abhorrent1: He's dumb because he's black.

Meh, naw I think he's dumb because he's dumb. Whatever opposition he faces because he is black is hard to determine because he's done and said some stupid shiat that had the potential to offend anyone. I think the attack on DC voters is rooted in racism by people who have no idea what the demographics of the city are, now.

/Hint: Gentrification

I didn't

Are you serious?

Well, yeah. Where would I have learned it was offensive before now?

Well.. 2 questions.. how old are you and where do you live?

29, California. Southern then Bay area.

45, Virginia. When I was going to high school the 'dumb Polack' jokes were common. Invariably, someone would get shocked and say "You know, 'Polack' is a derogatory term" and that's how you knew. Maybe it's a regional thing, but we learned it in high school.

Nope. A) no one told dumb Polack jokes. I doubt I ever even heard the word Pollack in HS.

Citrate1007: You don't have to be white to be racist.

You sound white. The University of Delaware would disagree with your statement:

From the University of Delaware Office of Residence Life Diversity Facilitation Training

"A RACIST: A racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States, regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality. By this definition, people of color cannot be racists, because as peoples within the U.S. system, they do not have the power to back up their prejudices, hostilities, or acts of discrimination. (This does not deny the existence of such prejudices, hostilities, acts of rage or discrimination.)" - Page 3

"REVERSE RACISM: A term created and used by white people to deny their white privilege. Those in denial use the term reverse racism to refer to hostile behavior by people of color toward whites, and to affirmative action policies, which allegedly give 'preferential treatment' to people of color over whites. In the U.S., there is no such thing as 'reverse racism.'" - Page 3

"A NON-RACIST: A non-term. The term was created by whites to deny responsibility for systemic racism, to maintain an aura of innocence in the face of racial oppression, and to shift responsibility for that oppression from whites to people of color (called "blaming the victim"). Responsibility for perpetuating and legitimizing a racist system rests both on those who actively maintain it, and on those who refuse to challenge it. Silence is consent." - Page 3

"Have you ever heard a well-meaning white person say, 'I'm not a member of any race except the human race?' What she usually means by this statement is that she doesn't want to perpetuate racial categories by acknowledging that she is white. This is an evasion of responsibility for her participation in a system based on supremacy for white people." - Page 8

... wow, I'm imagining someone subbing the word "black" in for "Asian" in that sentence. There would have been a shiatstorm of national proportions, protests, speeches & marches, even if he were just some podunk pensyltucky mayor instead of the elected rep of a major city.

So, does he get to keep his job because he's black, because it's still OK to single out Asians, or because no whites are involved & it's just one minority slagging another? I need to know why I should not be outraged.

At least he didn't call them orientals.

Baz the Spaz: He's just not a very smart man.

Worst thing is I only realized how poorly I'd been raised and taught when I got to Cal and took an American Cultures Sociology course. It was the raw data of socio-economic backgrounds, educational attainment, job prospects and disproportional policing that brought me around. He had taught me so many (wrong) things that I had taken at face value until Cal taught me otherwise. More distressing though was presenting him with evidence that what he believed was wrong and having that evidence dismissed out of hand because I had gotten it from my classes at Berkeley. He blamed the left-wing climate and slant on things (whatever that is) and discarded whatever I presented, never acknowledging that what I showed was essays, books and the like that was itself from somewhere else. Anyways, it sucks; and he would be pissed if you accused him of harboring racists beliefs.
