even CHINA is saying we treat protesters too harshly...yeesh.

2012-05-26 02:43:45 PM
Considering how well the Chinese treat the Tibetan separatists, I do not believe that China could ever, EVER, be right on human rights issues

Knowing China, they probably think we are being too easy on them.

Oh, who is dumb enough to buy China's BS propaganda on human rights? Seriously.

my take on this? China is mocking the US. we've made a lot noise about being THE number one country on human rights...but now we can't make that claim anymore. And you know what? the Chinese are right: we're no longer interested in human rights or protecting the weak.

dance around that all you want...but its true.

No, they have a very valid point. It's the pot calling the kettle black. But the US hasn't exactly been a beacon of freedom and rights the past decade.

Oh, please, the way the US handles protestors is a far cry from being jailed indefinitely or possibly executed as a dissident. You can drink their Kool-Aid if you want. I'll pass. They're just trying to slap back at the US for its criticism.

No, I didn't say that, but we're a far cry from China. But, maybe you're right and both sides are bad, so vote China...

I am *so* waiting for the Chinese to come up with their own Jack Bauer/Clint Eastwood action flick, where a pair of Chinese tourists in DC run afoul of TSA/DHS, and are sent away to a combination SuperMax inside Cheyenne Mountain. Couple is rescued by aforemented Eastwood prototype, defeating a squadron of B2 bombers in the process.

Can they prove any content is being blocked in the US? Because we sure as hell can prove that China does.

We are better than China on human rights, no question in my mind about that, but is that really the standard we should be comparing ourselves to? We're better than Somalia on feeding our people too. That means we're awesome, right?

Meh, kettle calling the pot black.

Obviously China is full of shiat but as other people are saying, they do have a point. It's not just the U.S, many western countries are moving backwards on social freedoms, yet still feel the need to tout their moral superiority.
/China really should shut up though, like they really cared about freedom when they supported Assad in the U.N vote (let alone what they do to their citizens)

Seeing the way the Tea Party has been treated I'm inclined to agree with the Socialists in Peking. Even they know their fellow travelers in the administration and the slovenly mobs backing them up are out of control.

I think you're both right.

Obviously, China still has a much worse human rights record than the US, and so them criticizing the US over human rights is a vaguely ridiculous propaganda exercise.

That said, I don't laugh it off completely. The US does have areas it needs to improve, and has gotten demonstrably worse in protection of human rights and civil liberties in the last decade or so.

Yep. ObL won.

China has an abysmal record on human rights but now so does the USA. The US has the world's largest prison population by far, many imprisoned for trivial reasons. Child imprisonment, executions, three-strikes, asset forfeiture (no trial, no evidence, nothing), eminent domain, torture, the list goes on and on and on. The government is a puppet-show controlled by the corporations who buy the politicians quite openly, it's virtually a one-party state. There's very little real difference between the parties, all corporate cocksuckers. Watch the closing speech in The Dictator and see if it doesn't ring true.

2012-05-26 04:05:58 PM
Are we better than China regarding human rights issues? Yes. Are we different than China regarding human rights Issues? No.

That's the standard America should strive for: That we are far different than than Chinese on human rights issues.

Is it such a huge of problem that people need to be censored and spied upon? It's not like child porn is an internet-free-for-all or something. It's just a morally reprehensible scape-goat. It's also a dick move to assume that people against internet surveillance are in support of child pornographers and thieves or something.

As much as I would dimiss China as a cocksucking Communist nation, I wouldn't say the U.S. has even a good human rights record. If you've even read some recent Supreme Court rulings, it appears there is a slow but foward move to take away a lot of our "inalienable" rights.

"At least we're not China!" is not the recipe for a sterling human rights record. The sheer number of citizens we do incarcerate, regardless of the term of their incarceration, is a blemish on all citizens of the US.

we DID rescue a lot of people from the holocaust. that's gotta count for something. plus we've also gotten a lot of people out from under various oppressive regimes around the world. were we perfect? oh hells no...but we were surely better than most anyone else.

we can't even make that claim anymore. if some cop somewhere wants you in chains then well...you're ass is ending up in chains and that's all there is to say about that.

Sadder still, I think a lot of voters actually like the country we've become: just look at the chorus of people willing to cheer on the likes of Sheriff Joe, Mike Bloomberg, Ray Kelly, the Texas court system, and the Oakland PD. There's a lot of ugly people in this country, and no shortage of politicians waiting to do their bidding
