Sure, ban skimpy shorts and what not in Arab malls.

Let's ban burqas and hijaabs and all of that other shiat from ours.

So, your country fights to become a worldwide center of commerce, and yet complains about the beliefs of other cultures. You can't have it both ways. If you want to interact on the world stage, you're going to be exposed to other cultures.

Is it entirely within their rights to ban women from wearing shorts or short-sleeved tops while in the country? Yep.

Will doing so hurt their ambitions to become a massive tourist hub? Yep.

Either shape up on the human rights, let westerners dress the way they would at home, and become a tourist haven for them, or keep your dictatorship and Islamic rules on women's clothing and alcohol. You can't have it both ways.

These guys in Dubai are pretty dumb if you ask me. They are trying to turn the city into a tourist destination, and are then extremely hostile to any foreigners who go there. Such as the British man beaten to death by police in jail for cursing in public, the British couple who was arrested for kissing in public, and another guy who got years in prison cause a spec of weed was stuck in his shows from what he says must have been a joint he simply stepped on.

Yeah, sounds really fun! J/K I don't care how many cool looking buildings without a functioning sewer you make, the place sounds like a hellhole to me.

I lived in Dubai for a few months and every so often a woman's face-covering would slip off. Yikes! They were all uglier than ugly. And short. And fat. Every single one.

Arabs dig blondes. It's competition. Local women can't prevent their husbands from gawking at tourists, so they wanna control the tourists. Good luck with that strategy.

EmmaLou: It's not like people in the West are all that accommodating to Muslim women and the way they dress. I've gone out full-Muslim before and people definitely act and treat you differently, and not in a good way.

Have people openly harrassed you or have you been prevented from entering a business because of it?

I don't get why people care. "Cover your shoulders and knees in the mall" isn't the same as "all women shall wear abayas." You know what you're getting into when you go the Middle East. It shouldn't be a shock. Don't like it? Don't go. Nobody forces you to get on a plane to Abu Dhabi or Dubai.

trappedspirit: wantingout: its funny to call women dressing like sluts a 'belief'.

It's funnier to call exposing a knee slutty

Great. I'd like all the muslim women who visit Ontario, Canada to value our customs then, and go bare faced, in shorts and tank tops and have the occasional shower...with soap, and wear deodorant. That'd be a nice change.

MrSteve007: All the malls ask for is that *both genders* cover their shoulders and their knees. I thought it was an interesting and reasonable request, and not exactly an oppressive regime.

I take it you're a man.

I'm not a skimpy dresser...most of the time, but you couldn't pay me to go to the UAE. The entire set up just rubs me the wrong way (completely unsustainable from a financial and energy standpoint, no environmental/pollution/sanitation standards-mm poo openly floating in the ocean, how nice-openly built on the backs of slaves, whack ass gendered laws and segregation, etc)

Also, I'm 90% sure I'd be kidnapped and sold into sex slavery, so, there's that to contend with. ಠ_ಠ

/knows a lot of UAE ex-pats and tourist [Indian, European and American], their stories and photos are...horrifying to say the least.
//would rather spend my money in countries that at least recognize, and legitimately act upon their Human Rights legislation...at least most of the time.

so much this! we love your captialism, but not any of that other pesky freedom of choice stuff.

And stop teaching women to READ!!!

The person who started the whole campaign is a 23-year-old woman.

That sort of brain-washing takes place at an early age.

Is this law? No? OK, well, then sod off.

Cultures that subjugate women as much as some Islamic cultures do are not worthy of respect. Fark cultural relativism.

I agree with UAE about imposing cultural mores on foreigners. From now on, All foreign women must wear bikini tops and G-strings while in the US.

All of 'em.

Even Fattys.

And Grandmas.

I'm all about a level playing field...

I take it you've never visited Dubai before then?

I had the opportunity to fly there for the weekend last month. It by no means was a "backwards hellhole" - in fact, it was one of the most accommodating, clean, safe, and exciting cities I've ever visited. I can't wait to go back.

Here's some snaps I got of the "hellhole":

/did notice some pretty slutty looking Russian chicks in the Mall of Dubai.
//and their mafia looking boyfriends.
///then I went scuba diving in the mall - and then skiing in the other mall.

You sound like the sort of person for whom skiing in a mall would be a sign of an advanced culture.
