Salt Lick Steady: proteus_b: Salt Lick Steady: It's pretty much common knowledge in the (older) military. John McCain was a prima donna little biatch.

Not being a 70+ veteran, I guess I'll have to take your word for it. Thanks for your service.

It wasn't my service, it was my dad's. Three silver stars and four purple hearts among many others. He won't tell me the details, but from what I can gather he crawled into enemy fire to pull his men out of danger on multiple occasions.

His unit reunites every year. They've started a webpage in is honor: Link

/you can thank me for my service to the homeless

Purple hearts? Everyone knows those don't mean anything. You can get those for dropping something on your foot.

And silver stars are just popularity and politics.

I'm not saying he wasn't a great man, I'm just saying the awards mean nothing.

Here's a decent account of his treatment as a PoW:

vygramul: The Iranians would be remarkably unlikely to attack a US ship and then apologize and pay restitution.

Mostly because we'd be at war within the hour. We dismiss the Israeli attack as an accident - which I don't dispute - but if it were an Iranian fighter I doubt we'd be hearing "accident" or "mistake" - so much as "retaliation" or "glass parking lot"..

I take serious issue with anyone referring to John McCain as a hero. If he hadn't relentlessly abused his father's connections and family name to keep himself in the air WELL beyond the realm of reasonability, he never would have been in that HEMISPHERE let alone a combat zone. The man had proven unfit for the duties he was demanding through daddy's admiralty over and over again, breaking flight rules and trashing several war planes before ever getting into a combat theater, and in his later years using official military flights to spirit his mistress out to visit him.

People who have any respect McCain only do that because he's managed his image well and they're TOTALLY ignorant of who he is and what he's actually done.

Well, of course. The victims of such a situation tend to feel that it was intentional and demand whatever action they feel they are able to conduct. When the US launched a couple of missiles during an exercise, hitting a Turkish ship and killing 5, there was widespread suspicion that the US was punishing Turkey for not doing more during Desert Storm. The Chinese think our bombing of their embassy in Belgrade was intentional for a host of reasons.

The more hostile the relationship, the more likely people will be willing to believe something was intentional.

I happen to think Israel isn't particularly friendly towards us, and, in fact, is probably not even our best ally in the region. But I won't allow my personal opinion to override my professional opinion. I used to be much more suspicious about this kind of stuff until I got exposed to the analysis of blue-on-blue in my day job. Now, my default position is that it's yet another bunch of stupid mistakes unless proven otherwise, and the standard of proof is pretty high considering the limitless stupidity exhibited on a regular basis in friendly-fire incidents. (You would not believe how often half a dozen idiotic mistakes, ANY of which would have prevented the tragedy, conspire to cause someone to die.)

Congratulations to the heckler. Obviously the little boy who said that the emperor had no clothes.

Was he praising day laborers? Doesn't he know those are just dirty immigrants?

Three silver, two bronze, four purple hearts, five air medals and two army commendations in one tour alone, but yeah, the "awards" meant nothing. I'm sure he just had his thumb up his ass the whole time and was so popular they gave them to him anyway. Dick.

Oh look, the folks who brought us the Purple Heart Band-Aid are mad because we aren't showing proper respect to decorated combat veterans.

vygramul: stoli n coke: vygramul: LectertheChef: vygramul: You can't blame people for being ignorant when it comes to the Liberty incident. Blue-on-blues frequently require incredible levels of retardation.

That wasn't blue-on-blue, that was a foreign military attacking us, unprovoked.

That was a foreign military thinking they were attacking an Egyptian ship.

See. They weren't just trigger happy. They were stupid, too. So that makes it okay.

Aviators can be like that. There's a host of retarded US attacks on our allies that are appalling. Like in OIF, when a pair of A-10s had been briefed not to attack anything with orange roof-panels. A British convoy with roofs orange and some trucks with the entire 21-foot roof painted with the Union Jack get attacked after the A-10s call in "armored column with orange missiles on the roofs".

In WWII, US Navy AA gunners were told not to fire at aircraft headed to France. We lost half a dozen P-38 Lightnings to Naval AA fire on their way to France. This is even worse if you know what a P-38 looks like - perhaps the single most distinctive aircraft of WWII.

Think of the most retarded thing you can.

You're about halfway to what has really happened.

So when a couple of Mirage fighters zoom past the USS Liberty at 1000 knots, I find it completely plausible that they misidentified her. Our own aviators have done worse.

"Worse"? No. No they have not.

It was intentional. They had motive.

They had some petty-ante motive people think is worth risking ruining their relationship with the only power in the world that might back them. It's important to know that the US was not Israel's sponsor back then, and the Brits and French had just reduced their commitment to Israel in order to improve their relations with Muslim countries. No pathetic excuse for a motive comes close to outweighing that.

Nothing about that attack is difficult to believe as typical blue-on-blue, and again, our aviators have been even dumber.

I used to think the metals mattered. My dad has a purple heart I used to be very proud of. Then I found out how much it's just politics and paperwork and realize they don't actually mean anything. After the analysis on John Kerry's metals got analyzed, they just don't impress me anymore. (I've never told my dad that.)

I get that. But to imply that all of those were politics or popularity is somewhat insulting. Hell, you can read above in the link I provided what went down for the first ss.

2xhelix: spongeboob: What was the heckler saying?

He was asking about reparations for the families of US sailors that were killed when Israel attacked the USS Liberty.

Wasn't that like 50 years ago? Was McCain somehow involved? If not, why bring it up?

With the gop controlling the house, yeah we would be at war before the grits are done cooking.
