career by sucking up to the camp that used blatant racism to beat him in 2000, then solidified his legacy as a political joke by giving the national stage to the political equivalent of Forrest Gump with tits.

He's already been and will continue to be punished for that.

Still, the heckler was just being an asshole.

2012-05-29 12:42:25 AM
From what I have heard from other "residents" of the Hanoi Hilton, they couldn't stand McCain in their midst. Even as a POW he acted like a prima donna special vip prisoner being the son of an Admiral, and even had the audacity of suggesting that the POWs make bargains with the Vietnamese so some some of the prisoners (which would include him, of course) would be sent home right away (instead of ALL OF US WALK OUT OF HERE OR NONE OF US WALK OUT OF HERE stance that the majority of prisoners agreed upon as a united front).

Look ahead. The latter act might still make him a hero.

Palin's nomination was the beginning of the Republican Party's final spiral into sheer madness. She gave the Teabaggers power, let them take control of the narrative.

McCain may have given the final blow to the Republican Party. All that's left is to let it bleed out, and hope that its death throes don't do too much damage.

I wouldn't presume to speak about his POW experience, but it's a pretty safe bet he got some special treatment in the military because of his dad's status. That's the only explanation why his commanders would still let him fly a multi-million dollar plane when he'd already crashed 4.

He kind of reminds me of Lloyd Bridges in Hot Shots

"You know, men, I've personally flown 194 missions and I was shot down every one. Come to think of it, I've never landed a plane in my life."

Aviators can be like that. There's a host of retarded US attacks on our allies that are appalling. Like in OIF, when a pair of A-10s had been briefed not to attack anything with orange roof-panels. A British convoy with roofs orange and some trucks with the entire 21-foot roof painted with the Union Jack get attacked after the A-10s call in "armored column with orange missiles on the roofs".

In WWII, US Navy AA gunners were told not to fire at aircraft headed to France. We lost half a dozen P-38 Lightnings to Naval AA fire on their way to France. This is even worse if you know what a P-38 looks like - perhaps the single most distinctive aircraft of WWII.

Think of the most retarded thing you can.

You're about halfway to what has really happened.

So when a couple of Mirage fighters zoom past the USS Liberty at 1000 knots, I find it completely plausible that they misidentified her. Our own aviators have done worse.

I'll give any FIGHTER pilot the benefit of the doubt, regardless of nationality. Even that poor fool who shot down KAL 007. Trying to make a life-or-death decision at Mach 3 is hard.

Which is why the crew of the Vincennes did not get such benefit, I suspect. Or the Russian radar base who assured the pilot that the civilian passenger jet looked just like an incoming ICBM.

$100,000 in 1969 dollars will pay for the funeral, put the deceased's kids through college, and give his widow a few years of leeway before she has to find a job.

You know, I really do wish I could find a link to the articles, but some pages seem to slip away forever into the Internet. I still stand by my claims however. If you want to view McCain as some sort of POW patron saint, well that's just your opinion man. The are many other parts about the guy that shows him to be a dickslap.

This is the closest I can find with a cursory search, but it's not terribly reliable.

It should be noted that Vietnam's negotiator Le Duc Tho told Aevrell Harriman McCain refused early release.

He was asking about reparations for the families of US sailors that were killed when Israel attacked the USS Liberty.

He couldn't read Wikipedia?

"In May 1968, the Israeli government paid US$3,323,500 (US$22.2 million in 2012) as full payment to the families of the 34 men killed in the attack. In March 1969, Israel paid a further $3,566,457 in compensation to the men who had been wounded. "

Well, in that case Israel is our bestest friend.

The Why Not Guy: vygramul: So when a couple of Mirage fighters zoom past the USS Liberty at 1000 knots, I find it completely plausible that they misidentified her. Our own aviators have done worse.

I wonder if you'd be so understanding if an Iranian fighter had made the same mistake.

Probably. Obviously, enemies have more motive to attack one another. But no reasonable motive can be discerned for the US to shoot down the Iranian airliner, the Soviet Union to shoot down the Korean airliner, or for the Israelis to attack the USS Liberty. The Iranians would be remarkably unlikely to attack a US ship and then apologize and pay restitution.

