Your pets can do things with you that another person just can't.

Fabric_Man: Two thirds of British pet owners must have fish.

I was going to say something similar to this but less funny.

/No family and no pets, so I spent this year's vacation by myself
//I miss my pet bird

It depends on which pet and which family member.

laulaja: Dogs travel better than cats, who generally howl all the way to destination -- which for them is generally the vet practice.

In cats' defense, most of us would howl if the only time we got to travel was to the doctor. Sooner or later most of us would realize that every trip involved a guy who promptly shoves a thermometer up our butt, peeks in every hole, and sticks us with two or three needles. And that is when we look and feel healthy! Let there be the tiniest fever, sniffle, or the remotest possibility of parasites and... well, that's just too ugly to describe here.

You are right, most dogs travel well. Mine does, and I consider myself lucky because she goes to sleep before we get to the main street. I have had excited dogs that would hang over your shoulder and pant for the duration, dogs that were whiny anxious, and dogs that got car sick. Of many cats, I have had only one that got car sick and only one who liked to travel. The one that liked to travel was a great cat, but she insisted that the car to be kept at about 55º inside and didn't like any of my music, not even the classical music. I can live without music but I hate freezing my a** off.

Good luck with your "I got off the bus at about thirteen and everybody but my sports team and my dog SUCKS" '50s sitcom life. It has been noted that a lot of people use interactive web sites to shoot snot, venom and tough monkey insults at people under the security blanket of anonymity. I'd put hard cash on you being one of those people. Goodbye.

Not quite sure if serious. Not quite sure if you know what Fark is.

I am quite sure, this troll was a large negative number.

As an aside, what makes you sure where I was at 13?

The whole idea of a vacation with a pet instead of family member(s) may not be a good one. Too much of a chance that I might just....keep.....going...........

The water was cold: Obvious tag absent?

I came here to say the same thing. :)

Study after study has shown that time spent with pets lowers blood pressure and stress while time with friends and family increases them.

LoneWolf343: Apparently, 2/3rds of Britons have good family lives. Good on them...the lucky limeys.

And here I was thinking two-thirds of Britons lie about who they'd like to vacation with.

I can believe this; when I go to visit my parents I'm actually there to spend time with the German Shepherds. When one has a choice of playing with the GSD's or listening to my burned out father biatch about life, or my wingnut mother biatch about the taxes she doesn't pay, (she's never held a job in her life) playing with the dogs is the obvious choice

My parents and I went up to northern California to see the redwoods (I'd never been) and took the family dog. Sweetest animal alive, but not exactly an alpha type.

As soon as we got out of the part of LA that she recognized, she curled up on the backseat next to me and started to tremble. Every time we stopped, she was incredibly skittish.

When we finally got up north, she was entirely unimpressed by the redwoods (echoes of Steinbeck's Charley), but went out of her MIND at the snow, bounding around like a rabbit.

All in all, though, I think she'd have been happier staying home with a dogsitter she knew and loved.

our ferrets get to go camping (aka the ferret kennel) when we go on holiday.

I start preparing them about a month ahead of time, telling them how much they loved camping last time, and reminding them of all the new ferret friends they made, and how much fun they're going to have annoying all the new ferrets

/yes, I'm nuts.

I don't care if people take their pets on vacation, so long as they follow the rules (either explicit or common-sense).

Leo is my co-pilot. He sits in the front seat like a person, doesn't complain (except in slow traffic) and needs to use the bathroom less than I do. He also has lymphoma. We're doing his bucket-list trip this summer.

The only reason I wouldn't is that my pet my would hate it. Other than that, a great hairy YES.
