The PDF is kind of friendly, I'm on a crappy DSL and it's easy to download and navigate.

Oh, how I love Top Gear. I have a brain crush on James May.

I was surprised how 'slow' the CTS-V went around their track. Wasn't it at one time and maybe still is, the fastest sedan in the world? Hell, the Euro version of the Ford Focus had two better times. I guess I'd have to look at the chart again to see how other big "saloon cars" did.

Top Gear's track is short and has very tight corners. Lighter cars with tons of grip are naturally going to do better (hence why the Veyron doesn't hold the top time), and the CTS-V is a pretty big car that's rather conventional in design. It's going to lose a lot of time in places like the hammerhead.

IMO it gives you a much more realistic estimate of a car's performance on actual roads than, say, the Nürburgring, which has lots of straights and smooth curves that allow a heavier vehicle to make up time. It's not that hard to make a car go fast, but it is hard to make one go fast round tight corners.

Way cool. I have Forza Motorsport 4, which has the Top Gear Test Track, and sometimes I take a car they've tested on the show and try to match the lap time. I can't even come close most of the time (especially since The Stig sets his times from a standing start).

To further clarify on that point, in order to do a 1:45 (faster than the best time in the Reasonably Priced Car) on the Top Gear track, you have to have an average speed of 60mph. The fastest car they've run through there in a power lap (an F1 car back in '04 with a time of 0:59) hasn't averaged over 105. The course record for the Nürburgring is an average 120mph or so.

For a moment I thought that said "Infocom" and I spent a minute wondering what a Top Gear text adventure would be like.

The chart is wrong. For example, the Carrera GT was on episode 4 of season 4 and set the lap record at that time. The chart has it as episode 2 of season 5. I'll leave it up to the rest of you to find the other errors.

Wouldn't the tactile response in the car increase general performance though? You can feel, hear, see, and smell when the car's ready to be shifted. In a video game you just see it, and that depends entirely on the game designers interpretation of the cars performance.

That's why I have so much fun tormenting kids with their lifted 4x4s and other trucks here in WV on our backroad twisty 2 lanes.
It's not very fun when the old fart in the rusty minivan or Chrysler 200 leaves you in the corners. It doesn't matter how much power you have when you're on the brakes.

That CTS-V time was "very wet". Take off 6 seconds. (I still get a big smile every time I get in mine!)

Think about this: For around $90,000, the 2012 Nissan GT-R is 6 seconds faster than the fastest car money could buy ten years ago. It's also a 4000 pound car that is only 2.7 seconds off of the record time set by the Ariel Atom V8, which is basically a gigantic engine strapped to a bare chassis. That's some serious engineering right there.

If I had the money, it's either GT-R, or Lexus for daily driving + Ariel Atom for fun. Of course the new McLaren MP4-12C is pretty awesome too. Decisions, decisions.

Yeah, I think if I could have any of the top cars they've had on the show, it'd be the GT-R. That thing is unbelievable.

'Have the money' means I have lots of money for other things and thus money to spare on a supercar. I'd go with the house too.

unfortunately, it's still a Nissan. Sure...it might be fast off-the-line, but later on you will have many issues. That..and it's ugly. Unless your track racing in your daily drive, there are better options that are still incredibly fast for that price tag.

I have a Citroen Xantia Activa. Looks like a boring family hatchback. Will out corner many Ferrari's. That is fun.

They had it on S2E5 again. Maybe the Stig didn't drive it til the later episode?

You don't have to spend tons of money to build a nice Giant-Killer. I built a Westfield (Lotus 7 Clone) for just under 15k. Westfield's competition is Caterham; I think there's a few models of Caterham that have been around the TG track.
