There's some annoying thing going around Facebook now where someone posts a pic, like of Jesus, then says something stupid like "click share if you believe in Him, ignore if you don't" followed by a comment "like this comment if you want 1000+ friend requests in the next hour."

WTF?

Why do people want thousands of stranger Facebook friends?

Look, if you do stupid shiat like this, you shouldn't be allowed to call 911 when things happen. It's a waste of taxpayer money, and it wouldn't have happened if you didn't do said stupid thing. Last I checked, the real world won't coddle to you and put a band-aid on your boo-boo and make it all better. She should be glad the police didn't suspect her of making the money from drugs and lock her up instead.
What a waste of time.

I've already added a number of strangers who claim to know me from some website called "Fark", was that a bad idea? Should I remove them?

Only if the idea of being bound in a dank basement that smells of cheetos and beer, in which your only contact with the outside world is being featured in a Rugbyjock photoshop, yes.

She should be charged with aiding and abetting, or whatever the Aussie equivalent is. She obviously would not be convicted, but there is a faint glimmer of hope that it might put a scare into her and she'll proceed from that point with a modicum of common sense.

Also, I hope every one of her family and friends gives her the appropriate beatdown when they next see her. Stupid little AW could have gotten someone killed and she needs to understand the ramifications of her actions.

no, but chances are she posted her city, first and last name and a phone number or two along with some photos to help narrow it down. Certainly enough for a motivated thief to connect some dots with a phone book.

/also, the thief probably knows her.

Related Story: On Worlds Dumbest (something) on TV today - They showed a video of two thieves stealing $11K worth of equipment and jewelry from a house. The owners had a nightvision camera recording them doing this. So, the owners then posted the video to Facebook to see if anyone knew the identity of the thieves. Sure enough, someone recognized the nefarious duo and informed the owners. As it turned out, the thieves were FACEBOOK FRIENDS OF THE OWNERS. Get that? "Friends"

Hmm, let's see, what causes robbery?

☐ Acting stupid
☐ Posting on Facebook
☐ Having assets
Robbers

The formulation here seems to be "If she didn't want robbers to break in and take her [item] at gunpoint, she shouldn't have let anyone know she had [same item]." Where do you draw that line? Money? Computer? House? TV?

2012-05-28 11:18:28 PM

Intended victim's sawed off double-barrel 12-gauge: Blam, blam.

Heck I did a purge a few weeks back based on whether or not I could remember why I added them. My modest friend list got about a dozen names smaller in just five minutes. Paying attention can save you a lot of trouble.

Also, until this Deadspin story from last week, linking to this slideshow of college athletes doing embarrassing things (including lots of showing big piles of cash), I had no idea how common this "I have a lot of cash and I'm going to brag about it" thing was. Never would have occurred to me.
