A lot of people in this country pooh-pooh Australian table wines. This is a pity as many fine Australian wines appeal not only to the Australian palate but also to the cognoscenti of Great Britain.

Black Stump Bordeaux is rightly praised as a peppermint flavoured Burgundy, whilst a good Sydney Syrup can rank with any of the world's best sugary wines.

Château Blue, too, has won many prizes; not least for its taste, and its lingering afterburn.

Old Smokey 1968 has been compared favourably to a Welsh claret, whilst the Australian Wino Society thoroughly recommends a 1970 Coq du Rod Laver, which, believe me, has a kick on it like a mule: eight bottles of this and you're really finished. At the opening of the Sydney Bridge Club, they were fishing them out of the main sewers every half an hour.

Of the sparkling wines, the most famous is Perth Pink. This is a bottle with a message in, and the message is 'beware'. This is not a wine for drinking, this is a wine for laying down and avoiding.

Another good fighting wine is Melbourne Old-and-Yellow, which is particularly heavy and should be used only for hand-to-hand combat.

Quite the reverse is true of Château Chunder, which is an appellation contrôlée, specially grown for those keen on regurgitation; a fine wine which really opens up the sluices at both ends.

Real emetic fans will also go for a Hobart Muddy, and a prize winning Cuivre Reserve Château Bottled Nuit San Wogga Wogga, which has a bouquet like an aborigine's armpit.

"Now make yourself at home. Perhaps a glass of Bordeaux? I have the '82 Chateau Latour and a rather indifferent Rausan-Segla."

"I've been in prison, Cecil. I'll be happy just as long as it doesn't taste like orange drink fermented under a radiator."

"That would be the Latour, then."

Maybe farkers can answer this for me:

Is there anyone under 30 (or even 40) who enjoys white wine? I absolutely love a good red (usually a Pinotage or Syrah) but have yet to meet anyone near my age who would choose white, even with fish.

Cheap Rose I can get down with because it's like drinking kool-aid, not because it resembles "wine" in any way.

I paired a Dortmunder Gold with some Hebrew Nationals. They seemed to get along ok.

Hah! Subby wasn't even kidding. It really is an article about choosing wines and they led with a picture of a dude with a wine glass full of beer. Stupid mistake or clever jibe by the guy who added the picture to the article?

I usually find it too sweet, but I will partake in Chardonnay with grilled fish and chiucken

Yes. Try a white from Marlborough, New Zealand. I've had the sauvignon blanc from Brancott Estate and it's bright, like grapefruit with a touch of grass. This is coming from someone who enjoys beer and doesn't know jack shiat about wine but I can tell you I liked this stuff.

Wine at a Memorial Day cookout? Like it's so hard to find a good domestic beer these days. I enjoy a nice big red with a steak or whatever, but come on.

A good Saison or Kolsch would be more refreshing on a hot day anyway.

Im 23 and enjoy/prefer white wines. I'm not a fancy wine person to say the least though. I usually get a bottle of Gnarley Head Pino Grigio because it's cheap and doesn't taste too bad in my opinion.

I generally can't tell the difference between a cheap and an expensive white wine so long as it isn't too boozy.

Enjoys white? Yes. Very much. I also love red. Really good whites are really good, but I think you tend to find too many that are just bland.

Sweet. In addition to this, I've been wanting to ask:

1) Which caviar goes best with saltines?
2) What type of tie should I wear to my first NASCAR race?
3) How much should I expect to tip the valet at the Best Western?

I mostly go for red, but for whites I have occasionally enjoyed gewurztraminer. It's German, it tends to be slightly sweeter than normal without being cloying, and it doesn't have that dank gym sock smell that I hate. You could also try steel-aged whites instead of oaked whites.

My wife will only drink whites, but nothing too dry. I don't know that I'd say she's a aficionado (certainly no sommelier), but she swears by her Oak Knoll Niagra. I call it diesel fuel, and I drink everything from whiskey to gin.

So, in short; no. No, I don't know anyone who does.

I'm exactly 40 and whites are too acidic and sour for me. A good meaty red is the way to go. Syrah is my varietal of choice.

My wife loves all the sweet whites out there, though--Riesling, Gruener Vetlaner, Moscato.

Yes, it's always important to choose the correct vintage to enjoy with your anus-sausages.

/ i enjoy fine alcohols as much as the next snob, but let's get serious: as long as the wine cost more than one dollar a bottle, it's not going to be the weakest link in the chain here.

I'm 33 and I tend to prefer white wines - since I'm a New Zealander that's not really surprising as that's most of the wine produced here. I've developed a taste for pinot gris lately.

This. Except I'm over 60, and those Marlorough wines are fantastic for a white. I'm normally a bold Napa red person (try Hall 2009 Cab), but these are most pleasing and refreshing. Espesically in the hot Florida summers. Could become a wine snob if only I had the $$.
