Are video games bad in excess? Yes. So is watching TV in Excess. Or, hell, becoming a shut-in and reading books in excess. Or eating in excess. Or dropping everything and following the Grateful Dead as a deadhead for two decades. But we probably don't need to ban eating or music.

If you are obsessed with anything to the point you shut out the rest of life, it's bad. Could be video games, or porn, or model trains.

If you can balance your hobbies with everything else, you'll probably be okay.

OK, DNRTFA, but what if they are right? What if modern entertainment is destroying a generation.

What I mean is, we all like to pursue pleasure. Our brains are probably hard wired to do so. 100 or more years ago this wasn't really a problem because life was harder, people had to work longer hours just to making a living and didn't always have as much leisure time. And the only entertainment that was available was somewhat more social and a some even required people to leave the house.

Now, on average, people have more leisure time and can entertain themselves from their own houses without having to go anywhere. I don't really think it's anyone's fault. I think we were always destined to get to this point. We want what brings us the most pleasure but that isn't always a good thing.

Didn't scientists do an experiment with rats where they pressed a button that gave them some sort of sexual stimulation and the rats basically stayed pressing the button for hours and hours. Foregoing anything else but pleasure. I know we aren't rats, but I guess perhaps most animals have that compulsion to seek pleasure more than anything else.

I was reading an essay about how men struggle to find their roles within a family structure. Women are taught that they can do it all, they don't need a man, and that relying on a man makes you your mother.

Men were raised with clearly defined gender roles but most of those gender roles are being tossed on their heads.

Agression is being supressed as much as possible, everywhere. The RESULT is expression through video games/porn for the passives and whoreticulture/crime for the actives. The behaviours are pointed at as causes, because the real causes aren't PC - and we all know where the virtue of accountabilty dwells not.

The consequences could be dramatic: The excessive use of video games and online porn in pursuit of the next thing is creating a generation of risk-averse guys who are unable (and unwilling) to navigate the complexities and risks inherent to real-life relationships, school and employment.

They have it perfectly backwards. There are certainly people who spend all their time on porn and video games, but it's because they lack the life skills needed to go get anything rewarding out of the outside world. People are perfectly capable of enjoying both.

Take away the video games, and slackers aren't going to suddenly get off the couch in their mom's basement, buy a suit for a job interview, and put their life in order. They're just going to be bored. This guy is obviously trying to cash in on parents who are looking for someone to blame for the way their kid turned out.
