Black Walnut... fitting species for a coffin.

Good. That should shave funeral costs by at least 70%.

I'm going to go for cool. Now I'm pissed if I did something like that, I'd be called a copycat.

Cool. And oddly poignant.

What a waste of beautiful wood. Should have used it for furniture, or cabinetry.
Get your old ass cremated.

I live in the same house I grew up in, (no, not still in my mom's basement) and my kids climb in a tree I planted from a sapling I brought home from a grade school arbor day celebration 35+ years ago.

Well, at least I think it's a cool story.

This is already a copycat of the guy who was in the news last week. He cared for some tree all of his life. It died. He died. They were buried.

I don't think this is creepy at all.

that's the only book that makes me cry like a sissy

when i first read it in 1st grade approximately 33 years ago I thought it was dumb. definitely no where the sidewalk ends. i guess you do live and learn. or just find somewhere to sit.

Who had time to plant a tree in 1930?

Reminded me of As I Lay Dying, for some reason.

Hank Hill has influence.

I once suggested doing this. My wife told me " you better be joking".

I wonder how many funeral homes would try to claim they couldn't use it.

would make far more sense if HE planted the tree and made coffee from it

Nah you just have to customize it to fit your personal taste. It's been done many, many times before.

Could that be used as one of the few instances of true irony?

I plan on making my own coffin. But I haven't yet. I feel like its a wee bit soon to start now, but if I'm hit by a bus it'll never happen.

Here's hoping for a long slow prognosis...

JesseL: I wonder how many funeral homes would try to claim they couldn't use it.

Depends on the home. A relative of mine used to own a chain of them up into the mid 90s. They obviously would prefer you buy one from them, but they'd still most certainly perform the chapel or grounds services, cremations, or whatever, wether you have a copper and 24k gold emblazoned casket or a Folgers coffee can of your own.

That's really cool. Wish I had planted more tree's when I was young, but like most - wasn't into it.

I have a living Christmas tree in the front yard. I remember thinking it would be a cool idea 35 years ago. Dragging that stupid tree with the big root ball into the living room made me think it wasn't such a hot idea. Had to tilt it, so it would fit; the leaning tower of Christmas. Almost lost interest by New Years, but managed to plunk it down in a depression on a corner of the property, figuring it would die and then I'd get to torch it. Now? The thing is 60' tall and I'm afraid it might land on the house in a storm. Funny thing is it hasn't changed shape much - looks just like it did in the living room, but it's 60 feet tall.

Planted a pear tree over 20 years ago in the back yard in the shadow of a pine tree. It was about 6 foot when i planted it and grew to about 8 foot in 20 years - never got much bigger and never produced a pear. I cut down that pine tree a couple years ago. The pear has grown about 3'. It still doesn't look much different than when I planted it, but produces these huge pears that I'm afraid will knock the tree down. I'll probably have to prune it this year.

Everyone should plant a tree when they're young. They don't cost much when small. I know it's lame, but do it as a prank on a vacant piece of ground. Make sure if it's apple, you pick a good apple.

Black walnut would make a heck of a nice coffin.

It used to be you built your own house and your own coffin (or one for a loved one). At least in many parts of this country.

We are diminished.

Yeah, we should all build our own houses. That will ensure there is no specialization in fields that are truly important.

Like curing cancer.

Look for more stories like this over the next two decades. Three or four decades. Or five or six decades.

Do we belong here? To do what we think is right?

The only constant is change. Lamenting it is like lamenting the rising and setting of the sun.

On September 30, 1859, Abraham Lincoln included a similar story in an address before the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society in Milwaukee:

It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: "And this, too, shall pass away." How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!

And yet the human strives for permanence. A curious conundrum.

pruning is key to have trees healthy, in proportion and safe(r) around homes. if this has been ignored perhaps its time to slap cash upon the face of a better, recommended tree fellow in the area.

the were two incredible evergreens on the front yard of my childhood home. one on either side of the walkway down the middle. evergreens the height of the two story house. they looked so good at holiday.
