The Conservatives seem to have a bad habit of suppressing history--you'd think that "traditionalists", "patriots", and "conservatives" would just lap up that stuff like it was champagne.

They gagged Government scientists and management making it impossible for many of them to travel, and forcing them to stonewall the press while everything goes through communications specialists who as often as not don't deliver anything, they've killed innumerable research programmes that might seriously embarrass their environmental policies, and now they're basically shutting down the National Archives. Oh, and the Portrait Gallery--they wanted to outsource that, but it seems to have died in the bud.

It looks pretty systematic, a scorched earth policy towards facts, pro-active confirmation bias, if you like.

Maybe they're just feathering their regional nests with patronage or maybe there's something far more insidious going on, but it doesn't smell kosher to me. So much for "accountable" government. You'd have better luck getting information out of "Johnny Tight Lips" from the Springfield mob. "I ain't saying nothun'."

I guess this is the new "Soviet-style" Conservatism.

This really is a shame. The Archive costs were pretty minimal in the grand scheme of things and I see no justification for killing the archives off.

Goddamn I miss the PC party. I wouldn't vote for them probably but they were a lot better than these reform/neo-conservative arseholes.

Heh suppress that history that Canada looked like a bastion of sanity to run to from the U.S. during the 2000-08 period. I don't mean to Harp on it but damn, what the heck is going on up there.

My thoughts. It's not even a proper write up, it's a summary of a letter from a reader. I'm not saying this isn't happening, but I'd like to see some more details.

You know. I never thought it would be possible to have a Prime Minister who was a bigger douchebag than Mulroney but Harper proved me wrong.

I have altered the deal, pray I do not alter it further.

That being said, on the face it may sound bad, but what is the actual transition plan? I won't judge until then.

We have the oil and Harper's a corporate whore.

2012-05-28 01:05:25 AM
Bill C-38 is horrible

It will allow DEA, FBI to arrest Canadians in Canada

It closes all kinds of important government watchdogs

Its a gift to the big oil industry

oh and the social security tribunal where 37 people will now do the job of 1000 in overseeing the EI appeals and its supposed to be more efficient this way

and an MP basically said MPs job is just to vote .. that they are told what to do and everything is decided by the senate

If Canadians don't protest this then we are done

Another article from a more reputable source. It's not just the archives. Libraries too:

"Transport Canada's library is now closed, too, with seven workers informed Monday their jobs are obsolete. They will now spend months packing up and told CBC News much of the collection will soon be in the trash."

Federal libraries, archives shutting down

Actually its the 54th state

51 Puerto Rico
52 Iraq
53 Afghanistan
then Canada....

sheesh no one remembers their states anymore....

2012-05-28 01:08:06 AM
This is happening in Michigan too. I remember reading an article where the state government wanted to shut down the Archives or shunt them over to Michigan State University. There was a particular anger against shutting down the genealogy section and the Mormon Church sent a letter asking the state to preserve the resource.

HAH.

You canadians like to point to how Fascist the United States is, but look.

Look at you now.

You're suffering under the Jack-booted Tyranny of those red-shirt Mountie Thugs, and your Fascist Leader, who wishes to rewrite history to serve his true agenda!

So when will you fire up your poutine reserves and invade the United States, Canooks? When will your jack-booted, furry lumberjack fist of tyranny descend on the United States!

A friend of mine spent the months leading up to the election spamming his FB feed with stuff just like this. Once in a while you got an actual story with some meat to it but mostly it was just noise. I'd like to see an in depth write up on what is supposedly going on, not some Eklund-esque write-a-rumor.

This is part of what I like to call the endgame of selfish capitalism. Libraries are free institutions and there is less money to be made from them. If you can force each person to purchase their own copy of a book or movie or internet access, the profits skyrocket. It doesn't matter what "public good" comes from free access to information. These are people who are looking at monetizing everything. Don't believe me? The same thing has happened with water. Why should restaurants give water that costs them a penny a gallon with a meal when they can sell bottled water for $1.25? Don't have $1.25? Guess you'll go thirsty. Not rich? Can't afford college but want to learn? Guess you'll go thirsty for knowledge...

They also consolidated the environmental disaster response teams, keeping the eastern Canada locations and shutting down the one in pipeline-strewn Alberta.

And they're shutting down the Kitsilano Coast Guard station and converting its search and rescue function to summer jobs for students. Link