No way someone else wouldn't post this eventually.

Note: I don't care if you're anti-Semitic or not, this particular "criticism" of Israel is lame, especially when there exist actual reasons that don't exist solely in the minds of conspiracy nuts to criticize Israel for.

He was asking about reparations for the families of US sailors that were killed when Israel attacked the USS Liberty.

Seriously? Israel paid ~$3.3mil in 1968. (About $22m in today's dollars.)

What about it?

When heckling, the more absurd the question the better. Freezes target's brain.

"Who is Spain?"
"Why is Hitler?"
"When is right?"
"Where was that stooped and mealy-colored old man I used to call Poppa when the merry-go-round broke down?"
"How was trump at Munich?"
"Ho-ho beriberi." and "Balls!" all rang out in rapid succession, and then there was Yossarian with the question that had no answer:

"Where are the Snowdens of yesteryear?"

/Just make it so the only people who are allowed to ask questions are those who don't have any questions and be done with it.

Mostly because we'd be at war within the hour. We dismiss the Israeli attack as an accident - which I don't dispute - but if it were an Iranian fighter I doubt we'd be hearing "accident" or "mistake" - so much as "retaliation" or "glass parking lot"..

I take serious issue with anyone referring to John McCain as a hero. If he hadn't relentlessly abused his father's connections and family name to keep himself in the air WELL beyond the realm of reasonability, he never would have been in that HEMISPHERE let alone a combat zone. The man had proven unfit for the duties he was demanding through daddy's admiralty over and over again, breaking flight rules and trashing several war planes before ever getting into a combat theater, and in his later years using official military flights to spirit his mistress out to visit him.

People who have any respect McCain only do that because he's managed his image well and they're TOTALLY ignorant of who he is and what he's actually done.

Well, of course. The victims of such a situation tend to feel that it was intentional and demand whatever action they feel they are able to conduct. When the US launched a couple of missiles during an exercise, hitting a Turkish ship and killing 5, there was widespread suspicion that the US was punishing Turkey for not doing more during Desert Storm. The Chinese think our bombing of their embassy in Belgrade was intentional for a host of reasons.

The more hostile the relationship, the more likely people will be willing to believe something was intentional.

I happen to think Israel isn't particularly friendly towards us, and, in fact, is probably not even our best ally in the region. But I won't allow my personal opinion to override my professional opinion. I used to be much more suspicious about this kind of stuff until I got exposed to the analysis of blue-on-blue in my day job. Now, my default position is that it's yet another bunch of stupid mistakes unless proven otherwise, and the standard of proof is pretty high considering the limitless stupidity exhibited on a regular basis in friendly-fire incidents. (You would not believe how often half a dozen idiotic mistakes, ANY of which would have prevented the tragedy, conspire to cause someone to die.)

vygramul: stoli n coke: vygramul: LectertheChef: vygramul: You can't blame people for being ignorant when it comes to the Liberty incident. Blue-on-blues frequently require incredible levels of retardation.

That wasn't blue-on-blue, that was a foreign military attacking us, unprovoked.

That was a foreign military thinking they were attacking an Egyptian ship.

See. They weren't just trigger happy. They were stupid, too. So that makes it okay.

"Worse"? No. No they have not.

It was intentional. They had motive.

SacriliciousBeerSwiller: Vygramul: Our own aviators have done worse.

"Worse"? No. No they have not.

They had some petty-ante motive people think is worth risking ruining their relationship with the only power in the world that might back them. It's important to know that the US was not Israel's sponsor back then, and the Brits and French had just reduced their commitment to Israel in order to improve their relations with Muslim countries. No pathetic excuse for a motive comes close to outweighing that.

Nothing about that attack is difficult to believe as typical blue-on-blue, and again, our aviators have been even dumber.

I used to think the metals mattered. My dad has a purple heart I used to be very proud of. Then I found out how much it's just politics and paperwork and realize they don't actually mean anything. After the analysis on John Kerry's metals got analyzed, they just don't impress me anymore. (I've never told my dad that.)
