This hasn't been news in the west since at least the 1950's.

What lies in the shadow of the statue?

This is really cool. I wonder why they thought to begin such excavation.

Are there so many Moais that are positioned on the ground in the right configuration? I thought the upright ones were all on platforms and the rest were resting on their sides, abandoned on the side of the road.

Nova did a show on this in 1998. Quite interesting.

Was wondering about this. I recall reading something about this (with photos) when I was a kid. And I'm well into my 30s. Thought it was fairly common knowledge?

What next, rings around Saturn?

Why yes, some of the heads have bodies. Just like that whole row of heads with bodies that everyone has seen in every textbook for ever that you conveniently included in the article.

Fark ran this update on the excavations months ago, but I can't remember the headline.

If you haven't heard it before, it's news.

Kind of like the story a few weeks ago about teens finding out that there really WAS a Titanic ocean liner and that it did hit an iceberg.

Congrats, you know some history. I guarantee there are lots of historical events you don't know or remember that someone else does.

Whoa - before I even turned on the Fark box this morning I was making breakfast, got a piece of ground meat stuck under my fingernail, and remembered that phrase from some article I read years ago.

Well, recycling this news every decade or so sure beats recycling news about the dangers of above-ground swimming pools every darned summer.

Recent excavations have discovered this old story in an ancient stack of yellowing newspapers.

From the comments under the article:

"Of course they have bodies. And if they dig deeper they'll find what kind of shoes they were wearing"
