As a Canadian who recently, and stupidly, let her passport expire...having to apply for a new one was quite a nightmare. But I got it done in a few months ...big deal, life goes on.

Having said that, I take offense at using 'the Sun' as a news source as they take pride in publishing ne-ocon, racist sentiments such as "it really burned me to have to answer questions about my Canadian identity to an immigration person whose accent I could barely understand"

Nothing grinds my gears like old white guys complaining they have it rough, and then thinly veiling blame on immigrants.

I applied for a British passport in Uzbekistan, from the British Embassy who had it flown over from Germany where it was printed. It took a couple of weeks.

If this guy's father had done the right thing, he would gotten him a registration of birth abroad shortly after the kid was born, and then applied for landed immigrant status. The military would have helped with that. Mind you, that doesn't mean he still wouldn't have problems later on, but it makes things a bit easier.

If a government representative is going to ask me questions about my citizenship or identity, I would find it a bit ironic that the people asking the questions sounded like they themselves hadn't lived in the country more than six months.

Being a Canadian... and having to come in the outside door... and the door isn't Canadian... you don't see the problem here?

Canadians have problems? This shocks me, as my former United States citizen-now turned Canadian citizen friends always paint Canada as a land flowing with rainbows that taste like fruit roll-ups and chocolate rivers and annoyingly happy people.

Then again, they are coming from here.

No shiat. We registered our kids in Canada and Finland shortly after each was born. No muss, no fuss, and the forms were no worse than the insurance paperwork. Granted, we had to fill out forms for 3 countries. Still, each form (individually) was no longer than the insurance form.

We often get asked why we registered them in all 3 countries. Well, the kids can now work / go to school in the US, Canada, or any EU country.

Grow a pair and blame their parents for not doing their job, subject of story guy.

Although his comments were indeed thinly veiled racism, I'm starting to get sick of the whole "you're a white male, so your problems don't matter" attitude.

Having said that, I was born in Germany to Canadian military parents. I have a registration of birth abroad certificate; never had an issue with getting a passport.

None of this proves citizenship. Proof of citizenship:

If you were born outside of Canada, provide one (1) of the following documents issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada:

- Certificate of citizenship**
- Certificate of naturalization
- Certificate of retention of Canadian citizenship
- Certificate of registration of birth abroad

I don't see anything about a "DND certificate of birth" on there.

You should try renewing your Canadian Passport while being a Permanent US Resident. Fun times, especailly as the Canadian Passport pohoto specs are just slightly different than the US ones, so you can't just pop over to Walgreen's & get it done - you have to find a photographer who's willing to read & comprehend all the details (no smiling! no!). & then you have to hope the folks in Hull are in a good mood.

You also have to find another non-related Canadian Permanent Resident who's willing to vouch for you - that takes beer.

Er. Oops. An old passport only acts as identification not proof of citizenship. You always have to send in proof of citizenship when you renew your passport.

It has something stupid to do with Passport Canada being a separate entity from Citizenship and Naturalization and so forth. Vital records are not sharable between government entities.

2012-05-26 11:28:08 AM
The hoops you have to go through to get a Canadian passport aren't that bad even if it isn't just a renewal.
If your passport has been expired for less than a year, it's still considered a renewal.
If you are complaining about how difficult it is to get a Canadian passport, I see a lot of tears whining in your future.

I didn't read it as blame just irony, maybe if you quit looking for racism everywhere you could appreciate irony.

Quite likely that person was in that job because of the number of foreign speaking people they deal with, it's rare to have an English speaking person as an immigrant, because lets face it, our countries rock. Even if we do biatch we have more liberties than most countries where a majority of immigrants are fleeing.

Nope.
I just renewed my passport with the Simplified Renewal Process.

If you are eligible to use the Simplified Renewal Process, you need only provide a completed Simplified Renewal Passport Application (PPTC 054) accompanied by your most recent passport, the required fee and two recent photos*.

Not to mention you pay 100 bucks for a five year Canadian passport, but the US one lasts 10 years. Twice as much bang for your buck. A little more since the Loonie is slightly overtaking the dollar on exchange.

Heh, the Sun's comments are always a party and a half - nice that folks who really believe that stuff have a place to vent and can leave other spots to the vast majority of more reasonable Canadians....

I have already BTDT a long, long time ago. I am German born, but my father was Canadian and my mother a Canadian citizen (amongst other citizenships) born in India to a Canadian father. Somewhere along the line both my birth certificate and certificate of Canadian Citizen born Abroad got lost. There was quite a bit of work involved to get the papers sorted in time, but I needed proof of citizenship for a band trip when I was 18.

It was a big paperwork mess, but finally I became a Canadian citizen (again) in 1982. Woohoo.

These guys have a problem too, and basically it's similar to mine. Good luck to them, but obviously somebody really should have got that registration of Birth Abroad done. It really does make a difference.

/Still haven't replaced my birth certificate, but it appears that the Rathaus in Heidelberg has a nice English page to get your certificate ordered online!

You're welcome.

I use that site for doing my passport photos. They know the dimensions and other criteria for various countries and can spit out a JPG image you can upload to Walgreens and have printed for a few cents.

US ones are easy as they're 2x2 inches (and a 4x6 inch photo yields 5 photos [the sixth space is a little ad for the website]). You just cut them out and they're exactly the right size. For other countries the site puts some filler in the right spots so the photos are the right dimensions.
