wudu5: I really don't get why homosexuality is such a lightning rod for these people.

In the bible it does say that two men sleeping with each other is an abomination.
However a few verses later it says that people who commit adultery should be killed.

If you are keeping score (and I personally don't) it seems that adultery is worse than homosexuality since there is a severe punishment for the sin.

So why don't all the gay bashers try attacking all those who commit adultery including almost every TV series, tons of books etc. They will have so many more targets.

/I am religious (Jewish, modern orthodox if you want to give me a label)

I noticed Levitcus says: 20 Moreover thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbor's wife,
but 22 says Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination

It doesn't say carnally. So I can't spend the night with some dude who doesn't have a couch and that's the same thing as banging my neighbor?

Bloody William: kid_icarus: "Children desire to be just like superheroes," reads the missive on the One Million Moms website. "Children mimic superhero actions and even dress up in costumes to resemble these characters as much as possible..."

That's bullshiat. I loved comics since I was in kindergarten, and collected everything from Superman to Spawn. And yet, I had a very firm grasp on the line between fantasy and reality. And there were plenty of characters that I liked as characters but was totally aware of the fact that they were jaded and nothing like the person I wanted to be.

Have you noticed that the people crying about how people who embrace fantasy can't tell the difference between it and reality are the ones who can't tell the difference between a millennia-old mythology and reality? They assume comic book fans will take comic books as seriously as the Bible because they take the Bible seriously.

It's a bit deeper than that. They assume kids, heck, everyone is a tabula rasa. By being exposed to certain things, the brain is irrevocably altered to accept that thing as good. It's a message you'll find them hammering into kids at these evangelical "camps" and such. They assume everyone is as fragile and easily swayed as themselves, so everyone must avoid, hide from and destroy anything that conflicts with their message until it's the only one left. (see Chick Publications)

A few verses after that says you should stone magicians whenever you come across them. I'm not taking these fundies seriously until Copperfield and Blaine are farking buried. Quick picking and choosing which verses are important and kill Criss Angel already. And then we can get to work on sending the menstruating women out of the village.

ObscureNameHere: Not trying to over-serious the thread here, but is the US heading for another civil war?

From north of the border here, it looks like you have a large minority of deeply social conservative voters who become out-of-touch with a more reasonable world-view with each passing year. I question the sustainability of a political system that has such entrenched and diametrically opposed elements. Functioning policy creation and execution relies on compromise -- which seems to be a word that doesn't exist among a significant wedge of the electorate.

The more battles the social conservatives lose, the more entrenched they will becoome, the more the rhetoric will be escalated (as if that were possible but I am sure some will try). How long before they get pushed to the point where the election of a president with certain modern social values makes entire states declare that the Union has lost 'the moral authority' to govern their state?

Full scale civil war a la 1861? No. I we didn't have over Martin Luther King, Jr, we won't have it over this.

The social conservative minority is VERY loud, but the truly crazy radicals are also very, very small in number.

Those kind tend to also believe in the magic bullet, fluoride as government mind control, and tinfoil hats. They do also tend to arm themselves into "militias".

As they are generally quite, quite stupid, they also get busted by the ATF.

Even if they did manage to band together somehow, that particular brand of crazy ONLY does ITS OWN kind of crazy. They will never play well together enough to become a cohesive, nation splitting threat. They just won't be able to create the charismatic leader needed to galvanize a whole state, much less many states.

The media capitalizes on our crazies because people like train wrecks. I'm seeing a big demand for change in the news agencies waaaaaaaay before I see anything like a civil war.

With that, the evangelical right's puppet strings pulled by the corporations and wealthy who have their bought and trained politicians keep the attention of the public on inane social issues/political theatre rather than the growing class divide and the fact that they have all but eliminated the power of the voter in elections, growing group of poor with less and less to lose and next to no voice in their government?

Yes, we are heading for one. If things do not turn around sharpish, I would say within the next 20 years.

You can't lie with him as you would a woman, so as long as you don't show your dick in his vagina God doesn't have a problem with it.

If meant it to mean something else, he'd have said something else, wouldn't he?

OFFS

Shouldn't they be off doing something else?
Like worrying about wearing men's clothing styles? Deuteronomy 22:5
Or mixing fabrics? Deuteronomy 22:11

No, they're busy behaving like this I Timothy 5:13
Maybe they believe in this Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT

Maybe they should take a lesson from Matthew 7:1-2.
Or from I Thessalonians 4:11
Or 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Maybe they should be like this 1 Timothy 2:12

/see, anyone can quote the Bible and use it for their own agenda
//just pulled a bunch of quotes off the internet
///Bunch of whiny hypocrites with their panties in a wad, holding the sticks up their behinds
///As long as what you do doesn't involve children, animals or bad behavior IN PUBLIC (seriously, I don't care to see men and women dry humping in public any more than I want to see two guys or two women doing so) , then go right on ahead
///Equality. It's not just for white heterosexuals anymore

And could have been done without a stunt and a big #1 on the cover.

True. I have been reading comics for almost ten years now and always struggled with DC because I never know what was going on. The reboots sucked me in. I don't know i am the exception though

Pocket Ninja: Their FAQ page is pretty funny. This was my favorite part:

Shouldn't we thank a network for airing "good" shows like ABC's Home Makeover?
In very rare instances, OneMillionMoms recognizes shows that are free from sex, violence, and profanity. However, we must take into account the "dirty" shows that are promoted during commercial breaks, along with the overall tone of the network. Unfortunately, the networks, as a whole, are consistantly offensive to family viewing.

Their registration appears to be completely open to anyone who wants to invent a name and throw out a junk email address. I briefly debated whether there might be any entertainment value to this, but I think it would get tiresome quickly.

I could see it being fun for a weekend. Grab a case of beer and see how much hell you could raise. Just don't forget to get screenshots.

Don't Troll Me Bro!: Here's something from DC that includes sex (both consensual and non-consensual), a man murdering a woman who is pregnant with his child, a little girl being murdered, chopped up, and fed to dogs, a man having his head chopped to pieces with a meat clever, a major city being nuked, protestors being murdered, alcoholism, abusive relationships, an old man being thrown out a window to his death, animal being murdered and their bodies being used to terrorize their owner, and much more. It's also an awesome read, and the movie was pretty badass as well.

Epic fail fanboy. The central pint of the comic was Ozymandias creating the alien scare for NYC, not multiple city nukings like the movie. Which I'm still confused about b/c the whole point of the Comedian getting killed in the book (and thus the genesis of the whole plot) was his accidentally seeing the 'alien' project in the works from a plane. How'd they fix that in the movie? (Honestly, I forget how they side stepped that).

They ignore everything that's not "Be anti-gay" that's (supposedly, due to faulty translation and unknown words we're not sure what exactly those verses mean) in the Bible. If they were true Christians, they'd be executing people left and right for eating seafood, wearing mixed fabric, planting more than one crop in the same plot, and allowing women to be within city limits while menstruating, to say nothing of all the straight people destroying the "sanctity of marriage" with all of the divorces, drive-thru marriages, and Britney Spears 55-hour joke marriage.

But no, it's only the homo that they fear and loathe. For some reason the idea of two men or women loving each other makes then shiat their pants as they screech like banshees into the wind.

Little known fact: Art and Literature (including comics and sci-fi) use contemporary issues as a foil for story telling. I know this is shocking, but really, it happens! Like in Action Comics, where Superman confronts Nazi like elements and bullies. Shocking I know!

I remember Rorschach saw Jacobi at the funeral and went to visit him. Then it showed Jacobi telling him about waking up with Comedian drunk in his bedroom one night. Comedian was crying and spilling info about something he had realized or seen, and the place was bugged. I don't think the movie explained who Jacobi was, or how they knew each other, or exactly what Comedian had discovered that was so important it warranted having him killed. But it's been a while, so maybe it was explained and I don't remember... and I'm not a fanboy. Sorry for not remembering exactly what transpired in a movie I saw three years ago and how it differed from a book I read several years earlier.

As Christians, we know that homosexuality is a sin (Romans 1:26-27).

Just to keep things in perspective, CHRIST never said ANYTHING about homosexuals.

And wouldn't people with super powers be 'blasphemy' to the REAL Bible Thumpers? I don't see this as any different than saying that 'Harry Potter encourages Satanism and Witchcraft'. I mean, someone who can fly, can't die, can lift a truck, etc... Seems like that isn't exactly "following God's plan", and would count as "bad"...
